Materials:

National Nonwovens WoolFelt:

o 1 yard Pink Grapefruit

o ½ yard (or two 12 x 18 sheets) Limelight

o 12 x 18 sheet Mellow Yellow

o 12 x 18 sheet Butternut Squash

o 12 x 18 sheet Straw

DMC Six-Strand Embroidery Floss to match WoolFelt (use three strands at a time.) Two

skeins each:

o 471 to match Limelight WoolFelt

o 783 to match Butternut Squash WoolFelt

o 3821 to match Mellow Yellow WoolFelt

o 739 to match Straw WoolFelt

o 152 to match Pink Grapefruit WoolFelt

Large-eyed chenille needle, straight pins, scissors, freezer paper, pen or pencil, glue

stick, iron.

Instructions:

Prepare WoolFelt:

o For this project, use the Pink Grapefruit WoolFelt yard as is off the bolt. Use an

iron set on “wool” to flatten out any creases.

o Soak the other WoolFelt colors in a basin of warm water. WoolFelt will bleed, so

soak colors separately. Do not use hot water as it will cause the felt to shrink too

much. Gently squeeze as much water out as you can.

o Dry the WoolFelt pieces in clothes dryer only until slightly damp. Flatten felt and

let air-dry the rest of the way. Use an iron set on “wool” to flatten felt more after it

is fully dry. You may also hang-dry the felt instead of putting in in a clothes dryer.

Trace all pattern pieces onto freezer paper and cut out in the numbers indicated.

To use the freezer paper templates, place them shiny side down on the WoolFelt. Set

the iron to the “wool” setting with no steam; the iron should be dry. Iron the freezer paper

onto the WoolFelt, pressing down for a few seconds until the freezer paper sticks.

From one corner of the Pink Grapefruit WoolFelt yard, cut a square measuring 17

inches. The final appliqued top will be trimmed to a 16 inch square before backing. The

extra size allows for trimming to square-up the final piece. Be sure there is enough felt

left to cut a 16 inch square backing piece for the project, but do not cut it out at this time.

Reserve the remaining Pink Grapefruit WoolFelt.

Cut the pattern pieces out of the other WoolFelt in the following quantities. Leave the

freezer paper templates on the pulp sections after cutting. Note that the center square

template is cut from freezer paper only:

o From the Butternut Squash WoolFelt, cut eight outer rinds and eight sets of the

pulp sections.

o From the Mellow Yellow WoolFelt, cut four outer rinds and four sets of the pulp

sections.

o From the Limelight WoolFelt, cut sixteen outer rinds and sixteen sets of the pulp

sections.

o From the Straw WoolFelt, cut the inner pith sections for each type of fruit.

Use the glue stick to adhere smaller applique pieces before stitching.

Glue the appropriate pulp sections on each size of inner pith, as shown in Figure A. After

gluing each piece in place, remove the freezer paper templates.

With matching floss, sew each pulp section down with a running stitch near the edges,

as shown in Figure B.

With the 739 floss and a blanket stitch, sew each completed pith/pulp unit to the

appropriate outer rind pieces. (See Figure C; stitches are shown in black.) There should

be eight orange wedges, four lemon wedges, and sixteen lime wedges. Set all the

wedges aside.

Fold the 17 inch Pink Grapefruit square in half and press with an iron set on “wool.”

Open, fold in the other direction, and press again. Open the square fully. Position the

center square freezer paper template on the folds as shown in Figure D. Turn the steam

off on the iron, and press down for a few seconds until the freezer paper sticks to the

WoolFelt.

Position the lemon wedges along the sides of the template. Tack in place with glue stick,

or pin securely. With matching floss, sew the wedges to the background with a blanket

stitch. Remove center square template. (See Figure E; stitching is shown in black.)

Position the orange wedges as shown in Figure F, and tack in place with glue stick, or

pin securely. With matching floss, sew the wedges to the background with a blanket

stitch. Try to keep the orange wedges square to each other. (See Figure F; stitching is

shown in black.)

Position the lime wedges as shown in Figure G, and tack in place with glue stick, or pin

securely. With matching floss, sew the wedges to the background with a blanket stitch.

Press the completed appliqued top with an iron on the “wool” setting.

Trim ½ inch from the limes on each side, squaring up the piece as you go. The piece

should be approximately 16” when trimmed.

Pin securely to the reserved Pink Grapefruit WoolFelt and cut the backing piece to

match the top. With the matching floss, blanket stitch around the entire penny rug. (See

Figure H; stitching shown in black.) Press again if needed.
