Interior Design Case Study

Atkins’ interior design team helped City College Plymouth reinvigorate its estate to enhance the learning experience.

Working with Atkins architects and engineering colleagues, we led the £4.5m refurbishment of the college’s construction faculty building and engineering facilities to provide improved accommodation and modern teaching spaces.

Our work on the construction block saw a tired, uninspiring interior transformed into an exciting environment which encourages learning and interaction.

The redevelopment included the refurbishment of the construction workshops to bring them up to the very latest standards. Simplistic ‘white boxes’ and clean finishes have freshened up the work areas, while the Trade Excellence zones give students the perfect platform to showcase their work and take part in practical learning seminars. These inspiring

spaces bring student projects to life and encourage interaction between the trades.

City College’s refurbished engineering facilities are characterised by an exciting, innovative design which is complemented by clean, focussed workshops. We chose engineering materials like rubber, concrete and timber to give the interior a unique identify to match first rate student facilities.

This project won Highly commended – ‘Best Sustainable Development’ at the LABC Awards 2012.
