SIGHTSEEING

6 places to see in Glasgow and its surroundings !

GEORGE SQUARE

You cannot miss it !! It is the main square of the city dedicated to the King George III. You will see a big building: that is the city hall! It is sometimes illuminated as you can see on picture(s). There often are entertainments! For example, you can ice-skate onto the skating rink in December!

KELVINGROVE ART GALLERYLet yourself be tempted by an amazing visit of this museum! You’ll be surprised by its originality! For free you can try on funny masks, see the most dangerous animals such as dinosaurs, look microorganisms through microscopes but also discover some mummies! This is a place not to be missed!

UNIVERSITY OF GLASGOW

If you’re not studying in this university, you really must have a look round it because it is open to the public! It will be as if you walk around Hogwarts, Harry Potter’s school! Go all over the place until you find the most beautiful viewpoint over Glasgow. If the weather is nice go for a walk in the park next to the university!

MUSEUM OF TRANSPORT

Who said that museums are deadly boring?! The museum of transport will make you feel like a kid again! Bicycles, buses, cars, planes…As you walk through this place, you’ll be immersed in the 1930’s, you’ll see the first bicycles, sit on a subway but also discover the trains for the next generation. And it’s all free!

WHISKY DISTILLERY OF AUCHENTOSHAN

If you are a whisky lover you should definitely go to this place near Glasgow!! For only £5 you can learn how whisky is made. And for you biggest pleasure you can enjoy a tasting glass at the end!

EDINBURGH

Scotland’s capital is not far from Glasgow! This only takes one hour and a half to go there by bus! The most popular city of the United Kingdom offers a lot of surprises! You’ll go back in the “old town” where you can visit the castle. But you can also find a more modern atmosphere in the “new town” where bars and restaurants are plentiful! Many festivals and events are held such as the international folk festival in May! Edinburg is a festive city and you’ll regret if you don’t go!

1 FISH N CHIPS

How talk about the UK without describing the Fish N Chips? The most famous course is just an indispensable! As the name says, it contains a large fried white fish with chips (usually with salt and vinegar). You can’t leave the city without taste it.

WHAT DO YOU HAVE TO TRY? One of the most important thing, or for sure THE vital thing is THE FOOD! How discover a country and a new culture without trying specialities? Impossible! As student or young people, you know that it’s difficult to join good food and low price. Here typical Scottish dishes for few pounds

2 FRIED FOOD

An entire part is necessary when you talk about “Fried Food”! In Scotland you can find a few stores where they sell fast food and particular fried food. You can taste a fried pizza, fried sausage, fried beef… And fried mars bar! If you are not a regular customer of this kind of food it can be interesting to try all these dishes.

3 HAGGIS

Scotland’s food can’t be list without named the famous haggis! Forget what is inside (if your stomach is delicate) and try it! However we recommend to order it in a good restaurant for the first time.

4 SEA FOOD

Don’t forget that you are in the main producer of sea food (salmon, mussels, lobster…) If you like all that kind of food, you will enjoy all these Scottish products.

5 IRN BRU

The “Scotland's other national drink" (after the whisky of course!) is an orange soda. Really famous here, you can’t compare his taste with anything else. Just try it to know! (Personal advice: for a best taste, drink it in a fresh can or with ice).

Let’s eat a burger inside the Princes Square at the NY American Grill! With a decoration mixing fancy, industrial and wood and a beautiful view on Buchanan Street, it is actually an excellent place to sit.

WETHERSPOON A few restaurants in Glasgow (and other cities like Edinburgh) where you can find cheap and good food in nice located place, often old building like bank or offices. Taste the “chili con carne Hot Dog” with a drink for a few pounds at what any time of the day.

BUCHANAN STREET

Mainly because you have all the stores reunited in one beautiful street in the heart of the city centre. Forever 21, All Saints, Lush, Urban Outfitters, Zara… A lot of different place where you can buy clothes and accessories walking the street.

PRINCES SQUARE (48 Buchanan Street)

A shopping centre with a magnificent front window where you must have a high budget if you want to buy a designer clothes. You can also take a drink or eat inside it.

As a memory, a gift or just for yourself, this is a list where you can buy what you want. Don’t forget to show your student ID for

WEST END AND THRIFT SHOP

Take the subway or the bus and go to the West End where you can find nice stores and thrift shop. You can buy a kilt for 10£ or shoes for 5£!

WHERE TO SLEEP ?

Find a place to stay can be a real headache!! If you can try to find a flat before going to Glasgow!

If you live in the city centre you have everything within reach!

This is a young and dynamic neighbourhood and the atmosphere is cosy! Not far from the city centre there is a lot of things to explore! However avoid the south of Glasgow across the river, because you’ll be away from everything!

GLASGOW BY NIGHT

You probably know that Glasgow is more and more famous for its nights. Indeed, there are many nice places to go to party and to drink. Maybe too much for someone who has never been in the city? You will find below nice and originals pubs and clubs.

Nice pubs where you can have a drink !

The Willow Tearoom: Is a tea room designed by the famous Glaswegian architect: Mackintosh. The address is 217 Sauchiehall Street.

The Corinthian: is an old bank refashioned as a very nice pub. It is located on 191 Ingram Street:

- The Arches: Very nice pub under the central station. You find yourself under a stone vaulted roof very well enlightened. It is at 253 Argyle Street!

- The Gallery: This pub embodies perfectly the “old Scotland” style. The address is 203 Buchanan Street!

Oran Mor – Café: At the top of Byres road in the west end, an old church was reorganized as a pub. The atmosphere is warm and typically Scottish. You will find there 250 whiskies malts and a roof designed by Alasdair Gray.

A very nice way to reconcile discover of the city with drinks is the “sub crawl game”. The subway of Glasgow is special; there is only one circular line which goes all around the city. The aim of the Sub crawl is to stop at every station and take a beer in the closest pub. There are 15 stations so you have to stop 15 times! It’s a very nice game to do with friends, it permit you to discover every headquarter of the city and also to meet a lot of people! Don’t forget to buy a daily ticket!

Clubs you should try For every young people, partying is very important in holidays but even during the studies. Glasgow nightlife is also very well known for the large range of its clubs. In less than 20 minutes by feet, you can reach every club and every musical genre.

Sub Club: Very famous club for its underground genre, the Sub Club is very close from the central station. Since 1987, this club this club plays kind of house techno music to customers who are here more to enjoy the music than drinking. This club appears 45th in the world best clubs ranking, edited by Dj mag.

O2 ABC: This club is in reality a concert hall. When the concerts are finished, it begins to be a giant club. The music is always different and the size of this club permits you to not feel claustrophobic! Most of the time, the entrance is 5 pounds. Every Friday nights, a special party called “Propaganda”. Its rock Indo style and you can enter for free if you register in advance on their website!25

THE GARAGE: it’s a very big nightclub with 3 big rooms and cheap prices. This is the perfect club for students! The music is commercial and actual, and the advantage of the 3 rooms is that you can choose your music style! This club is open 365 days a year !

THE ARCHES: this is a pub during the day and a club during the night! This Victorians arches can host 3.000 clubbers, which is directly under the central station in the city center. The students “Octopussy” parties every Wednesday is a success. Carl Cox, Boize noise and lots of Dj have played recently in this club.

The flat 0/1 Very nice concept! The club is composed like a flat: You can dance in the kitchen, sit on a living room and even in double beds or a bath! The entry is free every night!

USEFUL TIP:SCOTISH

SLANGIf you’re not Scottish you probably won’t understand everything and it can be confusing. Indeed, they have a strong accent and they use special words which only exist in Scotland. Here are some advices to help you with the Scottish English!

Scottish people roll one’s r’s; that is one of the reasons why it can be hard to understand.

You will probably hear someone ask you “Alright?” which is very common for the greetings! However you will notice that in Scottish English the letter g often disappears. As a result you will hear “goin” instead of “going”. In particular “going to” becomes “gaunnae”. In the same idea you can guess that “umnae” means I am not.

“Cheers” is widely used to thank. Moreover you will realise that to say “yes” they use another word: “aye” and “No” becomes “naw”. But they also have some other different words such as “wee” which means small, “bairn” which means baby or “blether” which means talkative.

You may hear “Keep the heid!” This phrase can also be used to say “stay calm”.

The 30th of November is dedicated to Saint Andrew, the patron saint of Scotland. Since2007 Saint Andrew’s day is a public holiday and many events take place. For example you will have the opportunity to eat the best food of Scotland, listen to the traditional music and admire the traditional dance (ceilidh). Let yourself be surprised!!
