It is with sincere thanks to the 911 Department and 2nd Precinct Police

Department for their help and professionalism concerning an incident that

happened at my residence in the early morning of February 16th.

I live at 2325 W Great Neck Road (Unit 101). I was suddenly awakened at 2:11am

by someone banging on my door and ringing my doorbell. As all sorts of things

were going through my mind, I ran to the door and looked out the peephole. I

asked his name and he told me it was Nick. I let him know I did not know a Nick

and to please leave. He kept yelling for me to open the door and said he wasn't

leaving until I did. The banging continued.

Truly frightened by now, I ran to the kitchen to get a knife and my cell. I called

911. The gentleman who answered was so very helpful. He obtained all the

necessary information and informed me the police had been dispatched and to

get into a protected area of my home. He stayed with me until he knew the police

had arrived. He caringly told me he was going to hang up and that I would be

called back to let me know when it was safe to come to the door. I don't know

the name of that gentleman, but I hope he knows how important his job is. Please

let him know how much the ones on the other side of the phone feel in that these

truly special people are our life-line at the time of raw fright.

I was then called by the police stating it was ok for me to come to the door. There

were a total of 3 Officers (2 male and 1 female). Still shaking, I opened the door

not even realizing I still had the kitchen knife in my hand .. Both Officers asked that

I put down the knife which I did. The female officer said this man had evidently

been drinking but he was convinced I knew him. I stuck my head out to look at

this young man. The other Officer had taken this man away from my door and

stood as a brace of protection for me. I did not know this Nick at all. The Officer's

did state they would take him to the precinct. I was so very thankful for their help.

I do not know the names of those 3 Officers, but I hope they know how very

important their job is as well. I truly felt so safe and relieved when I saw them at

my door.

It takes truly special people to put their lives on the line every day and this goes

for Police Officers and Fire Fighters alike. They never know what situation they

may find themselves in but they do it anyway. I think a lot of us can and do take

them for granted at times. It has to be truly disheartening for the police men and
