THALIA KAYAK LAUNCH NOW OPEN FOR PUBLIC USE

The new Thalia Kayak Launch Facility is now open for public use. The ADA-compliant launch is located off Thalia Road, adjacent to Thalia Elementary School, and includes a floating dock launch that is accessed by an aluminum gangway, and a small parking lot. It provides water access to Thalia Creek and the Western Branch of the Lynnhaven River. The facility is open for use from sunrise to sunset; use after dark is prohibited. VIRGINIA BEACH FIREFIGHTERS HELP HURRICANE VICTIMS SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO Virginia Task Force 2 (VA-TF2) FEMA Urban Search and Rescue Team deployed to San Juan, Puerto Rico Tuesday ahead of Hurricane Irma. The 45 members of this deployment are part of a regional FEMA team, one of 28 Urban Search and Rescue Teams located across the nation. The Virginia Beach Fire Department is the sponsoring agency for VA-TF2 and in addition to the VBFD, firefighters from seven other regional fire departments as well as a doctor and canine handlers make up the team. Combined, the task force members specialize in heavy/technical rescue, HAZMAT, water rescue, structural collapse, and all aspects of search and rescue operations. The VA-TF2 team that deployed to San Juan is now being relocated to St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands where they have already begun targeted searches. KATY, TEXAS At about the same time the team was setting up in San Juan, another contingent of VA-TF2 was returning from a deployment in Katy, Texas, where Hurricane Harvey dumped more than 51 inches of rain. VA-TF2 conducted about 500 rescues of residents trapped in their homes by the flood waters. The 14-member team of firefighters from across Hampton Roads used boats to go door-to-door and bring trapped residents (many of whom were without food, water and electricity) to the safety of higher ground. NACOGDOCHES, TEXAS Several members of the VBFD also deployed to Nacogdoches, Texas with the Hampton Roads Incident Management Team (HRIMT) to assist that community with managing shelters for evacuees from Houston that were affected by Hurricane Harvey. The HRIMT is based with the Chesapeake Fire Department and consists of members from 11 Hampton Roads localities .

VBFD MARINE TEAM HELPS WITH CITY AND COMMUNITY WATER EVENTS

This summer, the Virginia Beach Fire Department Marine Team assisted with several community events, including the Wave Warrior Surf Camp, and Parks and Recreation’s Therapeutic Recreation Camp. The Wave Warrior Surf Campfor disabled veterans also hosted a camp for children with disabilities, specifically autism. Crews from Engines 12 and 17 were in the water helping campers as they enjoyed activities and were on hand in case of emergencies. In addition to those two camps, Marine Team members lent a hand to Parks and Rec’s Therapeutic Recreation Camp, which included open-water swim days and a surf camp at Croatan. The crews who attended these events spoke about how meaningful it was to be there and have even signed up to volunteer next year on their days off.

COURSE CHANGE FOR 2018 SHAMROCK MARATHON PROVIDES BENEFIT TO EVERYONE

J &A Racing requested and received an approved City of Virginia Beach Special Events Permit and will be unveiling a new race course for the 2018 Shamrock Marathon. Due to the race distance, individual runners will be more spread out than in previous years and will have greater access in and out of the Croatan neighborhood. Overall, the course change will allow a: • Reduction in public/safety police manpower and subsequent

costs. • Reduction in overall road closure by approximately one hour. • Reduction of impact on Atlantic Avenue and the North End.

The Shamrock Half Marathon and Full Marathon will take place on Sunday, March 18, 2018.

HRT IMPLEMENTING NEXT PHASE OF TRANSIT FARE INCREASE

Hampton Roads Transit will implement the next phase of fare increase for all modes of transit effective Sunday, Oct. 1. From the discussion and comments received from the public hearings in February and March 2014, HRT decided to phase the rollout of the new fare increase in two parts

instead of all at once. The first included a $.25 increase in the one-way fare, rather than the proposed $.50. Other fares were adjusted to half of the initially proposed increase and no increase at the time for Paratransit. The Oct. 1 fare increase completes the adopted fare increase and fares will be evaluated every other year after that. For more information, visit www.gohrt.com.
