Fromthetop,visitorscanenjoyspectacularpan-oramic views of the city and lake, with the snow-capped Alps in the distance. The Planet Trail pro-vides fascinating insights into our solar system. Churches
H5
zuerich.com/fraumuenster
FraumünsterThis church with a former convent was founded in 853 by King Louis the German. After the Reforma-tion, ownership passed to the City of Zurich. The church’s most important decorative features are its stained glass windows. The north windows are the work of Augusto Giacometti, while the five-part cycle in the choir and the rosette in the southern transept are by Marc Chagall. There is also a series of frescoes by Paul Bodmer in the cloister.
Churches
H5
zuerich.com/grossmuenster
GrossmünsterAccording to legend, Charlemagne discovered the graves of Zurich’s patron saints, Felix and Regula, and had a church built on the same spot. In the 16th century, Huldrych Zwingli initiated the Reformation in German-speaking Switzerland from the Grossmünster. 187 steps lead up to the viewing platform at the top of the Karlsturm tower. Other highlights: agate windows by Sigmar Polke, crypt dating from 1107 AD (oldest room in the city).
Churches
H5
zuerich.com/st-peter
St. Peter’s ChurchSt. Peter’s Church is the oldest parish church in Zurich; the original foundation walls dating from the 9th century can still be seen under the chancel. The city’s first mayor, Rudolf Brun, acquired St. Peter’s in 1345, along with all the associated privileges and obligations. His grave and monu-ment can be found by the outer tower wall. The clock face on the tower measures 28.5ft (8.7m) in diameter, making it the largest in Europe.
Parks & Gardens
H5
zuerich.com/lindenhof
LindenhofFrom Lindenhof, situated in the very heart of the city’shistoricalquarter, youcanenjoyamagnificent view of the Limmat and the Old Town on the right bank of the river. From the 4th century right through to the Early Middle Ages, a Roman fort stood here. Nowadays, the square is a haven of peace and relaxation, a venue for events of all kinds, and a meeting place for keen chess players.
Squares & Streets
H6
zuerich.com/bahnhofstrasse
BahnhofstrasseThe world-famous shopping mile was built on the site where the city’s fortified moat stood 150 years ago. Almost a mile (1.4km) in length, it links the Main Train Station with Lake Zurich. Here depart-mentstores,boutiquesandjewelryshopscanbefound lined up in a row. The further you go towards the lake, the more exclusive the stores become. The heart of the Bahnhofstrasse is the world- famous financial center, Paradeplatz.
Squares & Streets
H6
zuerich.com/buerkliplatz
BürkliplatzIn the summer, inline skaters, bathers, market vendors and street artists gather around the lower lake basin. Fairs and festivals are also held here. In winter, the lakeside promenade, offering superb views of the snow-covered Alps, is a popular place for a stroll. Roasted chestnuts or drinks of hot chocolate or mulled wine keep stomachs and hands warm. Numerous boats offering round trips on the lake are moored here all year round.
Squares & Streets
H4
zuerich.com/niederdorf
NiederdorfThe Niederdorf is part of Zurich’s Old Town and stretches along the right bank of the Limmat. Similarly to Limmatquai, which runs parallel, it is a pedestrian zone. During the day, the many little stores and boutiques tucked away in the narrow side streets invite passers-by to browse. In the evening, the Niederdorf is transformed into a nightlife district, catering for a varied public with its many bars, restaurants and street artists.
Squares & Streets
E2

Zurich-WestThe district where once ships were built and engines bolted together is now a focal point of art, design, gastronomy, nightlife, shopping and architecture. Factories have moved away, leaving behind them vast expanses of space, which creative minds have put to good use. Under the arches of the old Letten railway viaduct, design boutiques and an indoor market have taken up residence, while clubs rub shoulders with trendy bars and restaurants.

Zurich ZooAt Zurich Zoo, visitors can experience snow leopards in their rocky Himalayan landscape, watch elephants bathing or observe Andean bears climbing in their mountain cloud forest.
