CITY OF DEVONPORTTASMANIA
The towns of Formby and Torquay, on either side of the Mersey River, merged in 1890 to become Devonport, which is now one of the state's six cities. Itis a key sea and air gateway to Tasmania, with the terminal for a Bass Strait passenger-vehicular service, the Spirit of Tasmania 1 and 2, forming a focalpoint on the waterfront.Devonport's many attractions reflect its importance as a city, port and a major service centre for nearby rural districts. Among the most popular shortjourneys from Devonport is a trip to the Cradle Mountain - Lake St. Clair National Park, around 60km. to the south. This park is part of a vast World HeritageArea encompassing most of western Tasmania. To the west, the pretty towns and cities dot the coast offering a variety of attractions and some spectacularcoastal scenery. The safe, sandy beaches, rugged coastal national parks, and quaint inland villages are unique in Australia and a delight to explore. Tothe east, Launceston is only an hour away and the highway passes the interesting towns of Latrobe, noted for its Axeman’s Hall of Fame where you cansee the history of this exhausting and entertaining sport, dominated by local axemen and women. At Deloraine you can visit the Information centre andinterpretive display on the Western Tiers, while Westbury has several historic homes, a steam museum, a maze and much more. Short detours wil takeyou to Hadspen and historic Entally House, while Longford and Perth offer their own charms.Newer arrivals to the Devonport area are mouthwatering. Just east along the Bass Highway near Latrobe is the Anvers Chocolate Factory, open for viewingand tasting daily. A little further afield is the Ashgrove Cheesery. There are also several wineries to visit and Devonport has a large number and variety ofrestaurants, take-away food places, hotels and bistros and specialists shops selling Tasmanian produce. A browse through the businesses included inthese pages will give you an insight into what is available. There is also a broad range of accommodation from backpacker hostels to quality motel andhotel accommodation. There are several caravan parks which also cater for campers.
DEVONPORT - THINGS TO SEE AND DO.
