CITY OF CALABASAS FALL 2020LETTER FROM THE MAYOR

FALL 2019 CITY OF CALABASAS | 1

Dear Calabasas Community,

This has been the most challenging time in the history of Calabasas. As a community we are continuing to deal with the challenges of COVID-19 and the impacts that it is having on Calabasas. As a City we pride ourselves on our sense of community. This pandemic has challenged us to redefine what that means for all of us. How can we continue to build a sense of community and provide programming and opportunities for our residents? This recreation brochure will not be like any you have seen before. A majority of our classes and programs will remain online. During this time, we have remained committed to keeping our programming vital and residents engaged.

I thank you for your continued interest in our programming and your willingness to engage in new ways. We all look forward to the days ahead when we can gather together and offer the programs and events that are so a part of the fabric of Calabasas.

Please continue to stay healthy and safe. Together we are #CalabasasStrong.

Alicia WeintraubMayor

HONORING OUR VETERANSVeterans Day, observed annually on November 11, is a tribute to military veterans who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces.

This holiday was originally called Armistice Day and was first issued by President Woodrow Wilson on November 11, 1919, a year following the end of World War I. It was established as a way to honor the fallen soldiers of The Great War. Congress adopted a resolution seven years later to make it an annual legal holiday.

In 1945, World War II veteran Raymond Weeks led a delegation to expand Armistice Day to celebrate all veterans, not just those who died serving in World War I. In 1954, Congress replaced "Armistice Day" with "Veterans Day."

On November 11, 2020, take a moment to express your appreciation to our military veterans. We honor them not only on that day, but every day. Thank you for your service and bravery.

CITIZEN SERVICE REQUESTS The Connect with Calabasas mobile app and web portal enables service requests (potholes, noise complaints, dangerous conditions, graffiti, etc) to be submitted directly to the City, where they will be instantly routed to the correct administrator in the appropriate department. This means service requests will be responded to quickly and efficiently, and residents will be notified the instant problems are resolved. Residents can also view nearby service requests in their area and “vote up” requests that they support to get the issue resolved even more quickly. SEVEN GIFTS FROM LA KITCHENS TO THE WORLDCalifornia Cuisine is often thought of as a creative wave that began in San Francisco in the 1970’s, but its roots are much older and more local. The waves of immigrants to Los Angeles each brought their own tastes in food, and recreated their traditions in their new home. In many cases this wasn’t easy because vital ingredients weren’t available, so they had to improvise with things they could grow in California. In time a new cuisine developed that included elements of cuisines from Europe, Central and South America, and Asia. This talk traces the waves of migration to Los Angeles and looks at seven once-exotic items that have become part of the culinary mainstream.

IMBIBING LA: BOOZING IT UP IN THE CITY OF ANGELS From the wine-loving Spaniards who first settled Los Angeles to the cocktail quaffers of the jet age, Los Angeles tastes have shifted when it comes to enjoying alcoholic beverages. The city has been a center of winemaking and brewing, a region where intoxicating potions were celebrated by movie stars and hunted down by prohibitionists, and a place where finely balanced drinks and abysmal concoctions were crafted by bartenders and celebrities. This talk covers the period from 1778 to the 2000s that begins with pious monks, includes the law-dodging bootleggers and flappers who were anything but reverent, and moves on to the present day.

SOURCES OF INSPIRATION: LIVING LOVE THAT LASTSThis workshop, Sources of Inspiration, is a discussion of a documentary a group of mental health professionals who counsel couples filmed of interviews with couples who have satisfactory long-term loving relationships. The workshop is an opportunity to hear from several couples and reflect on the ways love grows. Our hope is participants will discover themes beyond the scope of what is familiar, and they will feel reinforced in what is familiar to them about how love grows. By participating in this workshop, you will be immersed in the extra-ordinary ways that love grows within the ordinary and imperfect lives of couples. After a brief introduction to the film and how it came to be, the group will view our one-hour documentary. We will view the film in its entirety, and the presenters will give the participants questions to consider while watching the film. Participants will witness the couples’ imperfections, their diversity, their challenges, their changes and their love over their years together. We will discuss the film as a group.

MUSICTHE BRITISH INVASION: A MUSICAL REVOLUTIONIn the mid-1960s, the overwhelming success of the Beatles turned musical and popular culture upside down as musical groups and acts from Great Britain monopolized the pop charts in the America as well as in the UK. The initial flurry of performers lasted roughly from 1964 to 1967, but during this brief span of years groups like the Rolling Stones, the Yardbirds, the Kinks, and the Moody Blues got their start. Some had already been going strong in the UK before the Beatles arrived in America but after their fateful Ed Sullivan Show appearance on February 9, 1964, the floodgates were opened. In this course, we will spend an hour examining each of the movement’s major acts, most of whom are in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. (Note: The Beatles, which was the subject of a recent course, will not be covered in this class) WEEK 1: The Skiffle Craze / The Bee Gees; WEEK 2: Gerry & the Pacemakers / The Dave Clark Five; WEEK 3: The Rolling Stones / The Hollies; WEEK 4: The Zombies / The Yardbirds; WEEK 5: Donovan / Herman’s Hermits; WEEK 6: The Animals / The Kinks; WEEK 7: The Moody Blues / The Who; WEEK 8: The Also-Rans and the One-Hit Wonders. READING TO YOUR ACTIVE GRANDCHILD WORKSHOP This class will explore the art of storytelling. As a former Director of a Preschool, and founder of The Butterfly Book Club, I have been actively involved for many years in the joy of sharing books with children. Reading develops focus and concentration skills. It improves the ability to make cognitive connections and, perhaps most importantly, develops TOM (Theory of Mind). TOM is the ability to see and feel the world from different perspectives, to understand that others have the same thoughts and feelings that you do. During this class, you will learn the techniques for interactive reading. A way of reading stories that not only captures the interest of an active child, but also fosters the child’s listening, thinking, and comprehension skills for later learning. Interactive reading can be practiced in person, or over FaceTime or Zoom. We will discuss using both venues, how they differ, and how they are the same. No materials are required for this class. CREATIVE ARTS ACRYLIC PAINTING Acrylics are actually a great medium for beginners to learn, because it is such a forgiving medium. Acrylics are water-based, which means that unlike oil paints, they can be thinned with water and cleaned with water. Acrylic paints can mimic the quality of oil paints and when thinned with lots of water, acrylics can also mimic the qualities of watercolor. Acrylic paint dries quickly and is very versatile. The most popular surfaces for painting with acrylics are canvas, wood, or paper. This art class will instruct in the use and techniques of painting with acrylic paint. Painting subject will be the choice of the student from photos, pictures, or your imagination to be done on canvas. (minimum 9” x 12”) Keep painting and don’t forget the most important thing in painting and art, the fun is in the journey, not the destination. *Students will receive a list of needed supplies prior to the start of class. CITY OF CALABASASAddendum Release and Waiver of LiabilityRelating to Coronavirus/COVID-19

The novel coronavirus, COVID-19, has been declared a worldwide pandemic by the World Health Organization. COVID-19 is extremely contagious and is believed to spread mainly from person-to-person contact. As a result, federal, state, and local governments and federal and state health agencies recommend social distancing.

All participants in recreational activities must comply with safety measures outlined in the prevention plan and social distancing must be followed; six feet between all members of the activity when outdoors and twelve feet indoors. A public health officer may inspect a program at any time and act if measures to control infection is insufficient.

Participants taking part in online activities offered by the City agree to abide by the City’s safety standards and any other requirements as deemed necessary by City staff. Independent contractors offering online instruction also consent to the City’s use of names, photos, likenesses and written feedback in any and all publications, advertising and publicity, and grants permission to be filmed or taped by the City or the news media.

By signing this agreement, I represent that I will adhere to the aforementioned preventive measures according to Los Angeles County and the City of Calabasas. Further, on my behalf, by signing this agreement, I acknowledge the contagious nature of COVID-19 and voluntarily assume the risk that each instructor may be exposed to or infected by COVID-19 by participating in recreation activities/training and that such exposure or infection may result in personal injury, illness, permanent disability, and death. Further, on my behalf, I hereby release, waive, covenant not to sue, discharge, and hold harmless the City of Calabasas, its employees, agents, and representatives, of and from any such liabilities, claims, actions, damages, costs or expenses of any kind arising out of or relating thereto. I understand and agree that this release includes any claims based on the actions, omissions, or negligence of the City, its employees, agents, and representatives.

Section 1542 of the Civil Code of the State of California provides as follows:

“A General Release does not extend to claims which the creditor does not know or suspect to exist in his favor at the time of executing the Release which if known by him must have materially affected his settlement with the debtor.”

I hereby represent that I have read and understand Civil Code Section 1542 and that I hereby waive all present and future rights and benefits under Section 1542 to the extent it would permit claims arising from my participation in recreation activities/training, including without limitation, any based on facts found to be different from the facts believed to be true at the time this Release and Waiver of Liability was executed.

To the extent that I, individually, or my heirs, guardians, legal representatives or assigns bring a claim of any kind whatsoever against the City of Calabasas, I agree that this Release and Waiver of Liability is to be construed under the laws of the State of California, and that if any portion hereof is held invalid, the balance hereof shall, not withstanding, continue in full legal force an d effect. Any claims or causes of action arising out of or related to participation in recreation activities/training, of which I am voluntarily participating, shall be tried exclusively in the Superior Court of Los Angeles County.
