TITLE: GOLF COURSE SUPERINTENDENT
DEPARTMENT: Parks and Recreation
REPORTS TO: Parks and Recreation Director and/or as Designated
SUPERVISES: Full and part-time golf course maintenance staff

POSITION PURPOSE/SUMMARY
This position is responsible for all golf course planning, operations and maintenance.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES
Oversees the care and maintenance of all golf course turf, plants, shrubs, and trees.
Oversees the irrigation program and irrigation system.
Directs and assists staff on the planting of new vegetation, the replacement, spraying,
pruning and trimming of trees and shrubs, the preparation of soil plant beds for aesthetically
pleasing arrangements and tending to high stress areas.
Recruits, supervises and manages maintenance staff. Conducts employee performance
evaluations and exercises disciplinary action in accordance to City policies.
Provides technical, operational and safety training for employees to ensure that staff is
working within state and federal guidelines for safe working conditions.
Supervises and participates in the application of and recording of chemical applications
(fertilizers and pesticides) on the grounds in compliance with all regulations.
Supervises and controls all maintenance expenses associated with golf course operations,
including golf course maintenance equipment, payroll, supplies, chemicals and fertilizers.
Develops annual operating budget and plans for maintenance and capital improvement
projects.
Keeps daily records of course activities including mowing, fertilizing, cutting cups,
spraying, etc. and assists in preparing reports reflecting total hours of personnel and
equipment used.
Maintains records and completes required reporting. Orders parts, supplies and equipment
as needed.
Schedules maintenance practices around member play and outings to maximize efficiency
and minimize disruption to players.

Works closely with the Golf Pro and other City Parks Staff in providing a quality golf
course.
Assists with controlling winter related activities on the golf course and snow removal.
Assists Parks and Recreation Director with capital project requests, golf course
management plans and master plans.
BASIC FUNCTIONS
Responsible for all phases of golf maintenance and agronomic operations, irrigation, cost
control, and personnel.
Works closely with, advises, and coordinates with the Golf Professional and the Parks and
Recreation Director on any issues related to golf course maintenance.
Directs and participates in the construction and maintenance of the grounds on the golf
course and near the clubhouse.
Designs landscape plans for facility grounds and implements the plan.
Works closely with the Director of Parks and Recreation and/or Designee to operate the
golf course in a fiscally responsible and professional manner.
Must be able to work independently and be a self-starting problem solver.
Provide reports to the Parks and Recreation Director.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is generally performed in an office and field environment. Working conditions will include
use of a computer and multi-line telephone for extended periods. Some lifting of supplies and small
equipment is required.
May be required to work nights, evenings, weekends, and/or holidays. Required to stand, walk,
bend, or operate machinery or a vehicle for extended periods of time. Frequently required to lift
objects weighing up to 25 pounds. May be required to handle or work with toxic substances with
some exposure to chemicals, machinery and equipment.
KNOWLEDGE. ABILITIES, SKILLS FOR SUCCESS
Knowledge of management and maintenance of greens, fairways and roughs.
Knowledge and experience of golf course renovations including the rebuilding of greens,
tees, sand trap, fairways, rough, and pond banks.
Knowledge and use of equipment and tools used in golf course, construction and
maintenance work.
Knowledge and experience with computerized irrigation systems.

Knowledge of safe use, mixing and application of chemicals and commercial products.
Ability to anticipate personnel, equipment, and material requirements related to course
maintenance and repair assignments.
Knowledge of the game of golf, golf rules and methods of play.
Skill in recruiting, supervising, training, monitoring, evaluating and motivating personnel.
Ability to work and lead in a team setting.
Interpersonal communication skills to resolve conflict and to work with supervisor, other
City Staff, customers and the public.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED
3-5 years of experience as a Golf Course Superintendent or First Assistant.
Minimum (2) two-year degree or certificate from an accredited educational institution in
Turf Management (or related field, such as agronomy, horticulture, plant science, soil
science).
Advance computer skills required for financial reporting and control of operations,
including use Microsoft Office Suite.
Washington State Pesticide Application License or the ability to obtain one within one year
of Employment.
Prefer certification by the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America.
Valid Washington State Driver's License or the ability to obtain on within six months of
employment.
Prefer a person who regularly plays golf so that the nuances of the course are conveyed to
maintenance practices and overall playability of the course to increase customer
satisfaction.
