DURBAN FACTS, STATISTICS AND INFORMATION
7 City of Durban Vision By 2020, the eThekwini Municipality will enjoy the reputation of being Africa's most livable city, where all citizens live in harmony. This vision will be achieved by growing our economy and meeting people's needs so that all citizens enjoy a high quality of life with equal opportunities, in a city that makes us are truly proud. Location: Durban lies on the east coast of Southern Africa, in the province of KwaZulu-Natal. It lies 600 km / 373 miles south of the Tropic of Capricorn; 600km / 373 miles southeast of Johannesburg and 77 km/ 48 miles south-east of Pietermaritzburg.
eThekwini Municipality – An Overview The eThekwini Municipal Area / EMMA (eThekwini Metropolitan Council) was created from the six former Sub-Councils of the North, North-Central, Outer West, Inner West, South Central, and South. Umkomaas Transitional Local Council and 11 traditional authority areas were included adding 900 km ² / 347miles² of land. eThekwini Municipality is well managed with an established organizational structure and administrative system in place. This area stretches from Umkomaas in the south, including some tribal area in Umbumbulu, to Tongaat in the north, moving inland to some tribal area in Ndwedwe, and ends at Cato Ridge in the west. The EMA covers an area of 2297km ²/ 887miles ² with a population of approximately 3 million people. The newly demarcated boundary increased the Durban Metropolitan area by 68% although increasing the population by only 9%. The majority of the newly incorporated areas are very rural in character with 50% of the area being used for subsistence farming and only 2% under urban settlement. These areas have little or very poorly maintained infrastructure. Being incorporated into the EMA brings hope of access to better services and opportunities to these residents. The provision of basic services to these areas is the challenge that council now faces. In the new dispensation, the eThekwini council has 200 councilors. One hundred of them are elected ward councilors and the other hundred candidates were elected to represent political parties based on proportional representation. Of the two hundred councilors, there are 54 females and146 males. The city is located on a huge natural lagoon that forms its harbour with a range of hills inland that are the remains of fossilized sand dunes. Durban, South Africa’s premier east-coast city has been the country’s favourite holiday destination for decades and offers an unrivalled tourist experience. The province of KwaZulu-Natal maintains a dominant position in the domestic tourism market, generating R3-billion to the province with over five million people visiting Durban annually. The city also captures over 400 000 international visitors per year.
The Durban area is also a thriving business centre and is South Africa’s second most important economic region. The Port of Durban is one of the most significant seaports in the world. Handling over a million containers annually the Port and the Durban region have become the
8 trading gateway to the growing Southern African market as well as the channel for South Africa’s entry into world markets. The port of Durban is South Africa’s most important general cargo and container port. Durban handles 50% of South Africa's break bulk cargo and 64.8% of containerized traffic; it processes more containers than all other South African ports combined, and earns 65% of total national port revenue. Currently, around 27 million tons of cargo is handled annually in Durban. This is projected to reach over 51 million tons by 2015 eThekwini is the main economic driver in KwaZulu-Natal, contributing over half of the province’s output, employment and income. In national terms, eThekwini is the second most important economic complex after Gauteng, accounting for 15% of the national output, 14% of household income, and 11% of national employment. eThekwini’s economic strength is due in part to its role as South Africa’s international trade hub as well as being a leading regional industrial, commercial, and financial centre in its own right. Supported by excellent road, rail and communications infrastructure, the Durban region has become the location of choice for manufacturing firms exporting a range of products.

South Africa has an unusual electric plug, so a plug adapter will be needed; and any device that cannot adjust or be switched to the higher voltage will require a transformer.
Health Risks Malaria is mainly confined to the eastern half of South Africa, especially on the loved (coastal plain). Bilharzia is also found mainly in the east but outbreaks do occur in other places, so you should always check with knowledgeable local people before drinking water or swimming in it.

Climate Durban is famed for its mild, sunny winter climate and year-round "fun-in-the-water" weather. Durban is blessed with an abundance of vegetation and a subtropical climate with sunshine for at least 320 days a year. Temperatures range from 16°C - 25°C / 61 °- 77°F during the winter months of June, July, and August. Summer temperatures can reach above 32°C / 90 °F with relatively high humidity during the hot season. Durban owes these characteristics to the equatorial current of the Indian Ocean, which is the source of a vast stream of warm, blue water flowing south-west through the Mozambique Channel. Seawater temperatures along the coast compare more favourably with those of the Mediterranean in summer (75°F / 24°C), but in winter, they seldom fall below 66°F / 19°C – which is 10° warmer than the Mediterranean in the same season.

SAFETY Durban’s Central Business District in partnership with the Metro Police, South African Police (SAP), and Tourist Protection Unit have made a considerable effort to safeguard tourists against crime, from surveillance cameras and improved lighting on the beachfront to security guards
12 watching over most large shopping centres and many businesses. Nonetheless, visitors should take precautions they would in any major city: avoid carrying large sums of cash, having cameras or video cameras loose, or leaving belongings unattended. Take special precautions at lonely lookout points, on the beachfront or in market areas where pick pocketing may occur, and take advice from locals on where to go after dark.
A GUIDE TO SAFETY TIPS FOR TOURISTS
On The Street • Like any large city where a large percentage of the population is poor, Durban is troubled by
street crime. Do not publicize your valuables, e.g. jewellery, cameras etc. • Use credit cards, or if not possible please carry only small amounts of cash • At night avoid isolated dark places • If you need any information a policeman or officer will gladly assist you • If you want a taxi, your hotel or the nearest tourist information office can recommend a
reliable service • Be Aware Of Your Surroundings • Get advice from your hotel prior to embarking on foot
In The Car • Like anywhere else in the world, your safety is strongly dependant on you • Always know where you are going • Fasten your seatbelts, lock your doors and only open your windows about 5cm • Never pick up strangers • Do not use your cell phone while driving unless you have a hands free kit • Never display your valuables in the car e.g. handbags, clothes, cell phones etc – rather lock
them in the boot. • Be aware of your surroundings when you stop at a robot or stop street
On The Beach • Swim only at beaches manned by lifeguards • Swim between the beacons • Obey the instructions of lifeguards • Do not bring along valuables to the beach. Always leave them in a safety box at your hotel • Use adequate sun protection cream • When encountering difficulties in the sea raise one hand above your head. • Do not take glass bottles to the beach • Avoid mixing alcohol and swimming • When you swim in the sea, consider asking your neighbor to keep an eye on your
belongings, or leave belongings in lockers or with lifeguards
Visiting Sites in Rural Areas • Establish how to observe the cultural protocol of that area • Only visit traditional areas with recognized tourism operators or guides • Use only registered qualified tourism guides • Get advice from your local tourism office in the region for the best routes to follow • Do not stop to pick up strangers
13 MONEY MATTERS Currency South Africa uses the Rand (R) as its currency unit. The Rand is divided into 100 cents. Notes are in R200, R100, R50, R20, and R10. Coins are in denominations of R5, R2, R1 and 50c, 20c, 10c, 5c, 2c and 1c. The exchange rate tends to be in the international tourist’s favour. These include Visa, American Express, Diners Club, and Master Card, which are honoured by most restaurants, hotels, car rental firms, and other points of sale and service. Automatic teller machines (ATM’s) will accept many international bank and credit cards. ATMs are situated outside most banks and in shopping malls. Few gasoline stations accept credit cards. The International and Governance Relations Department is responsible for managing and coordinating all existing Sister City agreements with the following cities:
• Alexandria - Egypt • Bremen – Germany • Bulawayo – Zimbabwe • Chicago – USA • Daejeon - South Korea • Guangzhou – China • Leeds – UK • Le Port - Reunion • Maputo - Mozambique • Nantes - France • New Orleans - USA • Oran - Algeria • Rotterdam – Netherlands
15 All Sister City partnerships are based on formal cooperation agreements that focus on the following areas of cooperation:

DURBAN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT Durban International Airport is situated 15 kilometres to the south of the city centre, caters for international, regional, domestic, and charter flights. There are not many intercontinental flights direct to or from Durban, however, most come or go via Johannesburg or Cape Town. The airport supports a number of international airlines, including South African Airways, British Airways, Singapore Airlines, Air Mauritius, Air Zimbabwe, and Swazi Express. There are also frequent domestic connections linking most cities in South Africa with South African Airways, British Airway/Comair, and South African Airlink. Airport code: DUR 2 (terminals combined in one building). Telephone: (0)31 451 6666. (The new King Shaka Airport will come into operation May 2010) Tourist Info Kiosk A tourism information office, operated jointly by the KwaZulu-Natal Tourism Authority, Tourism Durban, is located in the arrivals terminal. It offers visitors up-to-minute information on events, attractions, and services in the province. It also offers a fax-on-demand, Internet facilities, and instant access to accommodation, sightseeing tours, and the like. The office is open from 8am (9am on Sundays) to 9pm seven days a week. Facilities There are foreign exchange bureau in international arrivals and departures, a retail bank, and automated teller machines (ATMs) in arrivals. The airport also hosts a range of restaurants, bars, and duty-free shops. Transport Coach and shuttle services operate at regular intervals between the airport, the city, and the beachfront hotels. Taxis also run between the airport and the city centre. The departure point for all of these is in front of the departures terminal.
Visas Entry permits are issued free on arrival to visitors on holiday from many Commonwealth and most Western European countries, as well as Japan and the USA. If you aren't entitled to an entry permit, you'll need to get a visa (also free) before you arrive
KING SHAKA INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT King Shaka International, just north of Durban on the eastern seaboard, is South Africa’s newest airport, and it's all geared to be ready & waiting for the FIFA™ 2010 World Cup. It will replace Durban International Airport. Much bigger than Durban International King Shaka International is supposedly three times bigger than Durban International and will be able to handle 8 million passengers a year when it opens (Durban International currently can only handle 4.7 million passengers annually). It's being built at a cost of ZAR 7.4 billion and is the first “Greenfield” airport in South Africa.
19 Room for Growth Future capacity is not a problem either. Durban International is expected to reach its limit by 2015, whereas King Shaka has been designed to expand in stages, up to a projected maximum of 45 million passengers by 2060. ACSA, with the help of local and international experts, has reportedly already developed a special transfer programme for the relocation of Durban International operations to King Shaka. Economic growth The airport is part of the massive Dube Tradeport development under construction on 2 060ha about 35km north of Durban, close to the N2 freeway. This is a cutting-edge complex which includes King Shaka International, a trade zone and an IT platform. Job Creation Some 12 000 people were employed for the building of the airport. Once complete, it's estimated that it will provide permanent employment for 8 000 staff (Durban International has a staff of only 5 000). Advanced facilities King Shaka’s runway is 3.7km in length, long enough to accommodate the world’s biggest passenger craft, the Airbus A380 and its closest rival, the Boeing B747. Expansion to 4km if necessary is possible. The 400 000m² of runways alone are the equivalent of 100 football fields. Ample parking With parking for 6 500 cars, 4 300 more than Durban International, traffic congestion will be greatly eased. Boost for KwaZulu-Natal's growth Durban is Africa’s busiest port and KwaZulu-Natal is the second fastest-growing province in industrial and commercial terms, contributing about 17% to GDP. These new facilities will go a long way to allowing KZN to compete with her richer sister to the north, Gauteng. Almost 50 000 tons of manufactured goods have to be trucked up to Johannesburg every year to be exported by air. As a result, many companies have relocated to Gauteng to cut down on transport costs. It is hoped that they will return once the airport and trade zone are complete. Besides the arrivals and departure terminals, with 16 passenger boarding bridges, and cutting-edge cargo terminal, the Dube Tradeport will also feature hotels, a conference centre, and entertainment area and retail space. An agricultural zone will allow for the cultivation of produce for export, and its proximity to the airport will ensure that time-sensitive crops are shipped out while still as fresh as possible. Potential tenants include local farmers, cooperatives and international horticultural companies.
DUBE TRADE PORT Durban’s ‘aerotropolis’ – the Dube Trade Port alongside the new international airport – has "lift off”! The state-of-the-art development, to be operational by 2010, will comprise: A modern new international passenger and cargo airport facility A trade zone A support zone An agri-zone A cyber port
20 Dube TradePort strives to achieve a critical balance between economic development and environmental sustainability in its efforts to create an international trade platform capable of serving as a significant source of permanent and sustainable employment in KwaZulu-Natal. MISSION Durban is the country’s most attractive film and television production destination. The mission of the Durban Film Office, a division of the Economic Development Department of the EThekwini Municipality is threefold. 21

The locations companies are also listed within the guide under the location’s category. In addition, the Office publishes an annual production guide that will provide local crew listings, technical support information and local soundstage and facility availability. IMPORTANT FACTS ABOUT FILMING IN DURBAN
• The standing policy and regulative authority of the municipal by- laws states that a permit should be applied for from the Durban Film Office - when filming on public property. The permit is free of charge and can easily be obtained by calling the Durban Film Office at +27 31 336 2680 or www.durbanfilmoffice.com
• The City of Durban requires a road closure permit (obtainable through the Durban Film Office or Durban Metro Police, Special Events Department) for any production that interferes with the normal flow of traffic. In addition, the public and business must be notified in advance for such a closure by your Production Coordinator in conjunction with the Durban Film Office’s Film Coordinator.
• Productions filming on city-owned property must attach to its application for permission to film documentary evidence of public liability insurance cover, in an amount not less than R 5 million. For productions involving major stunts, special effects, or pyrotechnics, a higher level of insurance may be required. Please contact the Durban Film Office or the website at www.durbanfilmoffice.com for policy and regulation details.
• Productions filming in residential neighbourhoods and private property are advised to inform the local residential associations and leaflet the neighbourhood.
• Reservation of parking bays is permitted through the Metro Police’s Special Events Department or the Durban Film Office as part of the permit application procedure.
• All permits, location, traffic, emergency, and police requests must be facilitated through the services of the Durban Film Office.

The International Convention Centre Durban (ICC) is one of the most advanced conference facilities in the world. Flexibility and versatility are key factors in the design of this state-of-the-art technology-driven centre. It is a purpose-built, fully air-conditioned centre with three convention halls that are interlinked but separate. Moveable walls allow for a number of different venue configurations. Alternatively, the halls can be opened up to form one large venue with seating for 5000 delegates or 7000m² of column free floor space. Together with its sister venue, the Durban Exhibition Centre, the ICC can double its capacity to accommodate 10 000 conference delegates. The centres can function independently or as two halves of one whole. This is achieved by closing Walnut Road, a brick-paved concourse between the two centres, to provide easy access for delegates. Little wonder then that ICC Durban is where Africa and the world meet. ICC Durban was voted number one in Africa by the 2001, 2002, and 2003 World Travel Awards. Its proven record of accomplishment is unrivalled in Africa. It includes:
• The XII Non-Aligned Movement Summit in 1998, • the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in 1999, • the XIII International Aids Conference in 2000 • WONCA 2001 (World Academy of Family Practitioners) • The World Conference against Racism in 2001 where high profile leaders from all over the
world converged on Durban. • The International Bar Association
30 The ICC now boasts a new indoor arena. This arena is an ideal venue for local and international sports events, large exhibitions, and concerts.

FIFA WORLD CUP 2010 – DURBAN
For four weeks in 2010, South Africa will be the centre of the world, when they host the 2010 FIFA World Cup. The first time the World cup has ever been held in Africa. Durban is one of nine host cities chosen for the FIFA 2010 World cup.
Why Durban? No matter how you look at it, Durban will be the warmest place to be during the 2010 FIFA World Cup™. The weather, the lifestyle, the people, and the activities - you’ll be hard pressed to find a better place to base yourself for the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Kick off your World Cup African Adventure than in a city that has everything to offer just hours from the festivities of the football. Whether it be spending lazy days on the beach, hiking in the awe-inspiring Drakensberg mountains, or spotting one of the Big 5, you are sure to experience it all, starting in our incredible city.
32 To prove just how fabulous Durban is, acclaimed travel publishers, The Lonely Planet, have recently voted us one of the 10 top family beach holiday cities in the world. Durban will be hosting 7 games including a semi-final during the FIFA World Cup. You and 70 000 other fans will have the opportunity to watch these fantastic matches from our brand new, iconic Moses Mabhida Stadium, which is perfectly positioned in the city to offer a short walk to our golden beaches, hotels and beachfront activity. The FIFA Fan Fest™, the only Fan Fest in South Africa to be situated on the beach, will be the meeting place for fans to watch all games not played in Durban. What better way to spend a sunny winter’s day than watching great football and playing in the waves of our warm Indian ocean at half time? To top it off, Durban is only a short flight away from all other stadia around South Africa, giving you yet another reason to make Durban your base camp for your 2010 World Cup adventure. Our ‘2010 and beyond’ strategy is well underway, readying the city for the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ and positioning Durban as Africa’s premier sport and tourism destination in the future. • The stadium is a world-class, state-of-the-art, multi-functional stadium that will meet the requirements of large scale events such as the Olympics
33
• The stadium precinct has been specifically designed to be active 365 days a year, featuring a dynamic entertainment node with retail space, restaurants, an amphitheatre, a cable car and the People’s Park - a landscaped green space for all residents to enjoy
• Durban’s transport infrastructure is being upgraded for 2010 and beyond, ensuring that the city’s visitors and residents are afforded efficient transport facilities and effective accessibility and locomotion in and around the city centre
• The city is currently being revamped, with existing street furniture, signage and lighting being renewed, sidewalks resurfaced and additional foliage planted
Durban’s new Moses Mabhida Stadium has been designed as a state-of-the-art, world-class
stadium for the 2010 FIFA World Cup™, and as a multi-functional, hard-working and easy-to-maintain asset for Durban. This is an asset from which every resident and ratepayer will benefit, as the creation of this precinct means that Durban will be one of the few African cities able to host most of the Olympic disciplines within a single sporting precinct. Conveniently situated close to the city centre, and as part of the Kings Park Sporting Precinct, the Moses Mabhida Stadium will also be the ideal venue for hosting recreational and cultural events.
Quick Facts: • The entire stadium has been designed and built in line with all the latest safety and security
requirements. • Over three million hours of work have been carried out to date • More than 139 000 tonnes of concrete have been poured • Almost 7000 tonnes of steel reinforcement have been used • Over 7512 jobs have been created • The stadium infield has been designed and built in accordance with the latest international
sporting codes. It will have the capacity to hold 70 000 spectators during the 2010 FIFA World Cup™ South Africa and 54 000 in legacy mode thereafter.
• Each seat will be spacious and will have excellent site lines and ease of access is ensured, with 50% of the stadiums seats accessible from the main entrance level.150 suites, housing a total of 7500 seats, will cover a range of different hospitality options.
• The grand centre arch, 106m high, will become a world first tourist attraction, thanks to a high-tech cable car designed to take visitors up to its highest point, where they can disembark and take in breathtaking, panoramic views of the city. This 350m long free-span steel arch weighs 2600 tons.
• The roof, consisting of Teflon coated glass fibre membranes - 46,000 square metres in total – is attached to the arch by 95mm diameter steel cables. Around the perimeter of the stadium structure is an 880m long steel compression ring that maintains the structure of the roof.
• On big match days, Walter Gilbert Road will be closed to traffic, creating a safe pedestrian precinct. Durban’s People Mover bus will stop at the stadium, allowing spectators to park at one of the many parking facilities in town and get to the stadium safely and quickly.
• A new Kings Park Railway Station is being developed adjacent to the stadium, allowing visitors direct access to the stadium precinct.

STREET CHILDREN AND FEEDING SCHEMES IN AND AROUND DURBAN The Health Department, Social Services, Safer Cities, and many other Units within the eThekwini Municipality work hand in hand with NGO’s and other non-profit organizations to provide feeding schemes for the poor of our communities. We are continually seeking to identify hungry communities that cannot feed themselves. The Municipality is involved in the same way in looking out for the interests and protection of Street Children. Citizens and visitors to the City are encouraged not to give food or money to children or adults begging on the streets or at intersections. You are rather encouraged to donate money to charitable organizations as listed below that offer protection and food for vulnerable children and people living on the streets.

DURBAN REFUGEE SERVICE PROVIDERS (DRSP) NETWORK
The DRSP (which is a member of the Consortium for Refugees and Migrants in South Africa -
CORMSA - http://www.cormsa.org.za/about ) promotes not just anti-xenophobia but anti-racism. In
line with CORMSA’s mandate, the work of the DRSP Network involves strengthening the

SPORT
Football Football is the most popular spectator sport in South Africa. In KwaZulu-Natal, the province is divided into regions, which are exactly analogous to the municipal districts. Therefore, there are ten country regions and one metro region (eThekwini). Within these regions are a number of Local Football Associations (LFA’s) which again correspond with the local district boundaries. The eThekwini Metro region contains 100 wards, which make up 19 LFA’s. Clubs within these associations elect officials for each club, which form the nucleus of the SAFA regional council. The SAFA KZN regional committee is elected from this council. The regional committees vote on
65 issues concerning football in SA. Football at grassroots level enjoys a tremendous amount of interest and support. SAFA KZN 031 332 1813
