Our 2013/14 season begins this September and as we head into winter, our London schedule only heats up. Opening with our Hot Tunes, Cold War series, we’ll be exploring music influenced by the political events leading up to and during the Cold War. While the United States of America and the soviet union held the world captive in a steely display of espionage, space races and nuclear daredeviltry, music rebelled with the explosion of jazz and swing; a blistering contrast to the arctic temperatures of international politics. This three-concert series takes a look at the development of jazz culture from the early 1920s and its effect on classical music through the turbulent mid-20th century.

In addition to our Hot Tunes, Cold War CLoSer, we also offer an alternative Valentine’s Day evening, with love songs from baroque to contemporary, featuring the sublime soprano Elin Manahan Thomas, singer/songwriter Mara Carlyle and a free glass of wine!

Our Artistic Director Stephen Layton, leads the Orchestra and Polyphony in our annual performance of Mozart’s Requiem in St John’s Smith Square. St Paul’s Cathedral conductor Andrew Carwood leads an accolade to the second of our Masters, when Handel’s Messiah returns to its perfect setting in St Paul’s Cathedral, cuing in Christmas.

The little people are not forgotten with two more of our ever popular Crash Bang Wallop! family concerts. In November we’ll be discovering the world of the Mad Professor and his effervescent musical laboratory. Then in December, Father Christmas takes time out of his busy schedule to pop down for our Christmas special!

So whether you are a regular City of London Sinfonia concert attender or considering joining us for the first time, we look forward to seeing you at a concert very soon.

We explore music from a time when politics and the explosion of jazz culture influenced and changed classical music. Over three concerts, we look at the influence of jazz from 1922 onwards, set against the backdrop of the turbulent twentieth century era of international politics, economic issues and ideological factors and the effect they had on art and culture as a whole.

Our regular Crash Bang Wallop! family concerts are designed to appeal to kids (big and small) and are an easy introduction to the Orchestra and classical music, with plenty of audience participation and interaction. Before each concert, we run musical and craft activities including conducting a string quartet and taking part in percussion workshops.Concerts are most suitable for children aged 3 – 6 years.

Our popular and informal concert series returns to Village Underground in Shoreditch. Designed to appeal to those who like their live music experiences informal and who enjoy a glass of wine while listening, these concerts allow you to get closer to our musicians away from the traditional setting of a concert hall, and feature an array of guest artists.There will be no interval during the concerts and the bar will be open throughout. Please note seating is on a first come, first served basis.
