Colorful, vibrant, fun to explore...Welcome to Pasadena’s outdoor art gallery!Pasadena’s urban landscape will never be the same again, thanks to the new Rotating Public Art Exhibition Program, providing fresh urban “canvases” every 18 months.

The exhibitions activate unusual locations, transforming small, often unnoticed areas in the City into exciting and stimulating destinations for visitors and residents.

Nine locations host a changing display of artworks that are kinetic, interactive, and have multi-sensory sound and lighting components. Come discover exhibitions that boast a broad range of forms, subjects, styles and color schemes–artworks made of bronze, aluminum and resin.

Many artworks are on loan, while others were commissioned for specific sites.

WHY?Cultural Nexus, the City’s Cultural Master Plan, recommends an increased presence and awareness of public art throughout Pasadena by developing opportunities for local artists, priority project placement in Northwest and East Pasadena neighborhoods, and a program of temporary public art projects on the grounds of libraries and municipal sites. The program is funded by the City’s Capital Public Art Fund.

HOW?Community participation is an essential component of the program. The Cultural Affairs Division hosted a series of community meetings to help launch the program. Participants learned about artwork locations and artist opportunities and were encouraged to spread the word.

Ongoing community participation is ensured by including residents and stakeholders in the periodic artwork selection processes. To assure representation from every part of the City, Council members nominate community representatives from their respective districts who, along with public art professionals, vote for artworks for placement at each of nine sites.

WHERE?Artworks are located in every Council District in Pasadena. The sites include traffic islands, medians, and smaller, more intimate parcels. There are surprises to discover in each of the City’s neighborhoods. Visible from both the street and sidewalk, all of the locations are publicly accessible.

WHEN?The Rotating Public Art Exhibition Program is on! We invite you to explore the artwork and hope that you are inspired. In addition to these nine, new locations to experience public art, eight 30-60 minute Public Art Walking Tours are available in Downtown and Old Pasadena. Please enjoy the variety, diversity, and breadth of what Pasadena public art has to offer.

To learn more about the artists and artworks currently on exhibition, to view maps and bus routes of the artwork locations, and to see more public art in Pasadena, please visit our website www.cityofpasadena.net/arts or call the Cultural Affairs Division at 626-744-7062.
