Plantation Originally built around farmland and later additions of approxi-mately 100 acres from the Palmer-Ball farm, the original subdivi-sion was established for the Plantation swim club in existence from 1956 until 2005. The Plantation swim club was the home of the National Swim and Diving Championships as seen on ABC Sports for many years. The City of Plantation was incorporated as a 5th Class City in 1960. Part of the original land division in-cluded a gift to the Bishop for the establishment of Mother of Good Council parish. After the blending of Mother of Good Counsel and Our Lady of Transfiguration schools by the Archdi-ocese, the property was purchased by Portland Christian School.

In the 2006 Neighborhood Assessment, statistics were presented comparing the City of Plantation to Louisville Metro per-

centages and those of the regional Metro Statistical Area. In this Update, statistics are presented comparing 2006 and 2012

data. 2012 data is based on Population Highlights 2008-2012 from the American Community Survey 5-Year Estimates.

Median household income 2012 2006

Comparison of Census population demographics shows that Plantation has had a slight decrease in overall population, but more notably the City’s population has become more diverse. Median age has remained fairly constant, in the mid-30’s. School enrollment statistics were incomplete in 2006, but it is clear that some shifts in school age children has occurred. Median household income has risen slightly, which is a positive indicator given the economic challenges of the last 5 years. Occupations have shifted slightly, with more people working in service industries, production and transportation - and notably working from home. Housing values have continued to rise, even given the effects of the 2008 housing crisis. The city does face an increase in vacant properties, which is reflected in concerns raised in the neighborhood survey summarized on the following pages.

2012 2006

Total housing units 350 363

Occupied housing units 330 360

Vacant housing units 20 3

Median home value $145,200 $107,100

Owner-occupied housing units 246 244

Survey Highlights

Plantation - Survey Results 2013

Two significant questions asked in the survey related to residents perceptions of their neighborhood. These two charts graphically summarize much of the text on the preceding page and quickly highlight key areas of satisfaction and also, issues of concern. The neighborhood’s accessibility, services, and friendliness all contribute to resident’s desire to live in, and remain in the community. Areas of concern are reflected in statements related to property upkeep, traffic issues, and a desire for more recreational and youth facilities. Responses also indicate that people may not know their neighbors as well as they once did and have a desire to work together to address issues.
