Monarch Butterfly WalksOne of the few places in Alameda County to witness this

natural phenomenon! Flying thousands of miles at speeds ofup to 25 miles per hour, Monarch butterflies return annuallyto the same trees at the San Leandro Marina and hunkerdown to spend the winter. Learn about the life cycle andmysterious migrations from a butterfly expert. After a brieftalk, take a short walk to see large clusters of butterflies onthe Eucalyptus trees. Wear comfortable shoes that can getdirty. Bring binoculars or borrow ours!

Recycling News• Fall Leaf BagsThe City of San Leandro is offering free paper Fall Leaf Bags toresidents from October 3, 2011, through January 13, 2012. Usethe bags to collect and recycle excess leaves that do not fit intoyour yard clippings container. The bags will be collectedcurbside on your regularly scheduled collection day. The freebags are available starting October 1 at City Hall, AlamedaCounty Industries, the Oro Loma Sanitary District and the PublicWorks Service Center. Limit 15 per household.

AQUABABES • 6months - 3 yearsSign up for Aquababes and let your child enjoy their first aquatic experience. This class is great for water introduction and parent/child bondingwhile getting a little physical exercise. Participants will enjoy games as well as water safety lessons. Parents are to accompany their children in thepool. If children are not potty-trained, they must wear leak-proof diapers.

TINY TOTS • 3 - 5 yearsThis class is designed to teach basic water skills, breath holding, floating, jumping in, and more depending upon the child’s swimming interest andability. Children have a great time learning new skills while building up their confidence in and around water. Parents do not accompany childreninto the pool.

BEGINNERS • 6 - 16 yearsThis class will increase your child’s confidence in water and create a solid swimming foundation. The class emphasizes the basics, including floatingand kicking on both front and back, alternating arm action, rhythmic breathing, combined stroke on front and back, turning over front to back andback to front, water safety moves, and how to get help in an emergency. This class is for children entering levels 1 or 2 with little or no swimmingexperience.

INTERMEDIATE • 6 - 16 yearsThis intermediate-level class teaches the various swim strokes, emphasizing on the fundamentals of front crawl, backstroke, elementary backstroke,deep-water bobbing, introduction to sidestroke and breaststroke, turns at the wall, treading water, self-rescue skills, jumping into deep water with alifejacket and familiarity with CPR and rescue breathing. This class is for children entering levels 3 or 4.

ADVANCED • 6 - 16 yearsThis advanced-level class works on techniques and helps your child refine their strokes; front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke, breaststroke,sidestroke and butterfly. Additionally, this class will familiarize your child with more difficult techniques like alternate breathing, swimmingunderwater, deep-water bobbing, turns at the wall, diving safety, alternative kicks for treading water, and the approach stroke. By the end of thecourse, your child will also know how to incorporate learn-to-swim skills and activities into lifetime fitness, various conditioning principles and in-water rescue techniques. This class is for children entering level 5, 6 or 7.

SEMI-PRIVATE - BEGINNER • 6 - 16 yearsThis class is for children with little or no swimming experience that need a smaller class environment. This class will increase your child’s confidencein water and create a solid swimming foundation. Lesson emphasis is on starts, turns,endurance, concentration, and stroke correction. Prerequisite for beginners: Ability to swim 15-yd. crawl stroke while breathing to the side.Prerequisite for advanced: Ability to swim 25-yd. crawl stroke while breathing to the side. Also must have taken and completed competitive swimfor beginners.

EXCEPTIONAL NEEDSElementary school-aged children who are physically or mentally challenged. Parents must enter the water with the student. This class offersopportunities for parent/child bonding while your child develops new skills in the water.

Kiddie Kollege

This program provides preschool children with a variety ofrecreation activities designed to develop social skills,independence, and positive self-esteem in a safe andsupportive environment. Activities include arts and crafts,circle time, sharing, free play and more. Children must bepotty trained at the start of the class.

Kiddie Kollege and Kindergarten Readiness parents arestrongly encouraged to work in the classroom once persession.
