    HISTORYy City planning was born FIFTEEN (15) years prior to World War I. It

    was the direct offspring of Progressive Era Urban Reform and its

    expanded ideal of the public interest, as well as culminating

    responses to the rise of great urban centers dating back to themiddle decades of the NINETEENTH (19th)CENTURY.

    DEVELOPMENTS DUE TO CITY PLANNING

    y Water supply, sewerage, public par systems, civic art, land fill, rapid

    transit and still other concerns about focal points for nineteenthcentury undertakings.

    y Streets were aligned to take advantage of cooling breezes, andarcades designed to shield pedestrians from sun and rain.

    y Open spaces hard spaces such as plazas, malls, courtyards,provides settings for public activities of all kinds. Soft spaces such as

    parks, gardens, lawns and nature preserves provide essential reliefs

    from harsh urban conditions and serve as space for recreationalactivities.
