CITY RECITAL HALL 2017

I’ve been coming to City Recital Hall for years. My first visit was at one of the “test” concerts prior to the official opening on 30 October 1999.

What I remember of that first moment was the beauty of the space, and how great the music sounded. Fast forward to today and there’s still the thrill of witnessing a great performance here and jumping to my feet with 1000 others for a standing ovation.

There are around 200 concerts presented in this program. The offering is broad – classical, contemporary, multi-artform – many old favourites and some exciting new works. There are concerts for little kids and for big kids like many of us, me included.

City Recital Hall was built for live music. There will undoubtedly be some magical moments in 2017. We invite you to turn the page, pick your moment, and join us here.

ELAINE CHIA CEO

2017 sees a broad range of performances at City Recital Hall celebrating the depth and diversity of our nation’s creative expression, including several concerts that mark major milestones of our partners.

City Recital Hall is acknowledged by performers and audiences alike as one of the finest venues for acoustic performances.

We are delighted that Australia’s finest music organisations, our Key Presenters, will perform a substantial portion of their annual Sydney seasons here.

We acknowledge and thank our Principal Sponsor, the City of Sydney, whose ongoing support ensures we can continue to bring you exceptional live music experiences.

I look forward to seeing you at City Recital Hall in 2017.

It’s all about the voice with Norwegian singer Ane Brun. Sure, there are also her exquisite songs, which run from melancholy and jazzy right through to playful, sunny pop; and, of course, her wicked dance moves. But it’s Brun’s crystal clear, sweet, powerful voice that takes your breath away. In this solo show, Brun performs songs from her six albums, including the perfectly-titled When I’m Free.

The Alim Qasimov Ensemble performs a unique interpretation of two rich Azerbaijani musical traditions – mugham, a sparse and poetic classical music related to Persian, Turkish and Arabic traditions, and ashiq songs, the popular full-throated music of troubadours. The sextet features the exuberant polyphonic vocals of Qasimov and his daughter Fargana, with instrumentalists performing on lutes, spike fiddles, reed instruments and hand drums. Together they weave improvised passages through intricate folk songs to create an ecstatic night for the soul.

A concert featuring two great masters of the Classical era: Mozart and Haydn. After stunning audiences with his virtuosity in the Sydney International Piano Competition, winner Andrey Gugnin has chosen Mozart’s introspective and gracious tribute to JC Bach for his first engagement with the SSO. Haydn’s trademark wit is highlighted in a brilliant and inventive symphony that shows off the virtuosity of the orchestra.

Playing the classic Lloyd Cole songbook 1983-1996

Through both his lauded work fronting Lloyd Cole and The Commotions from 1984 to 1989, and subsequently his more eclectic solo efforts, Lloyd Cole has established himself as one of the most articulate and acute songwriters of his generation. Following on from a hugely successful Australian tour in 2014, Lloyd returns in 2017

with The Retrospective. To celebrate the release of his new 1983-1996 anthology, Lloyd performs songs exclusively from this classic period in an intimate one-man acoustic setting.

DALMATICA: CHANTS OF THE ADRIATIC

Grandly intimate, honeyed and haunting, this award-winning ensemble brings to life a rich and rarely heard choral tradition from the banks of the Adriatic. Dalmatica pairs four women from medieval vocal ensemble Dialogos with Kantaduri, a group of six Croatian cantors. The result is a fascinating, atmospheric and profound journey through the liturgical year: haunting chants and mysterious harmonies, stitched together by specialist performers with clarity and precision.

LUBOMYR MELNYK

Lubomyr Melnyk has spent 40 years developing a style he calls “continuous music”. He is the fastest pianist in the world – Guinness-verified. He can play nearly 20 notes per second, a near-overwhelming but perfectly controlled roll that blurs into a gorgeously cohesive whole. Combining the soaring density of post-rock and the virtuosic delicacy of minimalist piano, the result is a meditative, mind-bending cloud of abstract sound, with clear emotions and images appearing out of the pointillist flurry, like the figures on a just-out-of-tune TV. There is no other performer quite like him.

Sex. Adultery. Betrayal. Murder. Tolstoy’s novella The Kreutzer Sonata has it all. And Janáček’s musical rendering of this scandalous tale serves as the thread for this innovative opening to ACO’s 2017 season.

Janáček’s Kreutzer Sonata is interwoven with American folk songs, along with John Adams’ redemptive Shaker Loops, with folk musician Sam Amidon joining Pekka Kuusisto on vocals and banjo for this journey from hell to heaven.

Amidon, whose interpretations of American folksongs have been described as “surreal”, “magical” and “quietly psychedelic”, makes his ACO debut.

He is out of pocket. Out of sorts. And out of time. A career on the brink of ruin.

Then it happens. The words that change his life forever. He can’t sleep, can’t eat. The words devour him. Command his soul to create. Day after day for 24 days he doesn’t stop, for he has seen “the very face of God”.

These are the words of Handel’s most famous oratorio and the music of his soul. This is Handel’s Messiah.

Concerts by Eighth Blackbird celebrate the joy of the new. The closest thing classical music has to a rock band, this ensemble – described by the LA Times as a collection of “supermusicians” – revels in the work of living composers, played with love, virtuosity and enjoyment.

On the program is Nico Muhly’s Doublespeak, which toys wittily with his familiar minimalist sound world, and Bryce Dessner’s (from indie pop band The National) enthralling contemporary

pondering of violence and American identity, Murder Ballades. Holly Harrison is a bright new star in the Australian composition sky and her strikingly imaginative music has been commissioned for this tour. Ted Hearne’s intense work By-By Huey has self-destruction at its heart and Checkered Shade is described by composer Timo Andres as “a gradual zoom outward” that coalesces to a delicately serene chorale.

Beethoven’s Septet in E flat major, Op.20 was first performed at an aristocratic tea-party in 1800. Filled with Mozartean charm and elegance, the piece has gone on to become one of the most popular septets ever written. It is coupled with the ever-popular Trio élégiaque No.1 in G minor by Rachmaninoff, written when he was 19 years old. Also included is Cimarosa’s Concerto for Clarinet and Strings. Originally for oboe, this delightful work is reimagined to showcase the virtuosic and lyrical side of the clarinet.

CELEBRATING MIKIS THEODORAKIS CANTO GENERAL AND POPULAR GREEK SONGS

CITY RECITAL HALL AND THE GREEK ORTHODOX COMMUNITY OF NSW

The Greek Festival of Sydney returns to City Recital Hall, promising another huge festival finale and a perfect opportunity to revel in the music and culture of Greece.

This year’s concert, conducted by George Ellis, celebrates the music of iconic Greek composer Mikis Theodorakis, best known for his theme to Zorba the Greek. His work, both classical and popular, draws on the rich musical heritage of his homeland.

Mezzo soprano Livia Brash and baritone Hayden Barrington combine with Sydney Philharmonia Choir to perform Theodorakis’ vibrant oratorio, Canto General. Performed in Spanish and based on Chilean Nobel-laureate

Pablo Neruda’s book of poems, Canto General is an epic history of South America.

The tempo rises in the concert’s second half as special guest, Greek vocalist Dimitris Basis performs laika tragoudia – ‘popular songs’ by Theodorakis, celebrating life and love.

A serious classical concert is underway when a mischievous visitor with a red nose arrives on stage and tries to take over the performance. The Conductor keeps conducting and the orchestra keeps playing, but the Clown’s cheeky antics create havoc on stage. Will the disgruntled Conductor and the playful Clown ever become friends?

The Conductor and the Clown is a mini symphony show created especially for kids. Combining laugh-out-loud physical comedy with works by Mozart, Beethoven, Tchaikovsky and other great composers, the show introduces children aged 4-12 years to the joys of classical music with laughter and fun. Charismatic Babies Proms conductor George Ellis and multi-talented jazz musician and entertainer George Washingmachine star in this delightful performance.

Warning – this show has been described as pants-droppingly hilarious.

This program showcases the extraordinary talents of the ACO’s musicians. Principal Violin Satu Vänskä takes on the devilishly dazzling Harmonic Labyrinth by Locatelli, whose concerto bears the inscription “facilis aditus, difficilis exitus” – easy to enter, difficult to exit.

Joining her in Vivaldi’s Concerto for Two Violins and Cello is Glenn Christensen, who first performed with the ACO in 2001 as a member of Gondwana Voices, then in 2014 as an Emerging Artist. He is now a full-time member of the ACO.

SEVEN STORIES

City Recital Hall and Ensemble Offspring present the world premiere of Seven Stories, a multi-sensory work that combines music, storytelling and film.

When we boil down the world’s vast cauldron of myths, legends and literature, seven archetypal stories emerge; they are the bones of our human experience.

Seven Stories brings together an eclectic line-up of Australian female composers Amanda Brown, Kyls Burtland, Jodi Phillis, Jane Sheldon, Bree van Reyk, Sally Whitwell and Caitlin Yeo; Ensemble Offspring musicians on vocals and performing on an array of percussion, string, keyboard and wind instruments; acclaimed playwright and collaborative theatre maker Hilary Bell and video artist Sarah-Jane Woulahan.

This remarkable array of Australian talent writes and performs for the theatres and concert halls of the nation. They span pop, rock, classical, contemporary music, playwriting, screenwriting, film, video and multimedia.

Weaving together the seven archetypal stories, merging genres and art-forms they see the world from a female perspective, creating a powerful new Australian work that places women centre stage.

Exhilarating, exuberant, virtuosic: the Pacifica Quartet has won hearts around the world for its passionate performances, treading that miraculous line between naked emotion and scrupulous musicianship.

Such intensity throws a brilliant light onto the pure, architectural beauty of Haydn’s cherished String Quartet Op.76 No.1. Mendelssohn’s magnificent first string quartet is the centrepiece of program one; the heart-on-sleeve, melodic riches of these two leaders of composition are natural territory for the Pacifica Quartet.

Nigel Westlake fits perfectly in this context, offering players and listeners an enticing palette of lyricism and rhythm. Shostakovich holds a special place in the life of the Pacifica Quartet and in program two they perform Quartet No.3, which reflects the dark days of the USSR, veering between tragedy and satire in music that leaves no listener unmoved.

The ever-popular Murray Cook, known to kids as the red Wiggle, narrates Prokofiev’s charming musical tale. Conducted by George Ellis, Peter and The Wolf tells the story of a curious and courageous boy, his fearful grandfather, his animal friends and a big bad wolf.

With different instruments in the orchestra depicting each character, we discover how a flute can sound like a bird, an oboe like a duck and the clarinet like a slinky cat. Peter, played by the string section, ignores his grandfather’s advice

and goes into the meadow to play. The horns sound and out of the forest comes the wolf. Will Peter and his friends get out of trouble? Can they outsmart the wolf?

First performed in 1936, this classic children’s work continues to enchant kids of all ages.

Pianist Kristian Bezuidenhout is one of the world’s leading performers of Mozart. Since 2009, he has been recording the complete keyboard music of Mozart. As a pianist, Mozart’s own performances stunned Viennese concertgoers and paved the way for the likes of Beethoven and the Romantics to follow.

Alongside Richard Tognetti and an intimate ACO ensemble, Kristian takes on Mozart’s Piano Concerto No.13. Mozart himself wrote that this concerto could be “performed with full orchestra…or merely a quattro”, which is how it will be presented here.

Schumann’s String Quartet and Piano Quintet complete the program. Fresh, buoyant and inventive, these two magnificent works have been called “the most perfect of all the products of his genius.”

Three young virtuosi with countless solo prizes and achievements to their names: together, the music-making of the Sitkovetsky Trio is little short of miraculous. In their hands the piano trio becomes a miniature orchestra, making huge worlds of colour and texture from their personal, intimate musical format.

Their program opens with Rachmaninoff’s Trio élégiaque No.1, its decidedly Russian flavour finding a cousin in Shostakovich’s second trio, which moves from its ghostly opening cello solo through to the emotionally wrenching finale. SITKOVETSKY

TRIO

In his Piano Trio, Australian composer Lachlan Skipworth draws on inspiration from a Japanese shakuhachi melody known as Pounding Wave that allows the Trio to grow organically through the three movements. The program concludes with Mendelssohn’s Trio, one of the showiest, life-affirming finales in the repertoire: it makes a perfect end to a thoroughly uplifting concert.

UNASHAMEDLY ORIGINAL

Sick of the cold? Park yourself at City Recital Hall for a weekend of performances that are, well, unashamedly original.

Our collaborators have let their imaginations run wild to create multidisciplinary experiences that push the envelope of sight and sound.

These original works don’t fit neatly into any music style or genre. In fact, they refuse to be stereotyped. Don’t try to pin it down. Just sit back and enjoy the journey.

Highlights of this two-day festival include Speak Percussion’s Fluorophone, where analogue and digital fluorescent lights, the naked flame, strobe lights and LED discs combine with percussion to create a kaleidoscopic sound world. And, in Transducer, Speak Percussion’s Artistic Director Eugene Ughetti and new media artist Robin Fox

explore the relationship between percussion and the microphone, space and kinetics, and acoustic and processed sound.

One of Australia’s most acclaimed visual artists, Wendy Sharpe, joins forces with Australian Art Quartet to recreate William Hogarth’s masterpiece, live on stage, with music by Handel, Pärt and Shostakovich, in The Enraged Musicians.

Pick up a two-day pass to access all showcase performances. The full program is announced and single tickets go on sale in April 2017. Visit cityrecitalhall.com for details.

SCHUBERT’S TROUTPerhaps no other piece in the chamber music repertoire has yet to surpass the popularity of Schubert’s Piano Quintet in A major, nicknamed ‘The Trout’. Its wistful melodies, rich and colourful harmonies, coupled with a light and lively character, sit happily alongside Schubert’s Octet in F major. The Octet boasts the largest scale of any chamber work by Schubert. While the piece is heavily based on Beethoven’s Septet in E flat major, Op.20, the melody and beauty that infuse it are quintessentially Schubert.

Introducing Mountain – an epic cinematic and musical collaboration between the ACO and BAFTA-nominated Sherpa director, Jennifer Peedom.

How have mountains now come to hold us spellbound, drawing us into their dominion, often at the cost of our lives?

Shot by the world’s leading high altitude cinematographers, with narration written by celebrated British writer, Robert Macfarlane, this film explores the nature of our modern fascination with mountains. At these events the ACO will perform live with the film.

Throughout production, Richard Tognetti worked with Jennifer Peedom to assemble a stunning soundscape to mirror the serenity, magnitude and terror of the landscapes filmed, with works by Chopin, Grieg, Vivaldi, Corelli, Beethoven and new works by Richard himself.

Mountain is a unique musical journey through vistas that few have visited and none have seen in quite this way.

The secret behind the love affair between this renowned ensemble and its Australian public is both the simplest and hardest thing about chamber music: the interplay between different creative personalities. Their concerts glow with warmth and friendship, a mutual affection and happiness whose effects reach far out into the auditorium.

On this tour the Takács Quartet perform two quartets from Haydn’s final complete chamber music collection, Op.76, as well as Beethoven’s gentle and introverted Op.127. Dvořák’s Quartet No.14 is full of joyous Czech folk elements, bringing out a delicious zest in the open-hearted Takács playing style. Carl Vine’s String Quartet No.6 is written especially for the Takács Quartet – a fitting position for a composer with such a long personal friendship with the musicians on stage.

DIVAA humorous celebration of Australian divas, June Bronhill and Dame Joan Sutherland.

Born June Gough, Bronhill adopted her stage name, an abbreviation of her birthplace of Broken Hill, as homage to the town that raised funds to send her to study overseas. Bronhill performed extensively in London and in Australia as a leading lady in opera, operetta and music theatre.

Dame Joan Sutherland is a name synonymous with superlatives. Dubbed “La Stupenda” by Italian audiences after a performance at La Fenice in 1960, Luciano Pavarotti also called Sutherland the “Voice of the Century”.

In this world premiere part-theatre, part-opera celebration of these two giants, Australia’s current leading lady of opera and musical theatre Amelia Farrugia becomes…DIVA.

Journey to the Elizabethan era with the Sydney Philharmonia Choirs Symphony Chorus and works inspired by a golden age of English art. Thomas Tallis and Thomas Tomkins created a unique style of choral music: expressive, dramatic and intimate. A great English composer of a later generation rediscovered their music and was profoundly transformed: Ralph Vaughan Williams paid tribute to his forebear in his Tallis Fantasia and invoked the spirit of Shakespeare in his gorgeous Serenade to Music, but it is the Five Tudor Portraits that are Vaughan Williams’ most extended love letter to Olde England. Teeming with humanity

and humour, Five Tudor Portraits is deservedly one of Vaughan Williams’ most beloved works and a showpiece for a spirited, brilliant choir.

Norwegian violinist and Artistic Director of the Arctic Philharmonic Chamber Orchestra, Henning Kraggerud has built a reputation as the world’s leading interpreter of Grieg. Troubled by the dearth of Norwegian works for violin and orchestra, Kraggerud arranged all three of Grieg’s violin sonatas as concertos with orchestral accompaniment.

Concerto No.3, which is replete with folk melodies and rhythms, is Nordic pastoralism at its very best. The String Quartet No.1 is Grieg at the vanguard of new music, with its exotic flavouring. And the melancholic hue of the Two Nordic Melodies, while local in

origin, is universal in its appeal and completes this Arctic tableau.

Australian composer Ross Edwards’ new work, Entwinings, continues the arcadian feel of the program, while bringing a distinctly antipodean warmth to the concert.

When brilliant adventurers Nicolas Altstaedt and Aleksandar Madžar step onto the stage they draw audiences in with their imaginative playing, attention to style and a great sense of being in love with the music.

The tour repertoire chosen by this intrepid duo offers a delicious survey of cello sonatas including Brahms’ second sonata and Debussy’s sublime contribution to the genre. Nadia Boulanger’s

tantalising and attractive Three Pieces is performed, as well as music by American composer Samuel Barber, whose Sonata cellists love to play because “it lets the cello sing”. Shostakovich’s Sonata takes audiences on an extraordinary emotional journey and a little homage to Shostakovich sneaks its way into the Sonata by Britten. Taking us up to the present day is a new work from a young Australian composer, Jakub Jankowski.

A BRAHMS AFFAIROMEGA ENSEMBLE

Brahms and Schumann were close friends and both enamoured with their muse, Clara Schumann; a virtuoso pianist and composer in her own right. Clara, the muse, is evident in all Schumann’s music and his Fantasiestücke, Op.73 represents the unbridled passion found in the free imagination of the Romantic composer. Composer Borodin was also a chemist and doctor, and his String Quartet No.1 is the perfect cohesion of musical ideas from a scientific mind. Join Omega to celebrate some of the Romantic era’s most exquisite chamber music.

Glamorous divas and showy tenors are used to the spotlight, but it’s a rare performer who can take a sonorous bass and make it world famous. Ferruccio Furlanetto is that performer: a gifted singer-actor with a captivating voice.

OPERA AUSTRALIA The world’s greatest living flautist Emmanuel Pahud is back! Twelve years after his Australian debut, one of Richard Tognetti’s great musical friends returns to perform with the Australian Chamber Orchestra.

This program is like an historical adventure – tracing the Franco-Germanic lineage from Bach senior, to his son Carl Philipp Emanuel, through to Franck, Debussy, Ravel and Boulez.

And it gives our soloist an opportunity to stand alone in the spotlight with CPE Bach’s Flute Sonata, a stunning example of the composer’s genius, and Debussy’s Syrinx, which may well be the greatest solo flute piece of all time.

Ravel’s String Quartet is brimming with seductive melodies, iridescent pizzicato passages and luscious harmonies. Franck’s great Violin Sonata is arranged here for flute and strings by Richard Tognetti.

PIANO LESSONS BY ANNA GOLDSWORTHY

CITY RECITAL HALL Part play, part concert, Piano Lessons tells the story of Anna Goldsworthy’s metamorphosis from gawky nine-year-old schoolgirl to concert pianist under the passionate tutelage of Russian émigré Eleanora Sivan. This adaptation of her award-winning memoir brings Anna Goldsworthy to the stage to play herself, performing sublime piano pieces by Mozart, Liszt and Chopin.

As the charismatic teacher inspires and challenges Anna, we learn what it takes to be a virtuoso; physically, psychologically and emotionally.

Anna is at once brutally honest, self-deprecating and funny and Mrs Sivan’s wisdom is not confined to music; these are also lessons in life.

Directed by Michael Futcher and with a stand-out performance by Helen Howard as Mrs Sivan, this critically acclaimed production gives a rare and intimate glimpse into the life of a professional musician.

Produced by Metro Arts. Originally commissioned and produced by Queensland Music Festival 2011 in association with QPAC.

Britain’s most revolutionary orchestra makes its first, widely anticipated full tour of Australia in 2017. This ground-breaking orchestra is a band of 20 musicians, playing on period instruments and led by the acclaimed violinist Rachel Podger.

The wonderful, forward-looking, revolutionary epoch, which gives the orchestra its name, is brought to enchanting life through heavenly violin concertos by Mozart, and a sparkling sinfonia by his teacher Johann Christian Bach. Haydn’s Symphony No.36 sets the tone perfectly, as the epitome of grace – not least in a ravishing slow movement, which is practically a tiny violin concerto in itself.

Lovers of chamber music adore the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment as a kind of supersized chamber ensemble. Each player brings a soloistic level of talent and engagement to a greater whole – and the effect is unforgettable!

CORONATION OF POPPEA

Coronation of Poppea is a towering masterpiece of superbly crafted characterisation and heartbreaking beauty set to exquisite, sensuous music culminating in the famous duet ‘Pur ti miro’. Set in the decadent court of ancient Rome, the opera traces the fallout from the scandalous liaison between courtesan Poppea Sabina and Nero; Emperor, madman, murderer.

Director Mark Gaal and conductor Erin Helyard collaborate on their third production together, and lead an exemplary cast headed by mezzo soprano Helen Sherman, who thrilled audiences in the Pinchgut Opera production of Bajazet, and the Korean-American countertenor Kangmin Justin Kim, a rising international star.
