As Woman’s Month approaches, aCrossroads woman who lost every-thing in a fire she alleges was caused
by her live-in-lover, has spoken for the firsttime of her dilemma at the hands of a manshe says is possessive, jealous and a ragingbully. His act of mindless jealousy has now left
a number of children stranded and the own-er of their educare centrewithout an incomeafter the crèche was set on fire on Saturdayevening, allegedly by the boyfriend.Zanele Jaca, 53, owner of Siqalo Educare
in Crossroads is still at a loss for words afterreturning from a funeral in Langa to a veryfurious lover, who then set the crèche, theirbedroom, kitchen and living room on fire.Jaca said she suspected her daywas going
to be spoiled after the beau called her non-stop onher phonewhile shewas at the funer-al of a relative in Langa.“He started using foul language, and sent
me derogatory messages.”Returning home in a lift seemed to exacer-
bate the his fury.“As I was being dropped off in front of
my house, he became so enraged that he be-came violent and threatened to burn thehouse to the ground.”Jaca said although she is on chronicmedi-
cation, to save her life, she jumped out of herbedroom window, because the man “reallymeant business”.She said she thenwatched in horror as the
man took a sleeping sponge, dub it in paraf-fin, set it alight and throw it in her bedroom.“It was all planned,” she said.“He does not smoke, but had a match in
his hand that day,” she added. The firespread to other rooms and she lost every-thing. “Everything is gone, including thefurniture in the crèche.”Fortunately, noonewas harmed. The house and crèche are nowa pile of rubble with neither electricity norwater connections. Jaca claimed that whatthe man did was the culmination of almosta decade of unhappiness and abuse at thehands of the man. “For too long I have pro-tected him.” Jaca revealed a litany of abuseof a person she described as also being pos-sessive andwho could not stand her absencefrom his sight. “This was the first time that
I had been anywhere else without him incompany, in eight years. He is a very jealousman. Iwas not even allowed to socialisewithotherpeople.” “This is also the first time thatI am opening up about the abuse I have en-dured under him... I was not happy, but I
kept quiet,” Jaca revealed.“I am now appealing to Good Samaritans
tohelpmere-build, because I cannotdowith-out the crèche...it is my passion and liveli-hood,” she added. Lieutenant Bheki Xulu, ofPhilippi-East SAPS Corporate Communica-
tion, said the police were investigating acase of arson and that the suspect is still atlarge. Margaret Hewu, 53, Jaca’s neighbour, said they were caught by surprise by theboyfriend’s behaviour.V Jaca is available at: 074 625 2979

‘Woza weekend’ is the lifeblood koKasi“TGIF.”- This abbreviation, you
are likely to see on a Friday, and to the uninitiated, it
stands for ‘Thanks God it’s Friday.”Folk are known to scream these wordssoon as they drag themselves out of bedon a Friday. This is in anticipation ofthe weekend ahead, more than anythingelse, and relief in the knowledge that abreak is looming from a hectic workschedule. For those studying, it is a temporary
putting up of feet, away from the booksand the burning of the midnight oil.Having said that, weekends in our
townships mean different things todifferent people, but we tend to agree onone thing, and that is that they arealways welcome.Imagine a life without weekends,
where we have to slog every day andevery hour of our lives. Our veryexistence would be an exhaustingexercise. It’s interesting to see how people
suddenly change from ‘midweek mode’
to ‘weekend mode’ as soon as they leavetheir workplaces, and this can beevidenced by way of dressing, theaccent, demeanour, the company onekeeps. This reminds me of a former high
school teacher. An unassuming profes-sor, who was well-liked. Yet, when Ibump into him on weekends, I cannothelp but draw comparisons of him andMichael Jackson or Wacko Jacko, for heis always in his element. In one in-stance, I met him and noticed he wasclutching a bottle of whisky. It turns
out he had spilled the stuff on the floorby accident, but, in denial, racedtowards me asking, “Who dropped mybottle?”On Tuesday, he posted this on a social
network site: “sitting in a police cellwith oontshonalanga no Mpumalanga. On the wet ground watching ‘ma sep**s’ search. Having 4 slices of bread assupper @ 5pm nd 28s taking the rest,ma se p**s. not only for one day bt 4full days. 4 a warrant that never was. Incourt there’s no warrant changes tobusiness robbery. A robbery @ a nearbytavern. My fingerprints all over savan-nah bottles. Ma se p**s. I hv a closerelationship with beer nd I dnt weargloves whn drinking. At the end of theday no charge against me. Just chang-ing cells btwn belvil nd delft for 4 days.ma se p**s gonna sue tht station.”I have also noticed that weekends
provide a platform in kasi for guys toplay big. They do this to impress theopposite sex. It is not uncommon to seechaps driving the sleekest German
machines or indulging in the finest maltwhiskey. But if I have to give theweekend credit for anything, it has tobe that it is the only period (besidesend-of-year holidays) we get to spendvaluable time with family and friends. For a moment we forget about thestresses we have encountered fromMonday morning to Friday afternoon. The thought of that tjatjarag colleague
who gets on your nerve is put on theback burner. Chesa nyama and carwash businesses make a killing, espe-cially on payday weekends.Yet, may I lament, that the negative
side of a weekend in Visionland is ofevil forces always lurking in thebackground. Just this past weekend inmy area, Lower Crossroads, a womanand her two kids perished in a fire.May their beautiful souls rest in peace. In the middle of all the merrymaking,
we tend to drop our guard. We leave thedoor unlocked. We walk at night. Weleave our young ones to their devices.Still, I look forward to a weekend.

MEC springs hope for blind manMBONGISENI MASEKO
Like the blind man in the scrip-tures, Booysen Mgoqi’s beliefin the kindness of others has
been restored after a visit to hisshack by Bonginkosi Madikizela,MEC for Human Settlements, onThursday, at Super-Nkathazo,Nyanga.Mgoqi, 38, informed Madikizela
that he had long “lost hope” that hewould one day own a decent houseafter all his previous pleas hadseemingly fallen on deaf ears.“The leaders here know my
plight, but nobody seemed to takeme seriously. I have tried in vainto get a house. I have now given up.The local councillor never evenvisits me here, but he knows aboutmy story.“I wish to get a decent house so
that I will not have to walk a dis-tance at night to the toilet. I amalsoscared that I will burn to deathshould a fire start here.I really need a house, because of
my situation. All present and pre-vious councillors have failed tohelp me,” Mgoqi said. The toilets aremetres away from
his one room shack and he has towalk that distance even at night toanswer the call of nature. To prove this point, he said two
years ago, hewasaccostedby thugswho waylaid him as he emergedfrom the toilet. The thugs tookhis cell phone, tel-
evision set and other belongings.Mgogi lost his sight in 1991 after
“eating poison” in Lady Frere.“I became very sick and a doctor
toldme that I ate poisonwhich alsodrained the water in my eyes,” headded. He has been staying at the flats
next toNyangaPolice Station since1983 and moved to the area about15 years ago.He stays alone in his very neat
shack.“God is with me. I can clean the
housemyself. I can preparemy bedand other things.I sometimes ask my girlfriend
who stays around the area to comeand help me with the things that Icannot do such as washing myclothes,” he said.Mgogi has even undergone a two
year course in aromatherapy. He has worked for Light and
Healing Centre, which is a NonProfit Organisation (NGO) inPlumstead. He now survives on his disabili-
ty grant.Mgogi has a ten year old sonwho
stays with his mother in Cross-roads.Madikizela described Mgoqi’s
condition as “pain.”“This is a pain. There is no care
here, because theymust knowwhomust be prioritised in the area.Normally I do not give promises, but I am going to take your detailsand check your status to see if youhave never owned a house before.I will come back here.I alsowant to checkwhat is caus-
ing the lack of development in theentire area,” Madikizela said.Mondi Maqabaza, of Umanyano
Lwabaphulaphuli Initiative, saidthey learnt aboutMgogi’s story aft-
er he called on Umhlobo WeneneFM few years ago.“He called on the radio saying he
has aproblem. We then came tovis-it him. He really needs help,” Maq-abaza said.Madikizela did not give a time
frame for his next visit in the area.Councillor Mangali said it was
true that he had never visitedMgoqi at his shack, but that he hasspoken to himon several occasionsto explain the slow pace of develop-ment in the area.“I would priorities him if there
was a development in his area.I am glad that he met with the
MEC who is heading the Depart-
ment of Human Settlements.I am very aware that he needs a
house, but it is very difficult formeto find him one.He has been staying in the area
for about 20 years now.He thinks we are looking down
on him, which is not the case,”Mangali said.

Drug-crazed man burns houseMANDLA MAHASHE
Drugs are said to be at the centre of adispute that led to an attack on a fami-ly home in Gugulethu by a sibling.
The Mzukwa family of NY22, said theirdrug crazed brother allegedly set theirhomestead alight with no provocation at all.
Fortunately, three minors who wereasleep during the fracas escaped unharmed, but the family has lost everything.
A neighbour came to the rescue of the chil-dren in the nick of time.
According to Nondumiso Mzukwa, 41, thefire was the result of an ongoing family quar-rel with their brother, who wants to moveback into the house.
“He was forced to move out of the housebecause he was a violent drug addict thatturned our lives into a living hell,” she said.
She said that her 43-year-old brother hasbeen addicted to drugs for a long time andhas a history of violence against his siblings.
“Last year, I filed for a protection orderagainst him after he threatened our livesduring a rage. Two weeks ago, he startedcoming back again, demanding to be allowedto live in the house as he was part of the fami-ly.
On Thursday night he arrived here and
started shouting and said that he was goingto spend the night in the house,” said Mzuk-wa.
She said that she decided to go to the policestation as she feared that her brother mightresort to violence again.
At the police station, she said the policetold her that what she had was a preliminaryorder and that it was not an eviction order, and could therefore not chase him out of thehouse, she said.
“I was so disappointed but I decided to goback home.”
On arrival back home, she said she wasshocked to find the house engulfed in flames.
She found neighbours doing all to extin-guish the fire, to no avail.
“The three children survived but we havelost everything, from clothes to documentsand the furniture,” said Mzukwa.
She said that she felt let down by the law.She said that she was disappointed to
learn that the police could do nothing to pro-tect them and that the man was still on therun.
Gugulethu police spokesperson CaptainElliot Sinyangana confirmed that they hadyet to make an arrest.
“We can confirm that a case has been reg-istered and proper investigation is being
conducted before the arrest can be effected. The investigating officer cannot arrest the
suspect yet until his investigation is com-
pleted. The suspect will be brought to book soon,”
said Sinyangana.
When City officials visited the problematic water retention pond they found that some residentswere disposing items on the sewerage system which caused the problems.
Do not throw animals in drainsMANDLA MAHASHE
Residents have been warned against dispos-ing of materials that lead to the blockagesof sewer systems in communities.
This is after residents in Lower Cross-road’s Phase Two complained of sewerageblockage that has been a problem for closeto seven years.
On 16 July, City Vision published an arti-cle in which residents complaining bitterlyabout a water retention pond that was spill-ing sewage into their homes and streets.
They said that the problem was a constantand that they had come to live with it. CityVision contacted the City which promisedto send officials to the area to check thecause of the problem.
Ernest Sonnenberg, mayco member fortransport, said that the problem was causedby sewer blockages.
“In this case, the overflow is ending upin the City’s stormwater retention ponds. These blockages are caused by residents
disposing of inappropriate objects into thesewerage system, in this case an animal car-cass, a mannequin and builders rubblewere found in the manhole,” said Sonnen-berg.
He went on to urge residents to avoiddumping such materials in these systems.
“We ask that residents please refrainfrom disposing any item that may cause ablockage (cooking fats, rags, general litteretc.) in future.
The City is in the process of cleaning thepipeline and removing the blockages, how-ever conditions will worsen again if abuseof the system continues,” said Sonnenberg.
Local Sanco leader Sandile Malgas saidthat they had yet to see any work done atthe pond.
“We have noted that some of officials havebeen sent to assess the area but we have re-ceived no report and have not seen anywork being done.
We will have to wait and see if anythingwill be done,” he said.
Some of the items found includes a dog, a mannequin and builders rubble.

Gospel singer in the industry for the Word rather than moneyXolisa Kwinana from Silversands preachesthe word of God through his music. The 23-year-old gospel singer, who is origi-
nally fromQueenstown in the Eastern Cape, said: “I don’t sing gospel just tomakemoney.
I’m sending God’s message through my mu-sic. I love gospel and lifting people’s spiritsthrough it.“Every song in my album has a meaning
and many people can relate to them.”
He said he began singing gospel when hewas just 16 years old.Xolisa said: “I grewup in church so I real-
ly didn’t know much about the outsideworld. However, I wouldn’t say that grow-ing up in church is the reason I chose tosing gospel. This is a gift from God. Hechose it for me. I feel good when I sing gos-pel. It’s really important to do somethingthat you are passionate about and not whatpeople want you to do.”He said he released his album, titled
Siphila Ngaye earlier this year. He said hewill launch it next month.Xolisa said: “This albumisbasedonwhat
I believe in and what is happening aroundus. I believe we live because of God’s will.I think we are where we are because ofHim.”

Manzo’s netball trio to representMANDLA MAHASHE
Mfuleni’s Manzomthombo Senior Sec-ondary has earned a reputation asone the best netballing teams in the
province and this weekend they are deter-mined to prove this point.
The school’s under 16, 17 and 19 teamswillbe representing the Western Cape at the Na-tional Netball Championships in Boksburg.
They left on Wednesday heading to thetourney which starts tomorrow (Friday 31July). This is the first time that three teamsfrom the school have earned a slot to repre-sent the province at this level.
The under 16s are going into the tourna-ment as champions after clinching the titlelast year. They will however be buoyed bythe presence of their fellow schoolmates inthe competition this year.
According to Coach Frank Xaba this wasexpected as the other two teams have beenknocking on the door.
“Last year, our under 17s and 19s wererunner ups in their divisions and could notmake to the nationals as only the winnersof the divisions progressed. This year we
worked even harder and the results were allthe proof needed,” said Xaba.
The teams went through rigorous compe-tition and won their way out of the regionalcompetition as well as the district competi-tion which meant that they can representthe province alongside other high schoolsnamely Durbanville, Heidevelt, Stellen-bosch and De Kuilen.
The schools represent different leagueswithin schools netball. Xaba said that theywere very confident of their chances in thecompetition.
“We are hoping to do better than last yearas our preparations have showed us that weare currently playing our best netball at themoment.
Leading to this competition we have beenplaying with local schools and teams. Ourunder 16s have proved to be superior to theircounterparts and we are confident that ourother teams will do well,” said Xaba.
Asked what their secret was Xaba wasopen and said that dedication and commit-ment were key in their team’s success.
“As a coach I am very dedicated and verypassionate and that trickles down to the
players andwe have received amazing sup-port from school staff and the parents,”said Xaba.
John Matiso, school principal, sharedthe same sentiments with Xaba regardingthe dedication and the commitment of theteam.
“Our netball team begin training in Jan-uary and even playwith local teams;whichis something that you don’t see in otherschools.
That is the kind of dedication that theyhave. As a result they are among the bestin the country despite the challenges theyfaced,” said Matiso.
He said that one of the biggest challengesthey faced was lack of funding but becauseof their great track record, corporate spon-sors have availed funding for their activi-
ties.“We are very fortunate that through com-
munity leadership that we have Eskom asa sponsor who has made sure that we havea transport and accommodation for the com-petition.
We are hoping that we will do well in thecompetition,” said Matiso.
He said that the target was to have at leasttwo of the teams coming back as champions.
Heurgedcommunities to encourageyouthtoparticipate in the sports aswell as arts andculture activities as a deterrent to drug use.
Under 16 sharp shooter Sisanda Sithongasaid that they we determined to come backtriumphant.
“We have been playing well and we haveshowed our class. We will bring in the tro-phy,” she confidently said.

Derby live at Mzoli’sSPINDOG MOTSAMAI
You can never hide from the Sowetoderby!
For instance, patrons at Mzoli’sPlace will find their taste buds lolling be-tween a sumptous piece of meat and theireyeballs roving on a big screen on Satur-day.
This will be thanks to the live soccer ac-tion brought to them by Mzoli FinancialServices (MFS) in partnership with Voda-com.
MFS director Sisanda Masisi Mangele-Ngcauzela said they would be launchingvarious services from Vodacom includingm-Pesa.
“Patrons must come armed with theirID’s and so that we can rica them. Theystand a chance of winning fabulous prizesand learning more about the m-Pesa pre-paid banking service,” she said.
There will be entertainment galore asMC Tsidi Ndlovu will be doing her thingwith a few talented musicians scouted inVisionland.
Meanwhile Thabo Matlaba will mostlikely miss the Carling Black Label Cupclash against rivals Kaizer Chiefs on Sat-urday, after picking up an injury in Orlan-do Pirates’ 1-0 win over CS Sfaxien in theCAF Confederations Cup.
According to the medical department, theBafana Bafana international has suffered agrade two tear of the hamstring and will re-quire treatment and then rehab.
New signing Gift Motupa, has resumedtraining this week albeit a light session.
Tsidi Ndlovu chats to chesanyama boss, Mzoli.
