When an unexpected COLD front hit Houston in the wee hours before HOLI on Sunday March 24th, the morning setup crew’s NinadGupte texted to headquarters “Hurricane winds here…

tents are fl ying”, Masala Execs Sunil and Sandhya Thakkar, and the Masala team quickly nicknamed the event “Hurricane Holi.” Winds eventually died down in the middle of the event, but even then,

record crowds turned up at Rosenberg’s Seabourne Creek Park to enjoy the 6th annual AAPKA COLORS HOLI 2013.

FRIDAY

Of course it has nothing to do with that hateful day of 9/11 and it is just a vocal resemblance between the two dates i.e. 5/11 and 9/11. But still, it does have something to do with the cruel consequences that had an impact over the political and social structure of Pakistan and par-ticularly the safety and security situ-ation of Pakistan in general.

Incident of 9/11 killed thousands in America, but unbeknownst to the world, it has adversely affected many more; the aftermath of that bloody date has taken a toll of many thousands in many different ways in Pakistan. The world has respond-ed quite appropriately to the 9/11 incidents but the question is, how far or how effectively has the world responded to the situation created in Pakistan as a direct or indirect consequence of 9/11?

No one can deny the fact that internally and externally, Pakistan has suffered and continues to suf-fer since 9/11. Internally, it is shat-tered with political and sectarian harsh differences and brutal riots resulting in bloodshed of innocent lives that are lost in thousands. Ex-ternally, it has lost its respect and has been left with a tarnished im-age. Friends of yesterday are foes of today and allies seem to have become enemies. Isolation from the world community it self is one of the hardest punishment that the people of Pakistan have to bear apparently for no fault of their own. Many may fi nd this criticism too harsh to digest but many more who have seen and have closely witnessed the suffer-ing of people of Pakistan will fi nd this criticism too mild in compari-son. Survival itself is diffi cult.

A few months back when I was in Pakistan for a short visit, I could sense the gravity of the law and or-der situation in Karachi and other parts of the country which was at its lowest mark. Each day at least 10 to 15 fatalities occur in Karachi and elsewhere. Such news in the country is a normal news item in local newspapers and TV channels. Reasons may be varied. It could be a case of political rivalry to sectar-ian differences and from personal enmity to honor killing. I would not

like to go through its painful narra-tion as I have already narrated most of it in one of my earlier articles (re-fer ‘Once upon a time there was a city named Karachi’ issue no 2 of this newspaper).

Economy is yet another sector of grave concern in Pakistan. Cost of living for the common people has sky-rocketed to such an ex-tent that the living or one can say the existence itself has become a day to day problem. People are struggling to fi nd a solution- also on a day to day basis. In other words you can say that common man of Pakistan rises from the bed every

morning with concern of survival for himself and keep his near and dear ones . He will bow down to Allah in Sajda-e- Shukrana if all is well and again the next morning he will go through the same concern. I remember a line from a song; ROZ JEETA HUN ROZ MARTA HUN, JAB TEREY SHAHAR SE GUZARTA HUN sadly but truly peo-ple of Pakistan are left to plan their living and very existence on day to day basis.

Going back to 5/11, since the date has yet to come so I say let’s go back to the prevailing situation and think over the possibilities that may take shape prior to the date – 5/11- the date that is fi xed for hold-ing General Elections in Pakistan.

Naturally everybody is under a spell since the announcement of the date. Excitement and activity is in-creasingly felt each day as the date is nearing. The return of Parwez Musharaf has added much to the existing excitement. Even as I pray for the peaceful transition of power to people I also fear about the pos-sible untoward aftermath. This fear cannot be discarded.

Prior to this, people have wit-nessed elections held under so called free, fair and transparent at-mosphere which has only been so on paper whereas the actual situ-ation is totally different on various

occasions. Allegation and counter allegation of various malpractices, starting from primary campaigning to the actual voting in polling booths is all part of the entire electoral pro-cess. Beyond all that drama, there is the possibility of further extremity of the revengeful reactions! We all have seen that and have suffered grievously from that in the past. We don’t want to go through that agony this time. We only hope and pray that the care taker Government’s machinery will be able to handle the situation effectively.

All of us are aware that all ex-pected political parties, their lead-ers and candidates are and will remain in the fore-front for a long time to come regardless of the ac-

tual outcome of the election. PPP, PML-N, MQM, APML, PTI, JUP, JI and others, they are all in picture. Who will lose, who will win, whose efforts will go fruitless and who will hit the bull’s eye are the questions no body can answer right now. All of them have their own manifesto, their own plans for future. Each one has come out with different agenda. All of them are saying, claiming and promising to work for over all bene-fi t of Pakistan and its people. Many of them are habituated of becom-ing unfaithful to their promises and people have had enough bitter ex-perience of having experienced the

difference between actions and re-actions adopted by various political leaders before and after elections. But for now, what the people of Pa-kistan need to see is that their be-loved country is back on track and to see that Pakistan is once again back on the map of the world in its rightful place. Not only with name and fame but also with dignity and true democracy that actually brings peace and prosperity to its people.

The need of the hour is that what-ever be the outcome of 5/11but it should be effective enough to wipe out all the adversity Pakistan and its people have suffered in the af-termath of bloodshed of 9/11.

NEXT PAGEMUSHARRAF

People keep hearing and reading about fi lms nowadays competing to reach the 100Cr (Indian Rupees) mark and in how many days has it reached that.

Bollywood has been making fi lms for over 100 years and it is also celebrating 100 years of the Indian fi lm industry, so why is it now that the fi lms’ success is now measured by the revenue that it makes?

Previously we have had hit fi lms made by established fi lm makers like Mehboob Khan, Raj Kapoor, Bimal Roy and Guru Dutt to name just a few. The success of all their fi lms and the fi lms made during that era was measured at the box offi ce by the longevity rather than the collections. I remember spe-cial posters being made for fi lms completing 25 weeks – SILVER JUBILEE or 50 weeks – GOLDEN JUBILEE or 75 weeks – PLAT-INUM JUBILEE or 100 weeks – DIAMOND JUBILEE. There were special parties thrown to celebrate these special moments and it was a great feeling when the fi lms would complete these landmarks. Not only were special posters printed but the entire cast and crew received special trophies to mark the occasion.

If we go by the revenue earned then I would like to mention Sholay that made three times the money that Mehboob Khan’s MUGHAL-E-AZAM made and then the fi lm MAINE PYAR KIYA made four times that revenue.

What has impacted the longevity of fi lms? The coming in of TV, Internet and other me-dia and the most crippling factor of PIRACY has hit the longevity of fi lms in the theaters. Hence, nowadays the success of the fi lms is limited to the OPENING DAY and the FIRST THREE DAY response to the fi lm and rev-enue generated during that period. This method of measuring the success of a fi lm has attracted a lot of criticism from various fi lm critics and the senior members of the Film Industry.

Since the year 2008 fi lms have been crossing the 1 Billion Rupee mark consis-tently with the fi rst being GHAJNI and then there has been no looking back. Also in the years that have gone by we have seen a lot of sequels of the fi lms that have been highly successful like DHOOM and GOLMAAL and so far these have made more money than their originals. Not only are they making se-quels of the fi lms that have been recently successful but now there is a fl ood of fi lms that were yesteryear hits like DON, GOL-MAAL (Faroque Sheikh), ZANJEER, HIM-MATWALA to name a few.

Let’s look at THE HIGHEST GROSSER OF FILMS WORLDWIDE:

Given below are some of the highest grosser’s of recent times – these are includ-ing the versions that are dubbed in other languages apart from their original Hindi versions.

There have been about 36 fi lms that have reached the 100 cr mark since the year 2006, however in the recent past; suddenly we have seen a fl ood of these.

Also, there are a host of other reasons that have caused the sudden spurt in the revenue earnings of the fi lms. The number of prints and the number of theaters that the fi lms are released at has increased tre-mendously. Any new fi lm with a major star cast has about 2500 to 3000 prints released worldwide, so also the release of fi lms in the interior parts of India has increased widely. Marketing the fi lm has reached a new high. Lot of publicity stunts are done by various proms being released from time to time, the Stars make appearances at various TV shows and Award Nites in order to promote the fi lm.

So does it mean that the fi lms that do not touch the 100 cr mark are bad fi lms ??? or the public did not like them ??? Let’s not go very far back – lets talk about the fi lms that have been released in the recent past and have not touched the 100 cr mark but have been successful with the audiences and also won quite a number of awards.

Among them would be fi lms like – PAAN SINGH TOMAR, KAHANI, GANGS OF WASSEYPUR, BAND BAAJA BAARAT and the latest being JOLLY LLB. All these fi lms have been very successful at the box offi ce but have not touched the 100 cr mark, they have won awards in several departments so would you say that these are not successful fi lms ???

So now comes the question – HOW DOES ONE JUDGE THE SUCCESS OF THE FILM – SHOULD IT BE BY THE MON-EY IT COLLECTS?? OR BY NUMBER OF AWARDS IT COLLECTS ?? OR BY THE APPLAUSE OF THE AUDIENCE??

Well you are the JANTA – you are the people who collectively make or break a fi lm when it is released every Friday. We would like you all, our readers, to respond to this question, you can email us your thoughts/answers on the above article, we look for-ward to hear from you all soon.

Till next time enjoy the movies and

STOP PIRACY.

KARACHI - Former president and army chief Pervez Musharraf on Sunday ended nearly four years of self-exile by fl ying to Karachi despite death threats, and said he would face all challenges that lay ahead.

Musharraf landed at Jinnah Inter-national Airport via a chartered Emir-ates fl ight from Dubai.

Talking to reporters inside the air-craft, a smiling Musharraf said, “It is a very emotional moment. I’m going back after four years.”

“There are security challenges, legal challenges and political chal-lenges but I will face them,” said Musharraf, clad in a white shalwar kameez, as he made his way out of the aircraft.

“I am feeling concerned about the unknown... there are a lot of un-known factors of terrorism and ex-tremism, unknown factors of legal issues, of how I will be perform (in the elections),” he said.

A TV channel reported that mili-tary authorities, through the Defence Ministry, had sent a letter to the Inte-rior Ministry to provide security to the former president.

Musharraf’s planned press con-ference at the airport was cancelled and would be held later in the week in Islamabad.

Security and party offi cials con-fi rmed that the former president had,

after consultations with his All Paki-stan Muslim League (APML) exec-utive members inside the terminal, decided to hold a press conference in Punjab on Wednesday.

“Security offi cials advised Musharraf after his arrival that he should not hold a press conference, neither try to address a rally because they wanted to take him from the air-port to his destination as soon, and as discreetly as possible due to high security risks,” a party member said.

He is expected to stay in Karachi for two days before going to Islam-abad.

Security at the airport was tight in the wake of threats to Musharraf’s life from the Pakistani Taliban.

Hundreds of police and paramili-tary offi cials were present inside and outside the airport to provide securi-ty cover to the former president.

Sniffer dogs and scanners were used to check all incoming and out-going vehicles and people at the air-port.

Hours before his return, author-ities in Karachi cancelled permis-sion for a meeting that was to be addressed by Musharraf at a ground near the mausoleum of Mohammad Ali Jinnah.

Sindh Police spokesman SSP Im-ran Shaukat said the no-objection certifi cate for the public meeting

to be addressed by Musharraf had been withdrawn due to “serious se-curity threats” to the former presi-dent.

The police had offi cially informed Musharraf’s party, the APML, about the decision, he said.

“The APML has agreed to cancel the public meeting,” he added.

Addressing the crowd which had gathered to welcome him at the air-port, Musharraf said he had come to Pakistan as promised, despite all threats. He said he was not afraid of anyone except the Almighty. He said he was a practicing Muslim, like many others and rejected all judge-ments over his character.

The former president said the Pa-kistan that he had left four years ago had disappeared, adding that it hurt him to witness poverty, unemploy-ment and lawlessness in the coun-try where the masses were being crushed.

He claimed he came back for the masses and will give them the Paki-stan he had left behind. He appealed to the people of Karachi to help re-store peace to the city of lights.

Musharraf said he would hold ral-lies all over the country and try to garner as much political support as possible for the upcoming elections.

ISLAMABAD: Pres-ident Asif Ali Zardri has welcomed the nomination of Justice Mir Hazar Khan Khoso as the caretaker Prime Minister by the Election Commission of Pakistan today.

Senator Farhatullah Babar quoted the President as saying that the nomi-nation of Mir Hazar Khan Khoso by the ECP was a culmination of a part of the constitutional process to ensure free and fair elec-tions and will be welcomed by all across the political divide.

The President said that the forthcoming general elections under a caretak-er neutral set up selected under the constitutional process and an indepen-dent and empowered election Commission duly empowered by the Parlia-ment for the fi rst time in the country’s history was a very signifi cant and welcome de-velopment that should help in banishing the specter of manipulate power transfer.

The President also asked the people to exercise their right to vote and elect their representatives who best represented their hopes, aspirations and priorities.

KHOSOThe Election

Commission of Pakistan (ECP) on Sunday appointed

Mir Hazar Khan Khoso, a retired judge, as

caretaker prime minister of

Pakistan

ISLAMABAD - Khoso belongs to Jaffarabad district of Baloch-istan and would take oath of his offi ce today (Monday) at 1300 hours from President Asif Ali Zardari.

The former judge enjoys good reputation for his honesty as there are no corruption charges against him, though opposition parties consider him loyal to the Pakistan People’s Party and criticised him for taking oath under the PCO during the tenure of former president General Zaiul Haq. “We reviewed profi les of all names forwarded by parlia-mentary committee in detail and fi nally picked Justice (r) Khoso for the slot of caretaker prime minister,” Chief Election Commis-sion Fakhruddin G Ebrahim told reporters while announcing the

caretaker PM’s name.Khoso’s name was proposed

by the Pakistan People’s Party. The CEC said fi ve-member commission appointed Mir Hazar Khan Khoso as prime minister with majority of votes, as only member from Punjab Justice (r) Riaz Kiyani opposed the same, as he was in favour of opposition nominee Justice (r) Nasir Aslam Zahid.

Khoso, 84, graduated from University of Sindh in 1954 and passed LLB in 1956 from Karachi University. Later in 1977, he was appointed additional judge of the Balochistan High Court and was then given a permanent seat in 1987. He served as Balochistan High Court chief justice for two years from December 1989 to September 1991. He also served

as the chief judge of Federal Shariat Court. Khoso undertook his last political assignment back in 1991, when he served as the acting governor of Balochistan for three months.

On Sunday, the second day of deliberations of the Election Commission, the commission gave verdict in favour of Justice (r) Khoso.

The commission reviewed profi les of all four nominees- two each from the former PPP gov-ernment and the opposition.

The government had proposed the names of former State Bank governor Dr Ishrat Hussain and Mir Hazar Khan Khoso, while the opposition suggested the names of Justice (r) Nasir Aslam Zahid and Sindhi nationalist leader Rasul Bakhsh Palejo for the slot

of caretaker prime minister. The matter of appointment of care-taker prime minister was referred to the ECP on Friday night after the prime minister and leader of the opposition as well as the parliamentary committee failed to achieve consensus. Before his appointment as the country’s chief executive, Khoso was serv-ing as the chairman of Baloch-istan Zakat Council.

The PPP connection: Critics al-lege that Khoso always remained aligned with the PPP. Citing Khoso’s last job, they said he was given a lucrative job of the PPP government in 2009 when the PPP gave him the chairman-ship of a commission formed to reinstate all employees who had been appointed by various PPP governments period 1993

to 1996, but were later sacked by successive government of the PML-N. It is said that hundreds of people were reinstated without proper scrutiny or merit.

Maiden media briefi ng: In the briefi ng after his nomination as prime minister, prime minis-ter-elect Khoso said there was no question of delaying the polls.

To a question on the possible situation in which election had to be postponed, he said: “Let me make it clear that elections will be held on time, so the question of delaying elections makes no sense,” he said. Khoso said his top priority was to hold free, fair and transparent elections. He said he would extend his full support to the ECP. To a query, he said his cabinet would com-prise 10 to 12 ministers. He said, “Holding election, law and order and economic condition are the major challenges before me.”

To another question regarding the deteriorating law and order in the country, he said maintaining law and order was a provincial subject, but he would provide full support to provinces in this regard.

Khoso added that he would soon hold a meeting with provin-cial chief executives.

Surprising many, the newly-ap-pointed prime minister said that he did not the know names of provincial governors, except that of Balochistan Governor Nawa-bazada Zulfi qar Magsi. The name of the caretaker prime minister was decided in the second ECP sitting on Sunday, as the previ-ous deliberations on Saturday had ended indecisively owing to the absence of Sindh member Justice (r) Muhammad Roshan.

President Asif Ali Zardri wel-comed the nomination of Justice (r) Khoso as the caretaker prime minister. He said the nomination of Khoso was a culmination of a part of the constitutional process to ensure free and fair elections and would be welcomed by all across the political divide.

PTI, JI form committees for seat-adjustment across the countryLAHORE: Pakistan Teh-

reek-e-Insaf (PTI) and Ja-maat-e-Islami (JI) on Sunday formed committee to formulise seat-adjutsment formula between both the parties in the four prov-inces. A delegation headed by Chief Syed Munawar Hasan visit-

ed the residence of PTI chairman Imran Khan and discussed with him a well-thought-out strategy to formulise the seat adjustment formula between two parties for the forthcoming general elections.

The PTI Chairman welcoming JI delegation told reporters that

they had thoroughly discussed the seat-adjust and other issues relating to upcoming polls.

Talking to media represen-tatives following their meeting, Imran Khan and Syed Hasan announced that both the parties would name committees to work

out seat adjustments.Imran Khan said on the oc-

casion that PTI would not forge alliance or seat adjustment with parties which were in power for the last fi ve years, vowing that the PTI tsunami would sweep away all the corrupt forces.

PM-headed panel for CAG selection mootedEminent retired bureaucrats

and members of the Forum of Retired Offi cers of Indian Audit and Accounts Service have demanded the creation of a selection committee headed by Prime Minister to select the new Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) of India. The term of cur-rent CAG Vinod Rai ends in May.

In a memorandum to Pres-ident Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, they have argued that need of the hour was a “trans-parent, institutionalised selection mechanism” for the appointment of the next CAG.

They have contended that when such a committee proce-dure had been adopted for the selection of the Chief Vigilance Commissioner and the Nation-al Human Rights Commission Chairman, the same procedure should be applied for the selec-tion of the CAG.

The proposed selection committee should comprise the

Finance Minister, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, the Lok Sabha Speaker, the PAC Chairman and, possibly, the Chief Justice of India or other eminent legal luminary.

The signatories to the mem-orandum included the former deputy CAGs, J.N. Gupta, B.P. Mathur, R. Parameswar; and the former Secretary Ministry of Water Resources, Ramaswmy R. Iyer. The former bureaucrats did not favour the current crite-ria, which selected only those who had served as Secretary for the CAG post. They strongly recommended selecting deserv-ing Deputy CAGs who had vast knowledge and experience of government accounts and audit.

“In fact, according to the Forum, the practice of selecting only those who had served as Secretaries is open to question, as apart from the fact that most Secretaries are unlikely to have the in-depth knowledge needed for the position of CAG, it could

be argued that a background as a Secretary to the Government of India is very likely to lead to questions of confl ict of interest, as the CAG may fi nd himself or herself having to audit decisions taken by him or her earlier in the capacity of Secretary. It may be recalled that a question of pos-sible confl ict of interest did arise recently in the case of the CVC,” the memorandum said.

Copies of the memorandum have been submitted to the Leaders of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, Chairman of the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), the Lok Sabha Speaker and a few MPs.

The former offi cials further stressed that the selection of the CAG should be unanimous and not by the majority principle on the plea that the rationale of a broad-based selection commit-tee would be negated if the gov-ernment retained a majority in the committee and the majority view prevailed.

Anna Hazare to address 8 rallies in PunjabCHANDIGARH: Anti-cor-

ruption crusader and social activist Anna Hazare will address eight public rallies in Punjab during his fi ve day 'Janatantra Yatra' beginning March 30 from Amritsar.

Gurdeep Singh, a spokes-person of the Janatantra Morcha said today that Anna Hazare would start fi rst phase of his Yatra from Amritsar after paying obeisance at Durgiana Mandir, Harmandir Saheb and Ramtirath temple.

He will address fi rst public rally at the Jallianwalan Bagh on March 31 followed by two more public rallies to be held at Kapurthala and Jalandhar on the same day.

Sanjay Dutt not to seek pardon, will surrender in timeSanjay Dutt, who has been

ordered by the Supreme Court to return to jail to complete a fi ve year sentence in the 1993 Mumbai blasts case, on Thursday said he has not sought any pardon and will surrender in time.

Amid a growing clamour for his clemency, the 53-year-old Bolly-wood actor said, “All I can tell you is I have not applied for pardon.”

“There are many other people who deserve pardon. I want to tell with folded hands to the media, the honourable citizens of the country that when I am not going for pardon then there can be no debate about it,” said Mr. Dutt, who broke down during his inter-action with the press in Mumbai. The actor, who has been handed down fi ve years imprisonment by the Supreme Court in the 1993

Mumbai serial blasts case, said he had the highest respect for the apex court and will abide by all terms and conditions put forth by it.

“The honourable Supreme Court has given me time to surrender and I will surrender in that time,” he said as sister and MP Priya Dutt comforted him.

As Mr. Dutt has already served 18 months in jail, he would have to undergo the imprisonment for three-and-a-half-years.

The apex court has given him four-week time to surrender.

“I am shattered and this is the tough time in my life. With folded hands I request the media and citi-zens let me be at peace,” he said.

Several noted personalities including Press Council of India Chairman Markandey Katju and

actor-turned-politicians Jaya Bach-chan and Shatrughan Sinha had sought pardon for Mr. Sanjay Dutt.

When pointed out that Mr. Dutt will not seek clemency, Mr. Katju, however, said that he will go ahead and apply for his pardon.

“There are very, very tough times in my life and in our lives. I want to thank everybody who supported us and me. I just want to tell everyone from the media that I have got very few days left and I want to fi nish all my work. I also have to spend time with my family,” Mr. Dutt said.

Today is the fi rst time that Mr. Dutt has ventured out of his house in suburban Bandra since the Su-preme Court verdict. He made the remarks before leaving for a shoot.

“I love my country and its citi-zens. I love India,” he said.

A moderate earthquake has rattled Trinidad & To-bago, causing some alarm but no reported damage or injuries.

The US Geological Sur-vey says the magnitude-4.8 quake struck early Sunday and was centred some 81 kilometres northeast of Roxborough, an eastern town on the tourism-depen-dent island of Tobago. It was also felt on the Carib-bean country of Barbados.

Its epicentre was about 46 kilometres below the surface.

President Thein Sein declared a state of emergency in the region on Friday and deployed army troops to the worst hit city, Meikhti-la. But even as soldiers were able to impose order there after several days of anarchy that saw armed Buddhists torch the city’s Muslim quarters, unrest was reported in two other towns to the south.

Late Sunday, state television said that mobs burned down a mosque and 50 homes on Saturday in Yamethin, about 64 kilometres from Meikhtila, and another mosque and several build-ings were also set ablaze in Lewei, further south near the capital, Naypyitaw.

The government has put the to-tal death toll at 32, and authorities say they have detained at least 35 people allegedly involved in arson and violence in the region.

The spread of violence is posing major challenged to stability as Thein Sein’s administration.

Two similar episodes rocked western Rakhine state last year, pitting ethnic Rakhine Buddhists against Rohingya Muslims who are widely denigrated as illegal migrants from Bangladesh and are denied passports as a result. The Muslim population of central Myanmar, by contrast, is mostly of Indian origin and does not face the same questions over nationality.

Analysts say the emergence of sectarian conflict here is a worrying development, one that indicates violent anti-Muslim sen-

timent has spread unabated into the country’s heartland. Muslims make up about four per cent of the predominantly Buddhist country’s roughly 60 million people.

The bloodshed “shows that inter-communal tensions in Myanmar are not just limited to the Rakhine and Rohingya in northern Rakhine state,” said Jim Della-Gi-acoma of the International Crisis Group. “Myanmar is a country with dozens of localized fault lines and grievances that were papered over during the authoritarian years that we are just beginning to see and understand. It is a paradox of transitions that greater freedom does allows these local conflicts to resurface.”

“If a democratic state is the nation’s goal, they need to find a place for all its people as equal citizens,” Della-Mr. Giacoma said. “Given the country’s history, it won’t be easy.”

On Sunday, Vijay Nambiar, the U.N. secretary-general’s spe-cial adviser on Myanmar, toured Meikhtila and called on the govern-ment to punish those responsible.

Mr. Nambiar said he was encouraged to learn that some in-dividuals in both communities had bravely helped each other and that religious leaders were now advo-cating peace. He said the people he spoke to believe the violence “was the work of outsiders,” but he gave no details.

“There is a certain degree of fear and anxiety among the

people, but there is no hatred,” Mr. Nambiar said after visiting both groups on Sunday and promising the United Nations would provide as much help as it can to get the city back on its feet. “They feel a sense of community and that it is a very good thing because they have worked together and lived together.”

But he added — “It is important to catch the perpetrators. It is important that they be caught and punished.”

In Meikthila, at least five mosques were set ablaze from Wednesday to Friday. The majority of homes and shops burned in the city also belonged to Muslims, and most of the displaced are Muslim. Dozens of corpses were piled in the streets, some of them charred beyond recognition.

During his trip, Mr. Nambiar visited some of the thousands of Muslim residents at a city stadium, where they have huddled since fleeing their homes. He later visit-ed around 100 Buddhists at a local monastery who have also been displaced.

“The city is calm and some shops have reopened, but many still live in fear. Some still dare not return to their homes,” said Win Htein, an opposition lawmaker from the city.

Myanma Ahlin, a state-run newspaper, carried a statement from Buddhist, Muslim, Christian and Hindu leaders expressing sor-row for the loss of life and property

and calling on Buddhist monks to help ease tensions.

“We would like to call upon the government to provide suffi-cient security and to protect the displaced people and to investi-gate and take legal measures as urgently as possible,” the state-ment from the Interfaith Friendship Organization said.

Muslims, who make up about 30 per cent of Meikhtila’s 100,000 inhabitants, have stayed off the streets since their shops and homes were burned and Buddhist mobs armed with machetes and swords began roaming the city.

Little appeared to be left of some palm tree-lined neighbour-hoods, where the legs of victims could be seen poking out from smouldering masses of twisted debris and ash. Broken glass, charred cars and motorcycles and overturned tables littered roads beside rows of burned-out homes and shops, evidence of the wide-spread chaos that swept the town.

Chaos began Wednesday after an argument broke out between a Muslim gold shop owner and his Buddhist customers. Once news spread that a Muslim man had killed a Buddhist monk, Buddhist mobs rampaged through a Muslim neighbourhood and the situation quickly spiralled out of control.

Residents and activists said the police did little to stop the rioters or reacted too slowly, allowing the violence to escalate.

Buddhists-Muslims violence spreads in Myanmar

Sectarian clashes between Buddhists and Muslims in Myanmar spread to at least two other towns in the coun-try’s heartland over the weekend, under-mining government efforts to quash an eruption of violence that has killed doz-ens of people and displaced 10,000 more.

Cyprus secures bailout, avoids bankruptcy

Cyprus secured a package of rescue loans in tense, last-ditch negoti-ations early Monday, two EU diplomats said, saving the country from a bank-ing system collapse and bankruptcy.

The cash-strapped island nation needs a 10 billion euro bailout ($13 billion) to recapitalize its ailing banks and keep the government afloat. The European Cen-

tral Bank had threatened to cut crucial emergency assistance to the country’s banks by Tuesday without an agreement.

The finance ministers of the 17-nation eurozone accepted the plan reached in 10 hours of negotiations, the diplomats said. They spoke on condition of ano-nymity pending the official announcement.

Under the plan, Cyprus’ second-largest bank, Laiki, will be restructured and holders of bank deposits of more than 100,000 euros will have to take losses.

A jigsaw puzzle can be said to be correctly solved only when all the pieces are put into their right places; howev-er when you set out to put the puzzle together, you have no idea where to begin. One usu-ally begins blindly, starting out on assumptions. An EVENT MANAGER would also start out like that, feeling his way around through trial and error, learning all the time. Every event being a lesson in itself. Hats off to Re-han Siddiqi who has the cour-age to organize events on such a large scale, one after the oth-er. Audiences will not forget the wonderful experience they’ve enjoyed.

The main singer, is consid-ered the ‘jewel in the crown, the ‘abhushan’; the analogy was brought to life as one ex-perienced ADNAN SAMI in all his glory at the just concluded concert at the Arena Theatre, Houston. Alone in the lime-light (literally) he kept the crowd of over 20,000 mesmerized. The cheering audience, that couldn’t have enough of him, created a magical evening on Saturday, the 23rd of March. REHAN SID-

DIQI was successful in luring Adnan back to Houston after a long gap of eight years, - it was in 2005 that he was last here. Referring to Rehaan’s cajoling to come perform here, Adnan called it the ‘Big Guy Refer-ence’. It was a good show: en-tertaining, enthralling, enticing, exciting…

Adnan lived up to the prom-ise he made to the audience of singing all requested songs, he filled each one’s heart with a sense of fulfillment. One can hear recordings of their favor-ite songs as many times as one wishes, however it is a different feeling altogether to hear the original singer sing it LIVE FOR YOU. Performing on stage, Adnan sounds just as he does on his records; the purity of the sound, the energy of his personality, the accompanying music, everything put together, it was an experience, a mem-ory that one would treasure all of one’s life. There’s something extra special that he brings into each show that is completely different, completely original and that’s what makes attend-ing his concerts so special. It’s

like a dance that he and the au-dience are performing togeth-er, keeping step, creating the special intimacy and fully losing themselves into each other. Be-ing his own pianist he can offer that something special. He also enjoys writing his own lyrics and composing his own music, thus he loses himself completely into all aspects of the song.

The ongoing interaction that he had with his audience kept both the artists and the audi-ence fully engaged in the mo-ment. Expounding upon his life’s journey, from being fat as fat can be, to a slim, handsome, healthy, vibrant personality that he is now, Adnan joked, “I alone was a group photograph; it was a nightmare, I couldn't find my size clothes that I could buy. My family had to have a tailor come over to measure me, who made fun of me. Though it was in good spirit, it hurt. In fact, Doc-tors told me that if I did not lose weight, I may lose my life. It was really hard on me, so at one time I said to myself, ‘enough is enough’.” Reiterating his faith in the almighty which then helps one to have faith in one’s own

efforts, Adnan continued, “If you truly want to do something then look up and ask God: he truly gives you answers”. That com-ment brought tears to many eyes amongst the audience. Adnan gives the credit of losing 300 lbs to the encouragement from his audience. They ap-preciated his slimmer look and encouraged him to continue to lose weight. In all seriousness, Adnan took a dig at the soda manufacturers, because at one time, he just drank soda all the time (that’s how he added all the empty calories to his ever thickening frame). He said, “Water has zero calories, thank God for WATER.” That’s all he drinks now.

Adnan’s love and respect for his band was obvious through-out the show; he knows that their flexibility and adaptability allow him to be responsive to the audience’s moods. He intro-duced each member of his band and allowed them to demon-strate the music that their par-ticular instrument creates. The audience was in raptures. All in all, a memorable evening.

NEXT PAGERAHAT FATEH ALI KHAN

Over our last issue and this one, the readers have got to know much about the just concluded holi festivities.; The last issue had a two page write-up and photos, captioned ‘Sunil T-Host Holi Houston’,whilethis one has RECORD CROWDS @ “HURRICANE” HOLI!

It’s time to get to know the hosts better: SUNIL AND SANDHYA THAKKAR. Con-trary to expectations, Sunil is the heart of the business taking care of the stage, the performances and the actual hosting whilst Sandhya is the ‘behind the scene’ brain who looks into the logistics, the finances and the operations. He is the ‘yin’ while she is the ‘yang’ and together they make the Masala Radio and Entertainment Com-pany complete.

Married for over 20 years, they have together created this company. When Sunil moved from Mumbai, India to Houston as a young student, to start his undergrad at University of Houston, he was a totally different person. He was just an aver-age student, shy, reclusive, and gawky with a persistent stammer. A late entrant into the family, (his older brother was 17 years older to him); he lost his father soon after his birth. He was raised entirely mostly by his mother as the older brother had left to make his own life in the US. Insecure, belligerent, often angry at his hapless state, Sunil often let out his anger and frustration by hitting the ball hard that it broke many windows down the streets where he played cricket with his friends.

Houston transformed him; he grew taller, his stammer left him, but most importantly, he was able to give up his ‘victim

mentality’. He calls it, ‘The Divine Interven-tion’. It came at just the right time in his life; as he started out in school in Hous-ton. He loved to dance and since he had almost grown up on the streets of Mumbai, he was able to lose his inhibitions quickly enough. He did Mechanical Engineering from UH and after his marriage went on to do his MBA from the prestigious Rice University. Giving up a secure job to jump full time into the entertainment industry is not for the chicken hearted. Sunil gives the credit for this move to his wife Sandhya who egged him on to pursue his passion full time.

For Sunil, God is most definitely a SHE. He has experienced

the majesty, the power, the magnanimity, the glory, (and he could go on and on) in the two most powerful wom-

en’s influence in his life – his

mother and

his wife. He says that he never missed his dad because he had never ever experi-enced a dad to start with and he never missed what he never had. However, he is eternally grateful for what he did have in his life, the two women whom he simply adores. Every morning he starts out his day by offering personal prayers, putting a tilak on his forehead, then heading straight to his mom, whose feet he touches, has the breakfast that she makes for him. On the business front, he gives the credit of his success to his wife, Sandhya. He depends upon her, he heeds her advice, he looks up to her and he lets her run the whole behind the scenes show. He says, “She is the best thing that has happened to me in my life”. He then focuses on what he is good at i.e. being a showman.

His purpose in life dawned on him like a revelation. He has made a business out of wanting to bring JOY THROUGH LAUGH-TER into the lives of all the people around him. It may appear like he is playing around but he is not. All his business as

well as social initiatives is about helping people lighten up, about helping them live in the mo-ment. Live, Love, Laugh, that’s his message. He was very insight-ful when he said that happiness is relative - the joy that Sharukh Khan experiences when his movie is released is com-parable to the joy a rickshaw driver feels when he purchases his own rickshaw. Thus, the important thing for

each one of us is to find that joy, relish it, live it fully and

not underestimate its value. For Sunil, life is about seeking out the positive in every situation; he says it’s a habit that we have to cultivate. It’s the lazy mind that looks for lacks and gaps. The trained mind looks for what’s good, worth appreciating, and then articulates that in the best language possible. Our thoughts and the language in which we express our thoughts shape us, hence he advises everyone to seek out the positive in everything.

Being an ADDICT FOR EXCITEMENT, he is always on the lookout for creating the next big event that will attract hordes of people, all with the objective of creat-ing positive energy, bonding and building bridges amongst the various participating come to enjoy. That is the couple’s basic intention -to uphold our traditional culture through fun with a purpose. Holi and Diwali are the two occasions that they have been successful at creating annual events. The Diwali celebration will once again be at an open air stadium in the late evening with a focus on bringing alive the religious fervor of the victory of the good over the evil. Last year during the Diwali celebration at the Skeeter’s stadium in Sugar Land, they had the MahaAarti (the great prayer)., Diyas were handed out to the audience so everybody could engage at a personal level in the strengthening of the intention to fight evil. Sunil and Sandhya feel the satisfaction of contributing to upholding our cultural traditions and passing these on to the forthcoming generations. Sandhya’s message to the readers is to just come out to participate. They are striving to bring all the fun and festivities at a minimal cost to the public, so the least the people can do is to make the effort to come, participate and add to the energy.

I felt the power that a couple can bring forward into the world when they are aligned in their vision of life. Here’s wishing them both many more years of powerful contribution to the community and country of their residence, the great United States of America.

THE YOUNG TURK

REHAN, By: Nargis Lakhani

March 23rd, 29th and April 20th and 27th; these are culturally im-portant dates for Houstonians. Rehan Siddiqi of HumTum Radio is all set to offer unforgettable memories to the South Asian com-munity of Greater Houston. Great artists from the musical world of South Asia are being brought across the globe, not only to en-tertain but to keep alive a piece of our cultural heritage.

My fi rst impression on meeting Rehan was the feeling of being en-veloped in positive energy; in fact the premises of HumTum Radio seemed to hum with a feeling of excitement and enthusiasm. The momentum that is being built up seems to be enveloping the south Asian community in the city. You tune into the AM radio channels, you may be driving across the city and you view these huge bill boards with the photos of Adnan Sami or Rahat Fatehali Khan, you leaf through the local newspapers, every media platform has been used to promote these upcoming events. Rehan shared that he has discovered the key to organizing successful events – a combina-tion of the right artists, best mar-keting and the most memorable experience for the people who

come to these shows. The 24/7 contact that the radio has with the local community gives him a good insight about what the community likes and also what it dislikes. He uses this information to his advan-tage when planning for events.

The people of Houston can look forward to great entertainment at these upcoming shows. Alongside enjoying great soul stirring live fu-sion of traditional and modern mu-sic and singing, you will be treated to a royal welcome with roses and then some fi reworks. For Rehan, events are about creating happi-ness, bringing smiles of satisfac-tion on the face of the artists as well as the audience. “I want to give everybody a TREAT at my events”, says Rehan.

“What is the source of your en-ergy?” I asked. He refl ected for a while and then shared some-thing very profound. I think even he seemed to be touched by his own refl ection. He said, “You may do everything that is required of you for ensuring success in your life, yet it is the family environment that deeply impacts you. The sup-port, encouragement and motiva-tion that I receive from my family members makes me feel confi -dent and keep me happy.” Wise words indeed!

His career in the entertainment industry goes back many years. As a young boy of fourteen, he had hosted an event as a DJ for a gathering of 250 people; slowly and steadily, he has been chart-ing his way. Living in the west, he has an opportunity to learn ‘Best Practices’ from the Western En-tertainment Industry. ‘PERFEC-TION’, that’s his goal in everything he does. He throws himself com-pletely into everything he under-takes in his life and then pulls out all stops and keeps going till he feels completely satisfi ed within his own heart.

It is no small feat to have the great names in the entertainment industry insist on coming back to do shows with the same promoter, Rehan in this case, over and over again. Once an artist comes un-der Rehan’s banner, they choose to come back exclusively with him, Rehan was the fi rst promoter in the country who brought over 8000 people for Rahat in 2011

and over 8000 for Sonu Nigam in 2007 he did back to back sold out events for Rahat in 2010 and pan-kaj udhas in 2012. Pankaj Udhas said that Rehan is the most amaz-ing promoter he has ever toured with and will only come back with his banner. Rehan also brought the fi rst big South Asian event at Sugarland stadium with its capac-ity for 8000 people, but actual numbers who attended the show was 10,000. Many more wanted to come but could not get in as tick-ets were all sold out. Rehan Sid-diqi is the most refi ned promoter, his shows have class and when shows have his name, there is a guarantee that these will be sold out events in Houston even if they are back to back.

Rehan believes in supporting the good work being done by oth-er organizations as well. When River Stone, in Fort Bend County, conducted a poll, wherein the res-idents had to vote for their favorite of the fi ve celebrities living in the

area, Rehaan was the winner. The award of $5000 that he won was given to the Fort Bend Education Foundation.

It was indeed a treat to meet somebody who has made his way up in this part of the world, facing the same challenges that all of us have. Rehan is all praise for City360 Houston’s managing part-ner, Mr. Saqib Rana, for launching this newspaper. He is a great fan of Saqib’s art work and is confi -dent that the people of Houston are in for a visual treat.

We wish Rehan all the very best for all his future ventures. ‘A Big Star Show’, most defi nitely in 2013, that’s what he is working on bringing to the people of Houston.

This paper acknowledges Rehaan's contribution to Houstonians and to match the occasion of his efforts

to bring so many concerts back to back into the city, we are reprinting the article we have done on him in

our edition 1 vol 1.

Shahrukh-Priyanka’s alleged relationship is a hot and spicy topic of discussion in B-town. While some say Ms Chopra is simply using SRK’s name to climb the success ladder, others are busy sympathizing with Gauri Khan. One of the most ridiculous rumor that was doing rounds recently was, the alleged couple have secretly tied the knot. OMG! We wonder how Gauri must have digested it. Anyway, now it seems like the fi rst lady of Bollywood – Gauri Khan is coping up with the entire PC-SRK episode.

Early last year, buzz was that Shahrukh Khan was giving spe-cial treatment to PeeCee, over other actresses. Apparently, the actor was recommending her to producers, etc. At that time, Gauri chose to ignore the controversy, tagging it as a mere professional relationship. But slowly, PC be-came a regular visitor at Mannat (That’s where SRK and Gauri reside), making casual visits and attending house parties.

Back then, the slightly insecure Gauri did make efforts to extend PC a warm hand.

According to a source, “Shah Rukh had kept a party for a select few at Mannat after his return from Berlin from the Don 2 schedule. Priyanka was invited as well. She turned up late, and surprisingly spent most of the time chatting with Gauri. Every one including KJo was stumped with this new bonding.” Interest-ingly, Gauri also asked her close friends to shut up when they warned her of Priyanka’s ways. Soon Shahrukh-Priyanka started hosting award shows together, travelling for fi lm festivals and

even trying to get themselves brand endorsements as a pair. This behavior of the two started to add fuel to the fi re and Gauri started to have mood swings. Says a source, “There were days when she would roam around the house wearing dark glasses and

only come out to see her kids off to school. She wasn’t taking it too well and it was quite apparent. The only support she had during this time was her BFF Sussane Roshan who perhaps took a leaf out of her own book (Hrithik’s torrid affair with Barbara Mori)

offering solace to her friend.”Matters worsened when Pee-

Cee stopped getting invited to parties, but would later be invited on SRK’s request. Even Karan Johar, who was then at logger-heads with Priyanka, had to swal-low his pride and invite Priyanka Chopra to his birthday bash.

An eye witness who attended the bash reveals, “Shah Rukh played the perfect host for Priyan-ka. The moment she walked in, he jumped over the couch, received her with a kiss on her cheek and went around introducing her to everyone in the room. All this hap-pened in front of Gauri who was left standing in a corner clutching her glass of a non alcoholic drink. After returning home, the couple had a huge show down where the two gave each other ultimatums. Gauri was clear that she didn’t want her husband working with Priyanka. Shah Rukh on the other hand brushed the warning off and continued to court Chopra.” Realizing that her negativity was spoiling things even more, Gauri fi nally decided to let go of the situation. It was pretty obvious at a recent event when Gauri made a solo appearance, dressed to kill. She was seen talking to almost everyone at the party, fl ashing (or may be faking) a big broad smile. An insider revealed, “Gauri feels like a new person. She has turned to reading, meditation, taken a spiritual path. Her insecurity about losing her husband is nowhere to be seen and those who have met her recently only talk about how she is glowing and radiating happiness.” Whatever be the case, we truly wish the best for the Khan khandaan.

Salman Khan

Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan’s little baby Aardhya Bachchan is growing up very fast. Not just her height, but little Aarad-hya’s mind is pretty sharp for her age too. She is only 16 months old but is a quick learner.

Apparently, mommy Aish-warya Rai is busy giving her baby some home education. Recently, the actress was over heard telling her friends that her daughter can now recite the famous ‘Gayatri Mantra’ fl uently.

At a recent event, a source was quoted as telling a tab-loid, “Aaradhya can not only recite numbers from 1-10 and alphabet from A-Z, she has learnt to say the whole Gayatri Mantra as well.”

Just to recollect, actor Abhishek Bachchan had said in an interview earlier that his daughter was free to choose her own career and that he would never force anything upon her.

“Talking about my daugh-ter, I think it is completely her (Aaradhya) choice, let her decide her career as and when she wants too.” Abhishek said.

Few months back grand-father Amitabh Bachchan couldn’t stop gushing how Aaradhya could operate iPad on her own. “Aaradhya turns on the iPad to her favorite nursery rhythms programme all by herself… picks up remotes wherever she can see one and points it to the TV in a pretense to put it on,” Amitabh wrote on his blog.

And true to her character in the fi lm, the hottie will be seen shaking her booty to the Mika Singh item num-ber that goes Laila teri le le gi. The song is not released offi cially yet, but we spotted Sunny performing to this quirky (read: kinky) composition at a recent promotional do. After

listening to the song, it is not hard for any fi lm buff to guess where the lyrics Laila teri le le gi, likhke doonga come from. Remember the famous line from Anurag Kashyap’s much-acclaimed drama Gangs Of Wasseypur, where Manoj Bajpai’s character keeps saying Keh ke loonga? And now Sunny Leone is all set to reiterate the sentiment with her shady-looking item number.

Take a look at the video and tell us if the song looks like the next chartbuster with its unabashedly shameless lyrics! Which would you prefer to watch on the big screen – Priyanka Chopra’s Babli badmaash hai, Sonakshi Sinha’s Thank God It’s Friday or Sunny Leone’s Laila?

Have you seen Sunny Leone’s rst item song, Laila teri le le gi?

Pop star Britney Spears split from her ancé Jason Trawick just two months ago, but she seems to have found new love already and she wants the world to know about it.

Since joining the royal family, Kate Middleton has had women all over the world striving to achieve her gorgeous, glossy locks.

When the Duchess of Cambridge stepped out on St Patrick’s Day, her tresses looked as enviable as ever, twisted into an intricate swept-back bun that was both feminine and elegant.

"Start by prepping the hair with JOICO Smooth Cure shampoo and conditioner (£13.95) for a smooth, sleek fi nish.

Blow-dry to create large curves and bends in the

hair. Keep the dyers air fl ow down the hair shaft for extra shine and control. Once hair is blow-dried and set, apply a light mist of JOICO Power Spray.

Roughly create two sections with your hair. The front, top and side area be-ing the fi rst, and the back, the second.

Taking the back section

of hair, loosely gather your hair and secure with a hair band just below the occipital bone. Now lightly backcomb the ponytail before dividing it into four loose sections. Take each section and loosely wrap it around your fi ngers and se-cure with a Kirby grip at the nape of the neck. Repeat with remaining sections.

Criss cross each section over one another to create a light folding pleating fi nish.

Keep the hair loose and slightly undone - don’t make it too perfect.

Now take the top section of hair and simply direct it away from your face. Secure the ends with Kirby grips around the crown area, so that the top and back sections of the hair are connected.

19Friday 29, 2013SHOWBIZInterview with Mrs.Pakistan World 2013

Tell us a bit about yourself! Not sure where to start, but

here goes! I was born in Paki-stan. My father was a doctor, and we moved to Saudi Arabia when I was very young, and stayed there until I was 18, when we moved back to Pakistan. After getting married, I moved to London with my husband, and very soon after that to Dubai. I am blessed with four beautiful children, 2 boys and 2 girls. De-spite having had a very privileged upbringing and a pampered life after marriage, this never prevented me from staying very grounded, and being keen to learn and excel, both personally and professionally. In Dubai, I got into health and fi tness, nu-trition and self-improvement in a big way. I also landed a job as an interior designer, and managed some major hotel design projects for local companies in Dubai. When we decided to focus more on the children’s education, we decided to move to Canada. Here, I have become a certifi ed personal trainer and a qualifi ed image consultant, and become an expert in anti-ageing and nutri-tion. I am in the planning stages of opening an image and fi tness studio for women in Toronto.

How did you hear about the Mrs. Pakistan World?

Through an internet search.

How do you feel about win-ning the title?

I feel it is an honour, and also that it gives me a wonderful opportunity to communicate what I feel defi nes the mature Pakistani woman of today, whilst trying my best to remove some of the stig-ma attached to such titles.

How does your family feel about the win?

My whole family has been extremely supportive. From my husband, who has always encour-aged me to follow my dreams, through my kids and my siblings, everyone feels this is something that I should do and do to a high

standard. There is a sense that I was always destined to do something like this, as I have always enjoyed the opportunity to get exposure and communicate myself to the outside world.

So what are your plans for the pageant?

Well, I have an image in mind that I would like to project, and at the same time, I hope to be a positive role model for other Pakistani women. I want to show that you can be in this kind of business, and yet be a thinking person who is modest, decent and hardworking, behaves in a dignifi ed fashion and does not compromise many of the tradi-tions that makes our country what it is.

What is your main advice for Pakistani women?

That we can be a collective force to be reckoned with in the outside world. Many Islamic countries have taken the step of empowering women to great ef-fect, and Pakistan loses out while women`s literacy and education rates are so low – in effect, we are only half as successful as we could do if half of the people are not contributing positively to our development. So my advice would be, do not accept the status quo, and, wherever you are and whatever your circum-stances, do not give up the fi ght for improvement. If every woman improves her situation by a little, that is collectively a whole lot of improving!

I would also like to convey that age is just a number: it is never too late to have ambitions and work towards achieving them. Never give up!

How do you think a title like Mrs. Pakistan World change the plight of women in Paki-stan?

I am not arrogant enough to say that I or a pageant can single-handedly change the plight of Paki-

stani women. However, any pub-licity that goes to create a sense of empowerment and a sense of ambition in women is posi-tive as far as I am concerned. This position will give me an opportunity to be internation-ally heard. I have supported some related charitable foundations, and intend to continue to spread the message of the plight of Pakistani women, eg poverty, lack of empow-erment and oppres-sion. I believe this will have some positive impact and am really excited about this prospect.

20Work is

biggest cause of stress

Work is the biggest cause of stress in people’s lives with one in three people (34%) saying their work life was either very or quite stressful, research from Mind has found.

The survey of over 2,000 people revealed that the main cause for workplace stress was frustration with poor man-agement and that work was regarded as more stressful than debt or fi nancial problems (30%) or health issues (17%).

The second most stressful factor of work for one in four (26%) people was excessive workload, followed closely by lack of support from managers (25%) and unrealistic targets (25%).

As a result of this, one in fi ve respondents (19%) said they took a day off sick due to stress, but 90% of those people cited a different reason for their absence, suggest-ing a culture of fear around revealing mental health issues. One in fi ve (19%) people felt they couldn't tell their boss if they were overly stressed. In addition, one in 10 (9%) had resigned from a job due to stress and a quarter had con-sidered resigning due to work pressure.

Furthermore, of the 22% of those surveyed who had a diagnosed mental health prob-lem, just under half (10%) had actually told their boss about the diagnosis. Mind chief exec-utive Paul Farmer said: "Work related mental health problems are an issue too important for businesses to ignore. We know that right now, one in six workers are experiencing depression, stress or anxiety and yet our survey tells us that most managers don't feel they have had enough training or guidance to support them.

"Improving mental wellbeing in the workplace doesn't have to cost a lot. Our research shows that people whose organisations offered fl exible working hours and generous annual leave said such mea-sures supported their mental wellbeing. Three in fi ve people said that if their employer took action to support the mental wellbeing of all staff, they would feel more loyal, motivat-ed, committed and be likely to recommend their workplace as a good place to work."

Your fi rst impulse on Monday is to lash out, or at least to criticize. Try your best to temper your temper with positive thinking or silence -- now is not the time to stir things up! For the next several days, you're at your best when listening or otherwise taking in new data, rath-er than jumping into action or giving orders. Get the lay of the land. The weekend brings some serious business that might be going on at a deeper level than you can fully under-stand. Let it happen and you should feel much better by Sunday.

You can only avoid something (or is it some-one?) for so long as the week begins. Do what it takes to boost your inner resources, then get out there and deal! The clearer you can be, the better -- try running your message or plan by a trusted friend or coworker fi rst. Then en-gage the ol' brain starting Thursday. No matter how strong that initial emotional response is, you've gotta get your head involved as well as your heart now. When Sunday comes, though, feel free to go with the fl ow more. It's a great day to explore!

You're chock-full of lovely ideas and even lovelier feelings on Monday if the stars have their say. Enjoy it to the fullest extent, because something (or someone) might bring you down a bit over the next couple of days. Whatever it is, keep it in perspective; when in doubt, a long walk or a long talk -- or, better yet, both together -- will help you fi nd your way. And starting sometime Thursday, luck and love are in the air! You're extra smart, extra sexy and extra imaginative -- hot! And things won't cool down for you until Sunday -- and even then only a little bit.

Give your practical side the day off on Monday -- at least when it comes to love. Dare to dream, hot stuff! You're only getting hotter over the next couple of days, too. The stars say go -- at work, at play, at night, during the day. There's plenty of time to evaluate what you've gotten yourself into starting later on Thursday. And don't worry, a massive shift probably isn't in order -- try a small adjustment or two. You might be surprised by how good it feels! And make a plan for Sunday that includes music or art. Open that mind -- and those eyes and ears!

Think for yourself on Monday. It's not some-thing you usually have a problem with (at all!), but right now it's particularly important to fi nd your own way. Then if there are negotiations to be made, the next couple of days are super for that -- at work, in love, wherever. You've got a way with seeing through all the complex-ities to fi nd what works wonders for everyone involved! But beginning later on Thursday, you're liable to get all wound up about some-thing -- and others are likely to hear about it. Know when to listen, too. On Sunday, think romance!

Your personal universe is expanding on Monday! Get out and about -- new ideas and all kinds of excellent things await. But over the next couple of days, you may experience de-lays or assorted other limitations. It's less than fun, but choose your battles -- know when it can make a positive difference instead of more of a mess! And watch for improvement starting later on Thursday. Your far-sightedness has you sitting pretty now, and others are taking notice. Your attraction factor now and through the weekend is very high!

You might be tempted to play hooky on Mon-day, and the stars say there's fun to be had! At least take a long lunch or knock off early -- you only live once. Then when it comes to recreation over the next couple of days, think low-budget, outdoors, music and/or art instead of dining or shopping. Get creative -- you'll get more out of life, and so will any lucky com-panions. Starting sometime later on Thursday, good ideas beget more good ideas. Brain-storm with the best -- at work and off the clock. And beware: On Sunday, you'll be forgetful.

Work or other issues that crop up on Monday aren't so hard to solve -- get input and info instead of stressing. And don't be afraid to ask for more time; the ideas you'll have and the help you can get over the next couple of days can really turn this around. Make the wait worth their while, and they'll totally get it. Then get someone to help you sort through your thoughts starting later on Thursday. The stars direct what's happening now, and how you respond will have a lasting impact. Sunday kicks off a couple super days for you. How's it feel, you gorgeous thing?

Strike while the iron is hot on Monday, espe-cially when it comes to love! Over the next couple of days, it's more about doing good deeds than going after what you want -- al-though if you do the former, the latter might just magically fall into place. Call it good karma. Then great minds may think alike, but starting later on Thursday, you might clash with those who think they're a bit greater than you. But come now, you don't want to come off looking like the petty party here! Be magnan-imous -- you're good at that. And on Sunday, watch your fi nances, there, Tiger!

Loosen up on Monday. Even if you're super busy, stretching the ol' mind and body will get you in the proper mindset for what comes next -- a couple of awesome days to be you! Your diligence and attentiveness are reward-ed now, with some serious attention coming your way. You're even seeing the beauty and charm in imperfections now, which makes an imperfect world seem pretty sweet. Keep the good energy going by doing some new things starting Thursday; whether at work, at play or, preferably, both! And when Sunday comes, plan to relax -- you probably won't get much done anyway.

Don't ignore that internal voice on Monday -- in fact, you should stop, quiet down and consult it regularly throughout the day. Then during the middle of the workweek, travel's favored. If you're not on vacation, try taking a day off, or at least fi rm up some plans for an upcoming getaway. You're extra open to learning now, too -- what (or who!) would you love to know more about? But beginning later on Thursday, you just wanna be in your comfort zone. A supportive friend can help. By Sunday, you're seeing some very interesting (and maybe out-there) possibilities!

Subtle powers of persuasion will get you a lot further on Monday than getting all righteous about getting your way. Let 'em think they thought of it themselves! Over the next couple of days, though, your own thoughts and feel-ings may be hazy. Things are in fl ux now, and you may not really get the clues you need until sometime on Thursday. Change is inevitable, especially now and through the weekend -- good thing you're thinking it through, guiding it and very likely loving every minute of it! P.S.: Don't work on Sunday if you can play!

RELAXING HIGHCAREFULLY tiptoeing almost 3000ft

above Rio de Janeiro on a thin wire got a bit too much for this adrenaline junkie - so he decided to have a lie down.

Fearless Brian Mosbaugh is so used to the perilous heights he decided he deserved a short break and relaxed over the famous Brazilian city. Balanc-ing his whole body on the wire, he lies completely horizontal on the precarious rope before getting back up and strolling across the rest of the highline at Pedra da Gavea.

Fellow daredevil Andy Lewis went one

step further. He dangled almost 2,800ft above the ground attached to the line by only an ankle strap. The pair was joined by fellow Americans Hayley Ashburn and Scott Rogers who together call them-selves the Moab Monkeys.

The group travel the world discovering new highlines and BASE jumps. High-lining is considered the pinnacle of the slacklining sport, in which people prove their balancing skills by walking across a polyester or nylon wire is fi xed at two

points.Andy Lewis is a proponent of ‘free-so-

lo’ slacklining, where no safety harness is worn. The mind-blowing feats of the group were captured by Mr Rogers, from Utah, US, who risks his own life while photographing the incredible moments of bravery.

He said: ‘On a scale of one to ten, highlining is actually pretty safe - but when you do it without a leash, or with only an ankle leash like Andy, the danger level can reach nine or higher. We’re very experienced so like to think the risk is fairly low but we all know the conse-quences are very high - instant death in the case of a fall freesoloing or with the ankle leash slipping off.’

He said Mr Lewis had to pull himself back onto the line after dangling upside down. He said: ‘To get back up from hanging on the leash Andy had to reach up, grab the leash, and climb up to the line which is pretty diffi cult and requires a lot of practice and upper body strength. But I have known these guys for years and they are the best out there - they have some amazing skills and the massive Brazilian slacklining community was loving every minute of it. It’s great to travel around the world and quite literally hang out with your friends meeting new people and watching how they react to you. These were some of the most spectacular surroundings we have seen and being so high above the city I doubt people could even see what we were getting up to.’–DM

BY design, the “Mohawk” hairdo is really hard to miss, but someone found a way to actually make it even more of an attention grabber.

Florida native Mohawk Gaz uses spray paint to turn his head into a truly unmissa-ble advertising billboards for friends and businesses. 31-year-old Mohawk Gaz - real name Gasmy Joseph - from Pompano Beach, Florida, has been a fan of the Mohawk for many years, but it was only a year ago that he discov-ered the true potential of his outrageous hairdo. A buddy had asked Gaz to spread the word about his birthday party, and suddenly a light bulb went off in his head - why not advertise the event on his hairdo for everyone to see? The idea was a huge success, and he has been spray-paint-ing his Mohawk with all kinds of designs ever since. He has been offering his head as ad-vertising space to friends who needed promotion, and has even been contacted by small businesses. A health-food ca-tering company called Deliver Lean sent Mohawk Gaz to Mi-ami Heat and Florida Panthers games with its logo painted on his hair and was very pleased with the results. ”It’s been tremendous marketing,” the company’s founder said. “It’s great exposure, and it’s never been done before.” To get his unusual business off the ground, Mohawk Gaz set up a website featuring photos of his best works, and created colorful fl yers he hands out everywhere he goes. But it isn’t just about the money with this guy. In fact, most of his hair ads have been pro bono for friends, and often times he wears purely artistic designs, like portraits of Marilyn Mon-roe, the Mona Lisa or Kimbo Slice. -ODC

THAT’S SMASHINGA DRIVER is said to be seriously ill after a horrifi c

accident left his sports car hanging out of the ground fl oor window of a house. The three people inside the suburban home in Lowestoft, Suffolk, escaped un-injured when the red Audi TT slammed into it shortly before 2am this morning.

The driver, believed to be in his 20s, was removed from the car and taken to a nearby hospital with serious head injuries. He was later transferred to Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge.

Neighbour Keith Shales told the BBC: “When I got there and saw the car through the hole in the hedge I thought that looks serious. I’ve seen photos of cars going into people’s houses before but from the pavement, through the bushes and the cars behind it - it was like a launch pad - it must have been for him to get that high. I reckon he must be about four feet off the ground, I’ve never seen anything like it.” Engineers were sent to the scene to conduct safety inspections on the house. Sergeant Bob Patterson, of Suffolk Police, said: “Collision investigators will be at the scene today as we try to ascertain exactly what has occurred. –TS

Benoni - Sunday could well be Benoni's biggest day since Charlize Theron won

the Oscar. International cricket seldom reaches Johannesburg's East Rand and when it does, it is unlikely to be this meaningful. For both South Africa and Paki-stan, its Benoni or bust in their last outing before the Champi-ons Trophy and they will have a sell-out crowd to do that in front of

The series has got steadily more compet-itive as it has progressed, so the 8,500-odd people can expect a fiery affair especially because there is more than just a trophy on the line for both teams. Reputation tends to mean more than silverware in bilateral ODI series anyway.

For South Africa, it is a chance to give their home fans a format to cheer them in that is not Test cricket and to prove to them they have developed as a limited-overs unit. After winning all five longest form fixtures, South Af-rica's Twenty20 and ODI squads did not follow suit. They are in transition but even a phase of change cannot go on without some reward.

Sporadically, South Africa have had it. They blew Pakistan away in Bloemfontein and defended stoically at the Wanderers. But consistently, they have not. When forced into situations from which they have to respond unconventionally, they struggle - an indication that the evolution into a complete unit is still, as Gary Kirsten would put it, in process.

For Pakistan, the picture may not be that big. They are more likely to be focused on the immediate goal of leaving this tour with enough to be able to call it a success. Misbah-ul-Haq indicated at the very beginning that he expected the Test phase to be difficult but the limited-overs contests to be the area in which Pakistan could push South Africa and even topple them over.

So far, they have. They've exposed the hosts' obvious weaknesses and demonstrated some of their own major strengths. They will want one more big effort to underline those and there would be no better place to that than in the decider.

Instead of one player, it will be South Africa's collective mental strength under scrutiny as they find themselves in a must-win situation. Understandably, it is not a major tournament knockout game and it may have absolutely no bearing on one, but is still a test of character more than it is one of skill and if South Africa have lacked in either department, it is the first. The team will have to take re-sponsibility as a whole and watching how they

work together in trying to win the series will be more important than any individual brilliance.

Similarly, Pakistan's big match temperament will be challenged. Twice, they have needed to come back in the rubber and twice they have. Both times, they've got the bit between their teeth early. If that happens again, they are likely to run away with it. If it doesn't, they will have to be up to clambering their way out of trouble. Shahid Afridi showed how to do it at the Wanderers but it may take more than one firework to light up the contest.

However, the victory for Pakistan would give them their first win in a bilateral series over South Africa while WillowmoorePark is best known for two things: it was the first ground in the country to have floodlights and it was the venue of Dennis Compton's 300 in a first-class match in 1948-49

"It's two great teams and it was bound to happen that the results would go up and down like a rollercoaster," said David Miller who is not surprised that the series is deadlocked going into the final match.

"Whenever you come to different conditions, you struggle and not sure when you're starting a series, what you can do in these sorts of surfaces, but after winning two games and levelling the series 2-2 and after seeing differ-ent players perform, we are a bit sure and you grow your confidence," said Misbah-ul-Haq.

Pakistan chase rare series win

Del Potro out of Miami; Djokovic through

MIAMI - Fifth seed Juan Martin Del Potro suffered a surprise early exit at the ATP & WTA Sony Open on Friday night.

He lost to Tobias Kamke in a rain-interrupted sec-ond-round encounter in Miami. The world number seven, playing in his first match at this year's tourna-ment after being handed a first-round bye, crumbled after failing to convert two set points at 5-2 in the first set. The German dominat-ed the second set when play resumed following the weather delay and ran out a 7-6 (7/5) 6-1 winner to reach round three of a Masters 1000 event for the first time in his career. "I saved two set points at 5 2 and somehow I came back in that set and had the chance

to win it," Kamke said on www.atpworldtour.com after eliminating last weekend's Indian Wells runner-up.

"The second set, after the break, I felt even better. Then in the beginning, he missed some easy fore-hands and he was a little bit frustrated, I think.

"He didn't play obviously his best tennis, but still I think I did a good job and pretty satisfied with that."

World number one Novak Djokovic enjoyed a straight-forward route into round three - after taking to the court later than expected due to a three-hour rain delay and 27-minute power cut. He took just 53 minutes to hammer Czech Lukas Rosol 6-1 6-0.

"It is a great start," the Serbian top seed said. "After Indian Wells, I tried to rest. There are different condi-tions here, but Friday was perfect for tennis. I enjoyed every moment of it and I love this court."

The final day of the series, in Delhi, resembled one of those when a crazy colourful storm from Rajasthan visits the capital. While the storm is there, it is all encompassing, and promises apocalypse. Soon, though, it blows over, and you can't tell it had been there. For about the first 200 minutes of the day, it was mayhem: spiteful spin, altercations, posturing, surprises, send-offs and some statesman-ship. Twelve wickets fell for 170 runs, Nathan Lyon and Ravindra Jadeja registered their personal bests, Peter Siddle became the first No. 9 to score two fifties in a Test, but India got through the 155-run chase with shockingly consummate ease to win four matches in a series for the first time in their Test history.

Cheteshwar Pujara, opening the innings in the absence of Shikhar Dhawan and fighting a finger injury of his own, led the chase with his second fifty - 82 off 92 - which on this pitch must rank alongside one of his dou-ble-centuries. It might have been made to look simple, but it wasn't always thus.

Lyon, who had removed Ishant

Sharma and Pragyan Ojha with the last two deliveries of India's first innings, nearly had his hat-trick. M Vijay charged at him first ball of the innings, but the ball turned way down the leg side, and Matthew Wade missed the half chance.

In the next over, Pujara sur-vived a close lbw shout, with a soft outside edge helping him. In the next over, Vijay was bowled while reverse-sweeping. That was the closest Australia came to having a chance.

Pujara and Kohli batted as if the events of the past two-and-a-half days didn't matter at all, as if the bunsen had lost all its fire. Which it hadn't; it was just clear-minded decisive batting on a spitter, making full use of every loose ball on offer. There were drives, there were ramps, there were sweeps. From Australia there were loose balls, over-throws and misfields.

A minor blip interrupted India's progress as three wickets fell for five runs to reduce India to 128 for 4, a period during which Sachin Tendulkar failed in possibly his last Test innings at home. Pujara, though, refused

to acknowledge all this, bringing India level with three successive fours, and let MS Dhoni, whose grey beard bears the traces of two previous whitewashes of India, finish the rest.

Enough of this drive on a clear sunny day. Back to the storm. Back to when there were skirmishes even before teams had crossed the rope. Over who should set foot on the field of play first. That resolved, Australia took the last two wickets in no time, restricting India's lead to 10.

With an assured and aggres-sive innings, Ed Cowan showed it was probably not the best move after all to demote him. He cap-italised on every loose delivery, and hit five fours in his 24, one of them a superb drive through midwicket after stepping down to Jadeja. All hell broke loose at the other end, though.

Jadeja trapped Warner with a dart, and the Indian fielders let rip with a choreographed and a long send-off. Warner has been the sledger-in-chief from Australia, and has been in the ear of the Indian batsmen since the start of the second innings of the match. There is also a previous to this

from the time India toured Aus-tralia, so that wicket would have brought Virat Kohli, in particular, and Jadeja natural and massive relief, and they just let it show.

The umpires, though, spoke to Tendulkar, who in turn, tapped Jadeja's shoulder a bit. With seemingly an appeal every ball, an explosion off the pitch every second, and a sledge every third, the umpires were under intense pressure. Amid some incredible calls, Aleem Dar erred with the Phillip Hughes lbw, with R Ash-win's offbreak turning past off.

It was all Dhoni after that. First through Jadeja, a player he has backed when few did. Jadeja removed Cowan before lunch, and Steven Smith and Mitchell Johnson just after. The latter strikes were crucial as Smith and Wade had added 41 for the sixth wicket. His first ball after the break was a slider that Smith left alone to hit his off stump. The next turned through the gate and knocked Johnson's middle stump over. Australia 94 for 7.

Siddle not only survived the hat-trick ball, he - much like Pujara - seemed to have brought his own pitch to bat on. He went

on a sensational counterattack, charging down to the spinners and clearing mid-off, and cover when mid-off was sent back, reg-ularly. He looked as comfortable as any specialist batsman did on this track.

Around him, though, Dhoni put on an exhibition too. Wade advanced to Ojha, was beaten by the dip, edged it onto the top part of his pad, and as the ball died to his right, Dhoni changed direction and not only completed a one-handed take, he proceeded to break the stumps just in case the umpire had missed the edge.

Siddle was not too bedazzled. His assault continued. Back to Dhoni then. He gambled. He brought Ishant on. The first nine balls Ishant bowled went for 12 runs. With James Pattinson, Siddle had now added 35 for the ninth wicket to take the score to 157. Then Ishant went round the stumps, and got one to reverse through Pattinson's gate. Dhoni had worked again. Fittingly, as with the bat, he ended the innings with a stumping off a ball that could have been called a wide had it been bowled with restrictive intent.
