Cityread quick read and emergent/reluctant readers

How we worked

• We worked with ESOL and Literacy tutors in our First Steps centre

• Used Cityread as part of the Six Book Challenge

Tutor /student feedback

• The Cityread quick read was an extract and they would have preferred a full book condensed in to a Quick Read

• The language proved to be difficult• Some students had to read it several times

before understanding the text

How to make it more accessible

• The tutors introduced a quiz based on the extract

• All students completing the quiz received a £10 book token

• The quiz was fun and accessible

Results

• 19 students completed the extract and the quiz

• Tutors keen to work with Cityread next year with a ‘proper’ Quick Read

What the students said

• “It is difficult this book”• “It was a good book. I found it difficult to

undestand.”• “I found thies book read very hard and some

word is very difficult.”• “Reading a book is to difficult for me.”• “I finding it difficult for me but I would like to

be mor reading of the book.”

Data

• I enjoyed taking part in today’s activity – 19 students ticked strongly agreed/agreed

• Why did you come today – 19 students ticked ‘I thought I would enjoy it’.

• The library is a great place to take part in group activities – 19 students ticked strongly agreed/agree

• I felt part of a London-wide reading event – 19 students ticked strongly agree/agree.

What now?

• There will be a Cityread Quick Read in 2015. Working in pairs can you discuss how you would use the Quick Read.

• Or if you used this year’s Quick Read share the experience

• Is there something we can do together London-wide?
