Introduction of
Guest Speaker: Joe Petrock introduced the speaker, Mayor Derrick Henry.
The Mayor shared his personal prospective and common vision for
improving Daytona Beach. Mayor Henry outlined his opinion on
the “PROS” and “CONS” of what is currently happening in
Daytona Beach.
PROS
Facilities we currently have that we should be very proud
of:
Peabody Auditorium
Lively Arts Center
The Civic Center
Jackie Robinson Stadium
Tennis Center
The Speedway
Our Colleges and Universities
Our Hospitals
CONS
Health care issues
Unemployment rates are a serious problem
Core area is challenged
Schools are suffering
Emerging pension crisis
Increasingly homeless population in attempting to relocate
the homeless to shelters in the county
Mayor Henry explained his reasoning for taking such a low paying
job. He feels that Daytona is at a “crossroads” and that now is the
perfect timing and opportunity for our community to start moving
in the right direction.
How might this be accomplished?
1. Remove the problems related to the isolation between
residents and business.
2. Recognize that our greatest resource is our beach. The new
hotel project in addition to the speedway expansion is a
very positive step in the right direction.
3. Encourage public access and parking on our beaches.

Mayor Henry ended it with a statement that “QUALITY OF LIFE
is ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT”, and that many of our residents
are either underemployed or unemployed. Mayor Henry noted that
he will do all he can in helping to get the ball rolling for our city.
The floor was open for questions.
Judy Conte addressed the issue of the homeless in regard to
how we might go about transporting the homeless out to the
county.
Glenn Storch addressed the importance of the commission
to encourage the necessity for a Community
Redevelopment Area (CRA).
Howard Tipton addressed the issue of pension reform and
the importance of the city in recognizing the unfunded
pension liability.
The meeting was adjourned at 1:10 pm.
