Design of Steel Structures Vol.2

Eight edion of this book is based on Bridge Rules (Adopted in 1941, Revised in 1964 and Reprinted in

1989), and : 800-2007. Authors have distributed present text in the edion in thirty two chaptersIS

[that is, in Four parts (1) Steel Bridges and Influence Lines Diagrams for axial forces for the members

of different types of truss-girders, (2) Special Steel Structures (3) Analysis of Structures specially, the

method of tension co-efficients for determinate and indeterminate structures, (4) Aluminium

structures. In order to emphasize that similar to various other subjects, this subject is also very vast.

Therefore, space steel structures and stressed-skin steel structures have been described special

features of this new-edion of this book may be menoned as under (1) Historical development of

different types of steel bridges details of some spans of longest spans of various types of steel

bridges, (2) Design of Guyed Steel Chimneys (3) Instantaneous Centre of Rotaon ( ) and PlascICR

Analysis of Pitched slope (i.e., gable structure) and influences of axial forces and shear forces on the

plasc moment of resistance of the member cross-secons.

Ramchandra & V. GehlotTwelh edion, 2009 of this book is based on : 800-2007 and also newly revised : 883-1994IS IS

(code of pracce for mber structures). New code of pracce, : 800 is likely to be issued soon. ItIS

is likely to introduce ``Limit State Design of Steel Structures''. Authors have distributed the text in

thirty four chapters in main text and one chapter `on Locaon of Shear Centre' in Appendix A.

Concept of Shear Centre and bending axis is important and significant and essenally needed to

understand simple theory of bending and so also unsymmetrical bending. Complete-text has

been updated and new ma er added (e.g., elasc buckling, inelasc, stability and instability of

columns and compression members, torsional-buckling, torsional-flexural buckling, etc.).

Behaviour of web-sffeners and web-panels specially near the end panels, tension-field acon

has been first me included to familiarise the students with the concept. Durability of steel

members have been emphasized phenomenon of corrosion has been disnctly explained.

The book has been prepared in the form of a 'complete package' that includes, the experiments

which have been wri en very carefully meeng the standard adopted procedures, descripve

figures that aid the understanding, discussion secons that intrigues the analycal & raonal

thinking, objecve quesons poron & a wide reference list for detailed study. The language has

been used keeping in view the wide readership which includes students, demonstrators, lecturers,

field personnel & others. The selecon of the experiments has been done very precisely,

Foundation of Mechanical EngineeringR.K.Purohit

The book is in the form of a ready reference. The subject ma er of stragraphy is full of names of

formaons, groups, etc. At mes when we need to know about a certain formaon for which we do

not know the exact stragraphic posion, then we have to search the enre book, page by page,

which becomes quite irritang and me consuming. To overcome this problem, the idea of arranging

the different formaons in an alphabec order occurred to the author. During this process it was seen

that many small formaons, which are otherwise important, do not get their due representaon,

because they lie in company or associaon with much larger formaons. Otherwise also stragraphy

is nothing but an orderly and chronological arrangement of different formaons. In other words, we

can say that stragraphy is a language by itself, where different formaons are its words. Same is the

case with large number of fossils occurring in different formaons. In the usual literature on the

subject, it is praccally impossible to find in what formaon or formaons a parcular fossil occurs

and to which fossil group it belongs. Alphabecal arrangement of fossils as shown in the list of fossils

will help students and scholars to persue their task in an easier and quicker way. To arrange such a

large number of fossils in an alphabecal order and to find their fossil groups was really a tough job.

Sll the author does not claim that all the formaons and fossils occurring in the Indian stragraphy

are included in this book, and it cannot be the last word on the subject. This is more true in case of

fossils, where unlimited literature is available.

Material Science and Processes is a core subject having close relaon with all branches of

Engineering. Needless to emphasise, this new book has been designed a self learning capsule.

With this aim in view, the material has been organised in a logical order and line diagrams have

incorporated to enable to students to thoroughly master the subject. The contents of the book

has relevance with the subject prescribed by , Rajasthan University and Instuon ofJNVU

Engineers as well as to the courses of study prescribed by various universies of India.

Index

The second edion of Thermal Engineering (new name Mechanical Engineering) has been

published with the hope that this edion too, would be received with the same zeal and

enthusiasm as the first edion was privileged to receive earlier. In the new edion four chapters on

Manufacturing Processes and chapter on Refrigeraon and Air Condioning have been added.

Needless to emphasise, this new edion has been designed as a self-learning capsule. With this aim

in view the material has been organised in a logical order and lots of illustrave examples have

been incorporated to enable students to thoroughly master the subject. It is believed that this

book, mainly meant for under-graduate students, will capvate the a enon of senior students as

well as teachers.
