THE CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT IN THE 1960’S AND TODAY
CIVIL RIGHTS
MOVEMENT
The civil right movement was started in the late 40’s and is continuing today except that there are different minority
citizens that are discriminated against.
CIVIL RIGHTS
MOVEMENT
Virginia was a state that many looked to during the
civil rights movement. Due to the movement being in the deep south – Virginia was
overlooked. Most issues taken to court in VA during this time
were about civil rights.
(Civil Rights Movement in America)
INTERRACIAL MARRIAGEA VA couple were run out of their hometown who brought a lawsuit against
VA’s laws on interracial marriage. The couple were arrested and subsequently let go only under the condition that they leave the state of VA or dissolve their relationship. Instead they stayed and fought for interracial marriage.

RICHMOND 34Due to inspiration from the 1960’s protest groups held by Martin Luther
King, Jr., 34 African Americans went into Thalmiers where they could shop but could not eat in the dining area. These non-violent protesters stood
their ground as they were spin on and called names. There were yelled at and had stuff thrown at them. They were arrested for a briefly. Now VUU is
holding a commemorated memorial to the historical event in Richmond VA(Squire, 2010).
FORD T. JOHNSON JR. V.
VIRGINIA IN 1963
Mr. Johnson refused to sit in the section of the
courtroom in Richmond, VA that was assigned to
African Americans. He was summoned by the judge who demanded that he
move but instad he stood in front of the judge with
his arms crossed in protest. He was
subsequently found in contempt. His case ending up in front of the Supreme Court where the decision was overturned on April
29, 1963
(Johnson v. Virginia – 373 U. S. 61 (1963), 1963)
PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES
BEING DISCRIMINATE
D AGAINST
People with disabilities are now being
discriminated against in this landmarked case, a
petition was filed against the Health and Human Services who granted money to
people with disabilities but only if they stay in
separated group homes. This violates the Americans with Disabilities Act (Va. Program under civil
rights office scrutiny).
CHINESE AMERICAN INTERNS WERE
DISCRIMINATED AGAINST BY WAL-MART
Chinese Americans were fired from a Wal-mart in
Richmond VA because they protested about the inside issues of discrimination
that they observed. What ever happened to Freedom
of Speech (Helber)?
SAME SEX MARRIAGE COUPLES FILE COMPLAINT
Same Sex Marriage couples filed complaints by the ACLU of Virginia in order to change the laws regarding same sex
marriages. When God is brought into the picture as in this case whereas He made
couples to be a man and woman, how is it that God is not allowed in our schools or
military; yet is used as a convenience against same
sex couples to marry (Harrison)?
SUMMARIZATION
Although many great issues from the 1960’s brought
about a more conscious way of thinking towards African
Americans, it has not proven that those hate mongers
learned their lesson. Even today, discrimination exists against Chinese Americans, People with Disabilities, and Same Sex Couples. People
still find a way to bully others not like themselves and it is a sad day that I realize through
research, just how much discrimination has not
changed. African Americans and women fought for their freedom so now prejudicial
people turn their attention to others who they can exploit.
