A PUBLICATION OF CDE 4TH QUARTER, 2011-12 2012-2013 Governor Bryan Wiltsie Hello Fellow Civitan’s I was honoured to attend the International Convention in Tallinn, Estonia on behalf of Canadian District East. We made lasting friendships with Civitans from all over the world. Tallinn is a beautiful Old and New city, a city that hardly sleeps at night because of only 4 hours of darkness each day. This was a trip of a lifetime and one that will never be forgotten. Thank you once again for allowing me to be your 2012-2013 Governor. International President Joe Parker unveiled this year’s theme “Civitan Passion Speaks with Action” My fellow Governor Elects from around the world were sworn in as the 2012-2013 Governors of our districts. Joe gave us an inspiring installation speech in which I have included a few of his words. Volunteering is about compassion and giving. We would not be able to do the noble work we do without your dedication and passion. You don’t volunteer because you have more time than others. You volunteer because you have more heart and are passionate about Civitan! Our Passions in life help us develop a richer vision of our capabilities as we connect with our talents and interests. When we are passionate about Civitan, we are able to mesh what we love and what we are good at together to benefit others. When we find our passions and use them in positive ways, not only are we more fulfilled, but we spread this joy to our communities. Our passions and talents are varied as each individual cherishes and expresses them differently. Each of you has the opportunity in Civitan to discover your passion and act on it in your own special way. I hope you will make every day count this year and let your “Civitan Passion Speaks with Action” Congratulations to Civitan Ken Fournier, on becoming a member of the Distinguished Sponsorship Team (DST). This award was announced and presented at the International Convention. Civitan members recognized on the Distinguished Sponsorship Team (DST) have sponsored a minimum of 150 members. DST is a very prestigious symbol to appear after a Civitan’s name. Currently there are only 14 members who are on the DST honour roll. Civitan’s Member Sponsorship program recognizes Civitans who excel at recruiting new Civitans. Any Civitan distinguished in this way receives a Member Sponsorship Team pin. There are two ways a member can earn this honour: By sponsoring four or more members in the previous fiscal year. By sponsoring 50 or more members – Civitans who achieve this goal are given life member status as MST. If you earn MST status the first way listed above, there are provisions for keeping your super recruiter status. When a Civitan has sponsored four or more members in the previous fiscal year, he or she keeps the recognition for the next fiscal year. However, to remain on the MST honour roll he or she must sponsor four or more members during the next fiscal year. The initials MST or DST appear after a member’s name on Civitan International recognition, listings, etc. Each Civitan who sponsors four or more members receives an MST pin stamped with the year in which he or she qualifies. Over 125 members earned this pin last fiscal year. Each lifetime MST member earns an MST pin showing the recruitment level he or she earned. Each person qualified as a DST receives a DST pin. We want you to be a part of our super recruiter team by sponsoring people into Civitan! Set a goal to sponsor one per quarter this year. That way, the next time you see the initials MST appear after someone’s name, it is yours. Share your volunteer successes with people around you and sponsor them into your Civitan club. INTRODUCING YOUR 2012-13 CDE BOARD

Governor - Bryan Wiltsie

Bryan was born and bred in SensationalSmiths Falls Ontario. Some might say hewas raised with a firm hand and behind thathand was a badge….a badge worn proudlyby Sergeant Jim Wiltsie of the Smiths FallsPolice Force. Slim Jim, as he was referred toback-in-the-day, along with his wife Joyce, instilled values that moulded his character towhat it is today. Honesty to self and others

and concern for the common good was a huge part of hisupbringing. Bryan was always involved with his community in one way oranother. As a youngster and throughout his youth heparticipated in soccer and wrestling and was awardedcountless trophies and awards. Soon after marring his wifeJulie, he began volunteering his time coaching soccer.Unfortunately, due to work commitments, the team beganaddressing Julie as their coach. Although her boasting wasfree flowing, he realized they were a team and she deservedher time in the sun (so-to-speak). Now married and withchildren, Bryan joined the Smiths Falls Volunteer FireDepartment where he learned first hand how importantvolunteers were to their community. During the course of histwo children Kylie and Matt growing up, he spent a fair amountof his free time coaching; first t-ball, then soccer and finallyending with softball.Moving forward, Bryan entered the world of Civitan in thesummer of 2005. Without being pinched, he will admit that itwas Julie who was responsible for him joining. Once a JuniorCivitan with the Smiths Falls Civitan Club, she enjoyed her timeinteracting with others. Without her persuasion, he believes hewould have missed out on a rewarding life experience. Bryanand Julie joined Civitans Jim and Joyce Wiltsie, both long timemembers with Jim having 35 years in Civitan and Joyce havingover 35 combined years in Civitan and Civinettes. Throughout the years, whenever Bryan donated his time toothers he gave a 100%. Therefore, it is not surprising that heshares the honour of being Rookie of the Year for CDE for2005-2006 with his wife Julie. Driven to learn all he could aboutCivitan from others, Bryan only missed one CDE Conventionand that was due to illness. In his second year in Civitan hejoined the Smiths Falls Civitan Board of Directors as VicePresident, in his third he was President Elect and in his fourthyear he became President. In the seven years of Civitan, Bryanhas been on the Smiths Falls Civitan Board of Directors for six.Once Bryan worked his way through the ranks of the SmithsFalls club and with a slight push from Bob Robinson, he set hissights on the district level and ran for Lt Governor. Workingalongside and supported by his valued mentor, Governor EricPottle, Bryan knew his next goal would be to becomeGovernor.Bryan has been employed with the Printing and PublishingIndustry for over 30 years. Having held the position ofNewspaper Publisher, he is well-aware of the importance ofvolunteer organizations and the good work they do for theircommunities. He is proud to be a Canadian and the CivitanCanadian district east Governor for 2012-2013.

For those of you who were unable to join us I believe all inattendance will agree with me that our guest Speaker,International President-Elect Joe Parker put on a fantasticpresentation. It focused on “The Energy Bus” and the ten rulesfor what he called “The Ride of Your Life As Civitans”. The tenrules are:

Ten Rules For The Ride Of Your Life As Civitans:

1) You’re the driver of the bus2) Desire, vision and focus move your bus in the right direction3) Fuel your ride with positive energy4) Invite people on your bus & share your vision for the roadahead5) Don’t waste your energy on those who don’t get on the bus6) Post a sign that says “no energy vampires allowed”7) Enthusiasm attracts more passengers and energizes themduring the ride8) Love your passengers9) Drive with purpose10) Have fun and enjoy the ride

I mentioned at the Region 5 meeting that this was the first timeI could remember having six International representativesattending the meeting. In attendance were: InternationalPresident-Elect Joe Parker 2011/12. International President-Elect Designate 2012/13 Bob Robinson, Past-InternationalPresident Bill Hiscott, International Director Region 3 DuaneCapps, International Junior Representative Anita Pereira andmyself. We also had our Junior Governor Miranda Jurilj fromCanadian District West.

We were fortunate to have Joe and his wife Evalee spendthree days with us and took them around our district to showthem some of the projects that our members have done, just asCivitan Eric did down in the East District. Both were veryimpressed with what they saw in Region 5. To make thingseven better, Joe received several emails from Civitansrequesting a copy of the ten rules.

At the International Convention in Tallinn there were 389Civitans registered with 130 being first timers. Tallinn wasunbelievable. The architecture and location made you want tostay on longer to appreciate the history of the country. OurInternational Convention in 2013 will take place July 3rd to the6th in Denver Colorado. For the 2014 convention a Bermudacruise is being looked into.

a tremendous honour and privilege. When I joined the Civitan Club of Perth in April 1991, at theurging of my cousin Jack Gamble, I never dreamed that I wouldever become the International President of this outstandingorganization. Almonte Civitan brought in 5 new members in this quarter andpromptly put them to work. Catering events were slower thisyear than others but members were out in force for the manyBBQ's held this quarter. The Canada Day Car Show and BBQwas a success while a few members collected donations laterin the day for the Fireworks show in Gemmill Park. Thefollowing week brought Celt-fest and thousands of folk fromnear and far to enjoy energetic fiddle music as we manned aBBQ and Bar for the two-day event. Later in the monthmembers braved the heat on the gates at the North LanarkAgricultural Society's 3-day summer fair. By the end of July wewere all toasty brown and gave contrast to the many givingblood at the Clinic held in our Hall. A second Blood DonorClinic was hosted by our Club in September as well.

In August a crew travelled to Providence Point toprovide the morning snack at Camp Quality. Even now we areplanning our upcoming Apple Pie Day which supports thecamp. We ordered Claxton Cakes and await their arrival inearly October. Despite a pile of work by organizers andinteresting activities our Support our Troops Family Fun Daymelted in the extreme heat but the Club supported the venturewith a good donation.

BBQ’ing continued into Sept with support given toAlmonte District High School as they hosted orientation daysfor the grade 7 & 8 students who will now be housed at thehigh school on Aug 29 and the grade nines on Aug 30.Students, families and staff were a steady stream but our teamhas learned how to make it go well! The public schools enjoyour BBQ'ing skills at their Meet the Teacher nights and theLanark County Junior Soccer Tournaments to be held the firstweek of October at the Civitan Soccer Fields. We pray the rainholds off to avoid the mud bath that ensues. We ran a BBQ atthe Minor Soccer Tournament Sept 29 at which the Women'sOlympic team attended to help with clinics. Almonte is gratefulfor our member Civ. Wayne Hand who offers his trailer to carrythe large barbecues to sites off our property. Almonte is nowlooking for a new BBQ as we have barbequed “Big John”almost to death.

The Hall rentals continued and we thank the set up &take down crews, chefs and catering staff. Those who decorate

our Hall have it beautifully ready for the fall activities. Auctioncanteens continued over the summer and there is always ahive of activity in the kitchen as the short order cooks do theirthing. Our tent rentals were “on the go” this summer and withthe crazy weather we were repairing poles and tents from winddamage. The medical loan cupboard continues to be a sourceof aid for many in our area and we thank those who oversee it.The Club has begun a number of maintenance projects in theHall and is about to complete the paving of the last section ofthe parking lot.

In the last quarter Almonte has supported Meals onWheels, On Stage for Kids, Special Needs Seniors Team asthey travelled to the Ontario Games where they placed first!! We congratulate Civ. Bob Robinson of the CivitanClub of Perth, who was elected Civitan International President2013-2014 at the International Convention in Tallin. Bob is onlythe third Canadian elected to this position in over 90 years. Almonte was pleased with the acclamation of Almonte Civ.Peter Guthrie as International Director of Region 5 for 2013-2015. AYLMER

Since March, the Aylmer Civitan Club has remained quiteactive and focused on our goals. The Rock & Rhythm event took place on May 18th. This was amusical contest with participants from seven local high schoolsand CEGEP. Under the leadership of Mark Wright and hiscommittee, numerous hours were volunteered to plan, organizeand conduct the project. The event was professionallyorganized and unfolded without any hitches. However, theattendance was less than projected and the sale of souvenirswas disappointing. The concept is innovative and hasconsiderable merit. We are confident that once the event isbetter publicized more interest will be generated. In September, we hosted our annual Golf Tournament at theKingsway Golf Club. The purpose of the event is twofold.Firstly, to commemorate deceased Civitan members andsecondly raise funds. Approximately 60 golfers participated inthe tournament and $1,500 of the profits will be donated to theChildren’s Hospital (CHEO).In addition, we organized several BBQ’s. Many of our membersattended a local Bingo and a portion of the profits wereallocated to the Civitan Club. Finally to raise funds, weprepared several suppers for the Legion. In terms of Fellowship, the members had a BBQ in July and apool party in August. In light of our successful year, we are confident that our Clubqualifies for Honour Club. As we bring closure to this fiscalyear, we begin to do some planning for next year. Our newExecutive will meet next week and begin the planning process. We are “on the energy bus” and will pursue the ride towardsour goal for a better community through Civitan.

GREATER PETAWAWAby Civitan Marie Arnold

The Greater Petawawa Civitan Club has been very busy thelast little while. Both Civitan Marie Arnold and Darlene Lambertwent to the Civitan International Convention in Tallinn, Estonia. They both stayed five days longer to see more off Tallinn. While Civitan Marie and Darlene were away the draw the clubwas running was held at the Sunday night Bingo July 8/12. Thewinner of the $1000.00 gas card was Alex Couette ofPembroke, Joan Sealey from Almonte won the $500.00 foodvoucher from Moncions store in Petawawa and KathyCousineau of Pembroke won the $250.00 in cash. Theproceeds from this draw will go to the Deep River Hospital. In August Civitan Marie Arnold made a donation, on behalf ofthe club, to both the Silver Threads Seniors Club in Petawawaand to St. Joseph’s Food Bank in Pembroke for the sum of$1,000.00 each. Then Civitan Lynn and Pat Mathewson madea donation of $1,000.00 to the Deep River Food Bank and forthe total sum of $5984.17 to the Deep River Hospital, of which$984.17 came from our raffle. Other donations were also madein August; $100.00 to the Lanark District Civitan Club and$325.00 to the Pembroke Civitan Club. Even though we are asmall club we have donated $9409.17 in August. Ourdonation’s this year alone are over $21,454.67. This is madepossible by the support of our Bingo players and those thathave supported our raffle draws and bake sales. We are nowcollecting pennies for the food bank in Pembroke. We are alsoplanning some card games this year as well.I am happy to report that we are getting more members thismonth. We hope to have 5 new members by our meeting inOctober. Civitan Marie Arnold is still writing her news columnevery other week and new people are asking about Civitan.Because they come from other parts of Canada they want tofind out what we are about and what we do. They are membersof the armed forces and want to know how they can be of helpto our club. Some of our members will be attending the convention that willbe held in Kingston in September. There is more than saying I am Civitan, it is showing that youare caring and want to help those that are of need of your help.Did you stop to help someone this week with out expectingpraise for your good deed? Do you only help when others arewatching you? Or are you one that will do a good deed forothers just because you care? Do you give from your heartwhen you give to help others or because you feel you mustgive to let others think better of you? Oh sometimes it is hardto be a good Civitan let alone being a caring person whensome may criticize all that you do. Well don’t give in to them,as they really don’t care about others. When I was just a child my father told me that if I fed the birdsand small animals and cared for the needy that I would nevergo hungry and not want for much. That God would look afterme and see that I had what I needed.I have not wanted for much and have never gone hungry. So Ihave always tried to help those that are in need.I am proud to say I am a Civitan. Let us try a build a bigger andgreater Civitan in Canada and around the world. So if you ever come up to Petawawa look for the Civitan Bingothat is held every Sunday night at the Petawawa Civic Center.Or give one of us a phone call and let us know you are inPetawawa.Have a good week. Oh yes smile it may make someone’s day.

LANARK & DISTRICT

Our club has been busy this summer with our canteen at thebaseball diamond 4 nights most weeks. We held for theCanada Day Festivities and fireworks for the Village at the ballcanteen on July 1st. The long weekend in August was the150th Anniversary for the Incorporation of the Village of Lanarkand we were involved with the organization of the parade atnoon, operated a BBQ during the Music in the Park program onSaturday afternoon, and worked at the door and the bar at thedance in the evening at the arena. In August, we helped out atthe plowing match in Balderson on the gate entrance orparking cars. We are now looking forward to a busy fall withour joint installation meeting with Carleton Place, our prostrateGolf Tournament on September 9th, our Adopt-A-Roadprogram which we work with the local youth group and ourLanark Civitan Scarlet Fall Run on October 14, 2012.

PAKENHAM & DISTRICT

The Pakenham and District had a very short and quiet summerbut planners were busy making sure we are ready to go for thefall and winter seasons. Two Committees were struck (Fundraising and Frost Festival) and meetings were held over thesummer.A Fund raising Committee will see their first event taking placeon Friday, September 28th at a Spaghetti Supper to be held atthe United Church Hall, 5-7 pm. The Spaghetti Supper isusually held during the annual Frost Festival but attendance atthat time of year is unpredictable because of weatherconditions. More events will follow. The Pakenham Club had the pleasure to run the canteen withthe Almonte Civitan Club for the first Mississippi Mills--Canadian Cancer Society’s Relay for Life held in June atGemmill Park in Almonte. The weather threatened to ruin theevent and indeed the clouds opened and the winds picked up –literally – because tents and tablecloths had to be held down!! What would a Relay for Life be without the elements drawingattention to the event? The Club held its annual Nine ‘n Dine at the PakenhamHighlands Gold Course on July 28th with members of thecommunity taking part in this fun event organized by CivitansLance and Lesley Jefferies and John and Karen Barr. And to round out the summer, Sharon and Jim Whyte hostedthe annual Club Barbeque at their home on August 17th. Thisis always a time to relax and just enjoy the company of othermembers while we dine on hamburgers, sausages, corn-on-the-cob and pot luck salads and desserts – enough to open agourmet bake shop. The Club meets on the third Thursday of every month at 7:15pm in the basement of the Pakenham Branch of the MississippiMills Public Library, 128 MacFarlane Street.

At a wedding party recently, someone yelled “Allthe married men please stand next to the oneperson who has made your life worth living.”

The bartender was nearly crushed to death.

PERTH

I recall a time there was not much activity from Civitan in Perthduring the summer months. It has certainly changed with manyevents engaging our members. The photo is from the Relay forLife BBQ mentioned below and speaks for itself.Relay for Life was not just an overnight event. Members parkedcars at Brown Shoe in Perth during their annual sale andorganized a BBQ for the busy shoppers. I helped park cars onthe Friday morning and must say I have never seen so manysmiling faces. The ladies were heading for a shoe sale and theanticipation was greater than a child’s at Christmas. Beforeleaving I wandered over to the BBQ area and McDonaldswould have been jealous of our workers and the customersenthusiasm. The event raised half of our $3,564 donation tothe Relay.Camp Quality is also a noteworthy event during the summer.Clubs from Smiths Falls, Lanark, Almonte, Pakenham,Carleton Place and Perth all worked together to provide aCivitan Day for the campers. Several Perth members attendedand had a wonderful time with the campers.Another notable event during the summer was a Duck Race tobenefit our local Youth Action Kommittee (YAK). We partneredwith the local Lions Club to complete this event and all fundsbenefitted YAK. YAK provides youth with valuable experiencesof personal development, opportunities for spontaneoussocialization, and exposure to the benefits of positive rolemodels. Community youth come to the center voluntarilycreating stellar opportunities for youth engagement initiatives.Youth acceptance into our programs and activities is universaland non-conditional.The Perth Kilt Run washeld on June 23rd and isadvertised as the world’slargest kilt run. I certainlyam convinced af terviewing the waves ofrunners that were at least10 minutes passing myviewpoint. Civitan GlenMoore completed the racewith his two granddaughters in good time and good spirits.Civitan members gave water and cheers to the runners andthe photo shows the wild costumes.

SMITHS FALLS

On August 9th a cookout was held at the cottage of Civitan GibHodge , it had rained all day but the weather cleared in time forthe outing which was enjoyed by all who attended

On August 17th Partners Night was held at our hall, weenjoyed a delicious potluck supper, this event was chaired byCivitan Julie Wiltsie. Following Partners Night the Hall wasopened to the public to see the LOL Comedy Gang of BrianHope, Randy Borden and Jason Blanchard, these three put ona very entertaining performance. Jason Blanchard was thehighlight of the evening and kept everyone in stitches.Following the Comedy Gang a video was shown it was JeffDunham Controlled Chaos. Everyone in attendance had agreat time.Civitan Jim MacAllister and his wife Bev celebrated their 50thAnniversary on Sunday September 9th 2012.

Not wanting to brag but Civitans Joyce and Jim Wiltsiecelebrated their 57th Anniversary on August 26th with a threehour cruise on the St. Lawrence River.

The Civitan Year is drawing to a close and we would like tothank all the Civitans that gave up their time to serve on theBoard of Directors. And to those Civitans who will be startingtheir term next month, be opened minded to the choices youwill have to make.

PAST GOVERNOR ELECTED DIRECTOR

REPORT FOR 2011-2012

AYLMER CIVITAN CLUB:The club enjoyed a successful year under the

leadership of Civitan Marcel and will be applying for an honorclub award. Some of the projects they were involved with: theSanta Claus parade, steak bbq where they select a citizen ofthe year, rock and rhythm for the local schools, helped raise$35,000 with other groups for st. Vincent de Paul, golftournament with the proceeds going to CHEO and suppers atthe legion. A very dedicated club and it is nice to see anincrease in membership.

CARLETON PLACE CIVITAN CLUB:The club had a successful year under Civitan Joan

and had an increase in membership and will also apply for anhonor club. The bingo is their one main fund-raiser . They heldbbq's, pool parties and supported many local groups. The clubis constantly seeking new and younger members and plays anactive role in the community. It is hoped that with newmembers that new ideas and projects will be forthcoming. There was concern about the district golf tournament as it hadto be cancelled and perhaps it should be removed as a districtproject as most clubs run their own.

GREATER PETAWAWA CIVITAN CLUB:The club had a successful year under Civitan Darlene

and will likely qualify for an honor club . They held raffles andrun a weekly bingo. The awards night is being planned forOctober with possibly 4 new members joining. This club issmall but mighty and supports many local groups. They havealways been big supporters of the Civitan InternationalResearch Center. They are always looking for new projectsand if a local group needs assistance they are always there tohelp. Their meetings are held at the Petawawa Civic Centerand as you drive into the building you will pass a beautiful playground for children that was created by their club.

These three clubs were great to work with and I amsure they are going to have a successful upcoming year. Youare always made welcome when you visit and the future lookspromising. It has been an honor working with them.
