#1: Planning a Volunteer Program

StrategyDefine how a volunteer program will fit into the organization's structure.

#3: Volunteer Orientation & Training

Plan Orientation ProcessDefine who will be managing the volunteers. Determine volunteer expectations and create a volunteer handbook. Schedule orientation that allows you to onboard multiple volunteers if possible.

OrientationHere are some things to include during the orientation process:

– Define expectations– Create schedule– Provide skills-based training as needed– Introduce them to staff – Share how evaluations will be conducted– Demonstrate how valuable they are to your organization

Ongoing TrainingDetermine what type of ongoing training can be provided. Schedule monthly trainings and/or brownbags for training and sharing experiences

#4: Supervising & Recognizing Volunteers

Tracking TimeDetermine how volunteers will submit time, and how their time will be tracked.

Schedule Check-InsSchedule time to check-in with volunteers to discuss how work is going, what they need help with, and what follow-up training is required.

Recognizing VolunteersFigure out what criteria you will use to recognize volunteers, and best ways to recognize their contributions and the impact they are having through their work.

#5: Evaluating Volunteer Programs

Define Criteria for EvaluationFigure out how volunteer work will be evaluated.

Create Evaluation ScheduleDetermine how often the evaluation will take place.

Conduct EvaluationsWork with volunteers to conduct evaluations and determine successes, challenges, areas of improvement, additional training required, and next steps.

Evaluation Follow-UpDetermine next steps in terms of guidance and training needed.
