ORDER DUE: September 2, 2010 RELEASE DATE: September 21, 2010

JUST THE FACTS: • Acclaimed violinist Hilary Hahn (who won the 2008 Grammy for best instrumental solo with orchestra) releases a very personal and unique album devoted to a recently commissioned concerto and a staple of the violin repertoire. Hahn performs Jennifer Higdon's Violin Concerto which was written expressly for the violinist and recently awarded the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Music. Hahn and Higdon first met at the Curtis Institute where Hahn attended Higdon's class on 20th-century music history.

• Watch videos on Hahn's YouTube channel where Hahn interviews Higdon about the work • The Higdon, which was premiered on February 6, 2009 in Indianapolis, is here paired

with Tchaikovsky's concerto from 1878 (first performed in 1881). Initially thought to be unplayable and critically condemned, the work has emerged as one of the most popular and enduring works for violin and orchestra.

JUST THE FACTS: • Aware of it or not, you are more than likely to be familiar with the remarkable work of Ryuichi Sakamoto, thanks to his many award-winning soundtracks for such directors as Bertolucci, Oliver Stone, Pedro Almodovar and Brian De Palma. His score for The Last Emperor won an Oscar, while his well-known music for Merry Christmas, Mister Lawrence gained a BAFTA. But in fact the Japanese composer, pianist, conductor, arranger and producer has made a career of crossing musical and technological boundaries. He has experimented with, and excelled in, many different musical styles, making a name for himself in popular, orchestral and electronic, as well as film music. Never one to mark time, he continues to push the limits of his artistry, fusing genres, styles, and technologies to create new and exciting directions in musical expression.

• Since his first album more than three decades ago, Sakamoto has become an international sensation, both solo and with his Yellow Magic Orchestra, and his oriental-inspired music has brought a distinct Japanese sound to the Western world since the 1980s. His status has given rise to fruitful collaborations with many other stars, such as David Bowie, David Sylvian, David Byrne, Iggy Pop and Youssou N’dour. The brand new, 12-track album Playing The Piano is, however, simplicity itself. As the name suggests, it features Sakamoto as solo pianist. Captured live at concerts across Japan, he gives compelling interpretations of some of his best-known creations, including both The Last Emperor and Merry Christmas, Mister Lawrence. These evocative miniature tone-poems make for a relaxing yet musically stimulating delight; a highly accessible introduction to the artistry of one of the most extraordinary musicians of our time.

JUST THE FACTS: • Stories Yet To Tell” is the second ECM album from the trio that made the Grammy-nominated “Distances” (a recording which also won the Top Jazz Vocal CD prize of France’s Academie du Jazz and contributed to Norma Winstone’s winning of Germany’s Skoda Jazz Ahead Award for services to European Jazz). If the awards have emphasized the trio’s remarkable singer, this is nonetheless a real band with a unique ensemble identity.

• Jazz ballads, old and new, find their place alongside – for instance – adaptations of Friulian folk songs, and ‘chamber’ pieces influenced by classical or contemporary composition. Textures, colours and rhythms may be drawn from scattered, surprising sources: a thirteenth century Troubadour ballad, an Armenian cradle song and more.

• The musicians play songs from Mexico’s Armando Manzanero to Armenia’s Komitas, to Wayne Shorter. What they take they make their own, much of the material they compose themselves, and most of the words are Norma’s.
