    Final Project Overview

    The final project for CJS 200 is comprehensive, designed to outline the procedural steps of thecriminal justice system. In this you incorporate your foundational knowledge, resulting fromcompletion of discussion questions, CheckPoints, and assignments, all into a Microsoft

    PowerPoint Presentation. The scope of this presentation leads you through the elements ofcrime, police, courts, sentences and punishments, correctional facilities, and communityinvolvement.

    Your Microsoft PowerPoint Presentation needs to be 12 to 15 slides and include detailedspeakers notes. Cite at least two references to support your statistical findings, formatted

    according to APA guidelines.

    Final Project Timeline

    You should budget your time wisely and work on your project throughout the course. As outlinedbelow, some CheckPoints, assignments, and discussion questions in the course are designed toassist you in creating your final project. If you complete your course activities and use thefeedback provided by the instructor, you will be on the right track to complete your projectsuccessfully.

    Suggested in Week One: Read the Final Project Overview and Timeline in Appendix A.Review the definition of crime you stated for the first discussion question.

    Suggested in Week Two: Begin researching crime trends in your area or state. Select acrime trend and begin to chart its statistical information. Research a police department Website and/or contact a police department directly for help with this information.

    Suggested in Week Four: Begin researching the role and the responsibility of the policeafter a crime has been committed.

    Suggested in Week Five: Research the courts in your area or state. Select one toreference. Begin researching those who work in the courts by identifying their roles anddescribing their responsibilities.

    Suggested in Week Six: Review the purpose of sentencing and the factors ofpunishment.

    Suggested in WeekSeven: Begin researching the correctional facilities in your area orstate. Research the type of security (maximum or minimum), the designs, whether they areprivate or public, their population statistics, and their statistical crime data.

    Suggested in WeekEight:Begin researching community-based programs in your area orstate. Identify their purpose and functions.
