February 8, 2015 Two weeks ago Mrs. Jodway, Ms. Woehling, four students from the Christ the King Youth Ministry/ Student Council and I had the pleas- ure of serving at St. Christine’s Soup Kitchen and Pantry for the second time this school year. The last time we worked in the pan- try and I was put on sock duty. I must admit I was initially disap- pointed to “just” hand out socks. Af- ter all, it isn’t the most exciting job to have. But after giving out a few pair and seeing how much it meant to the families, I soon realized that nothing that happens at St. Christine’s is mi- nor. Fuzzy footies, dress socks, colorful and white, each person had a prefer- ence and they didn’t want to be rushed. I began to check out each person before they approached me and tried to find the perfect socks just for them. I received so many smiles, hugs and high fives, not just for the socks but mainly because the people could sense I cared. I learned a valuable lesson that day at the soup kitchen and I hoped the chil- dren would walk away with the same. When we arrived we went straight to the pantry where Maureen, Tina- marie, Virginia Jacques, and Sr. Fiorentina and all the volunteers greeted us with hearty hellos and immediate instructions. There is so much to do and we noticed the line was already growing as we entered the building. Three of the students were given the task of packing groceries, while one joined Mark Barkey and Dave Collins to escort the clients and their groceries to their cars. It was a very cold afternoon and I think it made the children realize how im- portant it is to be bundled up and what some people have to experi- ence to get a warm meal and neces- sities. At two-thirty I took two students with me to serve at the soup kitchen. They took turns serving drinks and the delicious meal that Dorothy Sullivan prepared. The chicken tetrazzini was a hit with everyone and people were coming back for seconds! Our school chil- dren sent over bags with beanie babies for the children as well as lollypops with scriptures that were attached. Everyone really enjoyed those treats as well! After we left, three of the students shared with me what touched them the most. Destanee, seventh grader has been attending CK since the first grade. She said, “I thought serving at the soup kitchen was a great experience for me. It was my first time volun- teering and I really enjoyed it. One of my favorite parts was to see the smiles on the little kid’s faces. The other part I enjoyed was helping in the pantry. It was also fun taking the food to the people’s cars. It gave me a chance to get some fresh air too.” Karon, is an eighth grader that has been attending our school for two years. He told me, “Serving at the soup kitchen made me really appre- ciate the things I have. It made me feel good to put smiles on people’s faces and I was proud to be a stu- dent at Christ the King knowing that we always help others!” Makayla is also in her last year at CK. She has been a student here since the fifth grade and has learned many valuables lessons. She wrote, “My experience at the soup kitchen was very heart touch- ing! It taught me a lot and showed me how ungrateful I act sometimes. I realized that there are a lot of peo- ple who don’t have as much as I do. I think all kids need to go so they will start to appreciate every little thing they get and not care so much about if things are name brand or not.” I am so glad that our students got a chance to serve at St. Christine’s. I think they each had a great time and learned about the spirit of giv- ing in the process! Fridays of Lent ~ 7:00pm Feb. 20, 27—Mar. 6, 13, 20, 27

Soup & Bread Supper Friday February 20 ~ 6pm

In Koelzer Hall

On the First Friday of Lent we are planning 2 special events. First, we will have a soup and bread sup-per in Koelzer Hall at 6pm. Come and enjoy a bowl of soup and then go into Church for the Stations. Second, our young people will pro-vide a “Tableau” of the Stations of the Cross. If you were unable to be here for this last year, I can tell you it was wonderful! Please con-sider taking an hour of your time and joining us for this truly prayer-ful offering of the Stations of the Cross.

CHRIST THE KING Page 3

Jesus and Geometry

Hello! My name is Jacob Rodeheffer, I'm a teacher at the school and a mem-ber of the Service Corps. Are you curious about what goes on at the middle school?

An environment of poverty is a challenging thing. It causes a lot of added stress for students and their parents, because they need to work much harder to have the same kinds of opportunities — or these opportunities may not be available at all. At Christ the King School we strive to model the love of Christ, providing the children the quality education they deserve in the face of all the difficulties working against them.

"Five minutes, five minutes!" the 6th graders holler as they scramble to go to the bathroom, sharpen a pencil, turn in their homework. Class is about to begin, and they are allotted exactly five minutes to be 100% ready. The min-utes go by, and one boy pokes his head in the door and asks, "How much time left Mr. Rodeheffer?" One minute, I say. He starts a new refrain of "One minute!" and he runs to get a last drink from the fountain. Then, the final warning: "Ten seconds!" Kids are jumping to their seats right when I hit the bell on my desk. Ding! Two students run in the door, late. "Sally and Johnny, marks," I say as I write their names on one side of the board. Sally and Johnny will miss out on a reward at the end of the class period.

The kids love to have fun, that's for sure. They'll race to beat a time limit; fight hard to win a game; sing loud enough for the whole school to hear; or laugh wildly at a movie. They can find joy in the simplest and most mun-dane of things. It can be silly, sure, but I also consider that there is spiritual virtue in being able to take such a simple-hearted pleasure in living.

Then little children were brought to him for him to lay his hands on them and pray. But the disciples scolded those who brought them. But Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me and do not try to stop them, for the king-dom of heaven belongs to such as these.” And he placed his hands on them and went on his way. (Matthew 19:13-15)

An education is not just about teaching content. It's just as much about in-stilling values and character. A big one is getting the students to value school, and a lot of the time this is achieved by making it enjoyable for them. The kids are very capable of having fun, let me tell you! They love to do active things like dancing, running, and basketball. They love to win competitions. One of their favorite activities in math class is "whiteboards" — writing on their own mini whiteboards to solve a math problem posted on the board. They love the opportunity to use a different medium, they love the competition for speed and correctness, and they love the instant feed-back. In religion, the sixth graders get a kick out of singing and, oddly, memorizing things such as Bible verses.

In math class, we don't let the poor explanatory value of our textbooks get in the way of learning. Often, the kids will already know what topics they need to study because they may have seen it before in some standardized test or poorly-written text but never really absorbed it; so when I pull out a random topic, like exponents, the students have heard of it before and are prepared to listen to me just start lecturing about it, even without the aid of a textbook. We've spent a lot of time on fractions, decimals, and percentages, and the eighth graders have got a taste of negative numbers and algebra. It looks like we will get to have some geometry as well before year's end.

Religion class is even more flexible about the subject matter. There is a small textbook, but it's not nearly enough material to fill up our year. So we've been jumping into all kinds of topics, whatever I believe to be inter-esting and relevant to Christian life. We've explored prayer, virtues and vices, Jesus's life, the Ten Commandments, the liturgical calendar, Judaism and Islam, the sacraments, and the meaning of the Mass. Right now we are studying the Bible — the divisions of the Bible, as well as particular stories — and we hope to learn some lives of the saints and Church history.

I ask God to help me connect with students, to share with them the most important of lessons. And I ask you to pray for our fun-loving students and our hardworking staff.
