GAME OVERVIEW No. 1 in the USILA coaches and Nike/Inside Lacrosse media polls, the Virginia Cavaliers (2-0) conclude a home-stand on Saturday, hosting the Stony Brook Seawolves (0-1) at Klöckner Stadium. UVa is coming off its seventh consecutive win after defeating VMI on Tuesday evening. Faceoff for the contest is slated for noon.
THE SERIES VS. THE SEAWOLVES The Cavaliers own a 9-0 all-time record against the Seawolves and 2012 is the seventh-straight season the two programs have met in a series that started in 1999. Today’s contest will be the first played at Klöckner Stadium since the 2008 meeting. Snow conditions in Charlottesville moved the 2010 regular season contest to the U-Hall Turf Field. UVa later faced the Seawolves on Long Island in the NCAA Quarterfinals in 2010. Stony Brook and first-year head coach Jim Nagle brings an 0-1 Seawolves team into Klöckner Stadium with a lone setback coming at the hands of Fairfield. Mike Rooney leads the Seawolves with three goals. Robbie Campbell leads the team with two assists and four points. Sean Brady is saving 50 percent of shots, while posting a 13.00 goals against average inside the pipes.

THE SERIES VS. STONY BROOK• Virginia owns a 9-0 all-time record over the Seawolves and 2012 marks the sev-enth year in a row this series has been contested• Virginia won last year’s meeting on Long Island in one of the more dramatic fin-ishes of the season in overtime• With 44 seconds left in the first overtime period, Steele Stanwick grabbed a rico-chet ground ball in front of the cage and delivered the winning shot in the open net• Stanwick has 10 career goals against Stony Brook, which comes out to 10.1 per-cent of his career 99 scores, including five in last year’s meeting• The last two meetings, both at Stony Brook, have been one-goal contests, includ-ing in the 2010 NCAA Quarterfinal round• The last meeting between the two programs in Charlottesville was played at the U-Hall Turf Field during the regular season in 2010 due to heavy snow conditions at Klöckner Stadium• The last time these programs played each other in Klöckner Stadium Danny Glading had five goals and three assists to lead UVa to a 15-13 triumph over the Seawolves on Feb. 23, 2008
HALL OF FAMER STARSIA TOPS NCAA DI WINS LIST• Virginia head coach Dom Starsia is one of the most accomplished coaches in the history of the college game coaching at Brown (1983-92) and Virginia (1993-pres-ent)• He passed Jack Emmer for most career wins by a head coach while coaching at a NCAA Division I school with UVa’s quarterfinal win over Cornell in 2011• He becomes the second UVa head coach to hold the record as Jim Adams retired with 284 career victories after the 1992 season, giving way to Starsia to take the Cavalier program over in 1993 - Adams retired as the record holder• He was inducted into the Lacrosse Hall of Fame in November 2008• He has led UVa to four national championships (‘99, ‘03, ‘06, ‘11)• His teams have made 23 NCAA Tournament appearances, the most by any Division I coach in history• His Cavalier squads have advanced to the final four 13 times• One of three coaches in college lacrosse history to win 100+ games at two schools (along with Jack Emmer and Dave Urick)• Only Division I coach to win 200+ games at one Division I school while winning 100+ at another Division I institution • He is a three-time national coach of the year (‘85, ‘91, ‘11)• ACC Coach of the Year a record eight times

2012 CAPTAINS NAMED• Midfielder Colin Briggs, longstick midfielder Chris Clements, midfielder Matt Kugler and attackman Steele Stanwick have been selected captains this season• Stanwick and Briggs are first-team preseason All-Americans by Face-Off Yearbook• Stanwick is a captain for the second year in a row and the first Cavalier to be voted captain in back-to-back seasons since Mike Timms (2008 & 2009)• In its 83rd lacrosse season, Stanwick is the 23rd Cavalier to be named a captain in more than one season

Rob Emery took a Colin Briggs pass and ripped it for the game’s final goal with 4:48 left in the contest, lifting the No. 1 Virginia Cavaliers (1-0) to a season-opening triumph over the No. 20 Drexel Dragons (0-1), 9-8. Just over three minutes prior, Bobby Hill tal-lied his first collegiate goal to tie the game, 8-8, in front of an over-capacity crowd of 2,331 inside Vidas Field. Capacity crowd is list-ed at Vidas Field at 1,500. Chris Bocklet started the game’s scoring, cutting around the edge to score at the 11:34 mark in the first quarter, giving UVa the 1-0 lead. The Dragons reeled off a 4-1 run to take the 4-2 lead after Ryan Belka scored unassist-ed at 5:06 in the second quarter. UVa’s Matt White scored on a Bocklet pass to cut UVa’s deficit to one goal, 4-3, heading into the half. White’s goal to close the half, coupled with scores by Emery and Briggs to start the third stanza, gave the Cavaliers a one-goal lead, 5-4, at the 11:20 mark. Drexel tied the game on a Robert Church score 50 seconds later at 10:30. Owen Van Arsdale scored his first two collegiate goals via passes from White and Briggs to give the Cavaliers a 7-5 lead with 5:31 left in the third quarter. Drexel, however, scored three-straight goals to retake the lead at 8-7, capped by a Nick Trizano goal with 10:08 left in the game. UVa then took over behind the goals from Hill and the game-capper from Emery, the sophomore’s second of the day. Rob Fortunato was stellar between the pipes for UVa, saving 11 shots and picking up five ground balls. The game was the senior’s second career start. Fortunato also started the season-opening win against Drexel in 2011 where he stopped a career-high 12 shots.for us and that is the way it’s going to have to be during the season.”

Steele Stanwick scored two goals and dished out five assists as the No. 1 Virginia Cavaliers (2-0) won its home opener for the fifth- straight year, defeating the VMI Keydets (0-3), 19-5, inside Klöckner Stadium. Virginia now owns a 19-0 all-time record against its in-state opponent. Drew Leonard put VMI up just 1:05 into the game on a pass from Keith Long. UVa tied the game at 8:17 in the first quarter on Stanwick’s first goal, unassisted. The senior’s score started a 6-0 run which was capped by a Chris Bocklet goal with 22 seconds to go in the first. Virginia proceeded to put the game away courtesy of a 12-2 run, which included 10- straight goals, capped by Matt Cockerton’s first goal of the year on Carl Walrath’s first collegiate assist at the 5:18 mark in the third quarter. Matt Cockerton scored two goals and his brother, Mark, added three scores. The Cockerton brothers have now each scored goals in the same game three times. In 2011, they both scored against Mount St. Mary’s (Feb. 22) and VMI (Feb. 28). Stanwick led all scorers with seven points after being held scoreless for only the fourth time in his career at Drexel.
