FROM PASSION SPRINGS PURPOSE

My goal: I first want to enter the industry for some experience and eventually go back to school for a PhD.

Clare’s advice: “Talk to people who have worked or interned with the company before—they will be your best source for advice.”

This Week’s Opportunities EventsFEB. 23 PR101 Workshop

FEB. 23 Showcase your Experience: Resume Workshop

FEB. 24 FRESHstart

MAR. 4 Breaking Down the Investment Banking Industry

MAR. 8 Meetup at Sense Corp

I worked at Procter and Gamble in the R&D department as a product researcher.

Getting started...

The most challenging part about the internship search process is getting noticed. There are very few students at WashU who major in science yet do not wish to continue onto Medical School. I found that I had to be more independent in finding ways to get myself noticed by companies. I worked on my cover letter with the Career Center and then applied online. I spoke to both family friends and WashU friends who had worked for P&G and that helped me land a phone interview and then finally P&G flew me out for a day visit. I scheduled mock interviews with

the Career Center which gave me confidence before my actual interviews. Bringing my story to life...

I learned that I am very passionate about problem solving and continuing to learn and develop the skills necessary to do research-whether its inside a lab, or in the business world. After my internship I was offered a full-time position with P&G that I gladly accepted. I will be working full time as a researcher in their skin care division. A PhD is still on the table at some point in my future, and I am hoping that my experience in the industry will help me discover a

more narrow discipline that I am passionate about. My internship take-away...

Working at P&G was an amazing opportunity and it was a great balance between challenging work and fun social events. I mostly enjoy the company culture and that fact that my work was being taken seriously-even as an intern! It’s important to try out new types of internships or classes each summer in your college career. I would have never been able to determine what my career goals were without learning what my career goals weren’t.
