NEWS RELEASE

Many fixed tube heat exchangers have a bellows ele-ment in the shell to allow the tubes to expand at a differ-ent rate than the shell. A leak in this bellows cannot betolerated and the repair is generally considered to bevery expensive because it is believed that the tubes mustbe removed to replace the bellows. Senior FlexonicsPathway has developed a bellows replacement proce-dure called a clam shell technique that eliminates theneed to retube the exchanger, thereby saving time andmoney. Following is an example of a typical clam shellrepair that was done at Senior Flexonics Pathway’s shop. The same procedure can be done at a job site anywherein the world by Senior Flexonics Pathway OnSite Ser-vices personnel. Total turnaround time can be a matterof days in an emergency.

CLAM SHELL BELLOWS REPAIR ON HEAT EXCHANGER

NR 71

Saves the Cost of New Tubes for BASF

Repair procedure for BASF:

1 . The heat exchanger was received atSenior Flexonics Pathwayand visually inspected.

2. The existing bellows covers and shipping bars wereremoved.

3. The failed bellows was removed by grinding and theattachment surface was inspected to check for anycracks in the base metal.

4. The bellows attachment surface was measured toaccurately determine the as-built diameter of the shell.

5. A new bellows was built to ASME Section VI I I re-quirements and cut in half for installation by the clamshell technique.

6. The new bellows was fit to the existing shell andtacked in place followed by fillet welding of the bellowsto the shell and full penetration welding of the bellowslongitudinal seam.

7. All bellows welds were dye penetrant . examined andvisually inspected.

8. The shipping bars were reinstalled to protect the bel-lows in transit.

9. New covers were installed.

10. The completed assembly was prepared for ship-ment and returned.

With the new clam shell bellows installed, theheat exchanger is good for many years of additional ser-vice.
