Since her first exhibition last year Clare Frankl-Bertram has continued to seek ways to use the memory, strengths and vulnerabilities of clay to embody ideas of place and displacement in her pottery.

Her most recent project has focused on her fascination with the coast. Coast as edge, the site of erosion, transition and change which satisfies the need to stare out to sea, to relieve constant semiotic overload on land.

Searching for a working method that translates the feelings of edge and transition without resorting to narrative mimicry has led to a series of pieces using the centrifugal force and speed of throwing combined with the slow processes of hand building.

‘This project marks the transition from my being preoccupied with the space of pots as a carapace to developing the associative power of the surface as a generator of form. The pieces to be shown at the Paul McPherson Gallery are a mix of sculptural and anthropomorphic works which lie on the edge of functionality’.
