Geography

LOCATIONClarinda is located in the southwest part of the state of Iowa. We are located in Page county and our city consists of a population of about 5,000 people. We are locarted along the Nodaway River.

Our city logo is based on the idea of quilting which personifies our close-knit community and down home atmosphere. The triangles that form the logo along with the visual diamond that is formed from the whole logo stems from the individual squares that make up the quilt. The orange red color comes from our city bird the cardinal. A fun fact is that if you rearrange the letters of Clarinda you can spell the word ‘cardinal.’

Our Logo

The logo was inspired by quilt squares that were made up of triangles. The pattern dervied from the logo is also an extension of the patterning formed in quilts. The pattern is also abstracted, modernized and simplified to emphasize both the homey and modern city qualities of Clarinda.

Along with the original orange red logo for our city, Clarinda has a set of four logos that represent our four most important values. The four pillars that make up the values of Clarinda are community, education, nature, and music. Clarinda prides itself in our community service, our top-notch education for our children,

the nature that surrounds our town and the music that comes from our famous big band leader Glenn Miller. The lines that form the individual lines of these four logos come from the beautiful lines that form from rows of corn in the fields surrounding our city. In the summer, lush green and amber in the fall.

Our color scheme consists of four different colors. The red-orange comes from our city bird, the red cardinal. The blue and green comes from the beautiful blue skies

and the lush green grass that stretches for miles into the distance. The mustard yellow shows the yellow cornfields that are symbolic of our city.

Our Patterns

Our pattern is generated by lines that are used in our alternate logos. The lines that form the pattern are the same as the pantones that are used in our original logos.

COMMUNITY EDUCATIONClarinda is the home of Miss Jessie Fields (Shambaugh), a rural teacher who developed a club of farm boys in connection with the Clarinda Chautaugua at the age of eighteen. Her boys became trained in judging livestock, winning honors at Iowa State College and top place in the National Judging Contest at Omaha. The club of farm boys grew into the “4-H Clubs” and Miss Fields, who later married I.W. Shambaugh, has been nationally honored as the Mother of 4-H.

The Carnegie Foundation funded the Lied Public Library in Clarinda, Iowa. After Mr. William Orr was appointed as a member to the Board of Trustees, he began negotiations with the Carnegie Library Foundation to acquire funds for a library building. In 1908, his tenacious efforts paid off and $15,000 was granted by Andrew Carnegie to build a public library. The Board also decided to extend the use of the library to neighboring towns and townships of Page County, by the creation of branch stations in the various surrounding communities. The library was a pioneer is this type of service and interest was manifested throughout the state due to its success.

MUSICNATUREEvery year Clarinda hosts the Glenn Miller Festival in the Summer. At the Glenn Miller Festival, visitors and entertainers from around the world will converge in Clarinda to celebrate the music and the memory of Alton Glenn Miller, American bandleader, trombonist, composer and arranger who disappeared while directing the Glenn Miller AAF Band during World War II. Come and visit the performance of our exciting bands from around the world along with the Glenn Miller Orchestra.

Clarinda is right in the mist of the Great Plains. Seeing the Great Plains and the rows and rows of cornfields is a sight to remember. In our city you can enjoy the beautiful scenery as well as encounter various animals including our city bird the red cardinal which can be seen flutttering between the branches of our trees. Clarinda is known best for our endless corn fields as well as soybean fields.
