Highlights38TH ANNUAL SENIOR SLUGGERS TOURNAMENTThe Moody Blues are competing in the Senior Sluggers Tournament and they want you to know they love receiving support. The plan is to have the team play around 10:00 am on Tuesday at the big ball diamond in Moody Park for their first game. The team will play at least one other game and will likely play even more as they aim for another championship. The complete schedule will be available at the field. Why not come over and root the home team on?

SKETCHING FROM NATURE I For those who enjoy sketching out in the back garden, park, beach or patio, this workshop will introduce you to the basics of sketching outdoors. We will begin in the studio, practicing drawing leaves, twigs, shells, rocks, driftwood and flowers. Some simple techniques will be demonstrated to add inter-est, using shading, texture, and line variation. Then we will head outdoors to sketch, back in the studio the last part of class to share our drawings and finish them up. In the event of rainy weather, we will work indoors from still life, or photo images. All skill levels are welcome. Suggested supply list available upon registration.

CONVERSATIONAL SPANISHOur Spanish Conversation Group continues to study to-gether in the Arbutus Room, Friday mornings. At 9:00 am we have Beginners’ Group, free for Century House members. At 10:00 am we have Intermediate Studies with a suggested $2.00 donation. The last Friday of the month there is no beginner’s class at 9:00 am, but we have Spanish conversation at 10:00 am, with no charge. Occasionally we will visit a local restaurant for a Mexican lunch. Michael Anthony is our skilled facilitator.

COURT WHISTPlayers needed! What is “Court Whist” you ask? Origi-nally, this game was played by royalty in the 18th and 19th century. It might sound boring but it certainly is not, especially when you have so many interesting friends. It is similar to bridge because it involves four players bro-ken into teams of two; however, it is MUCH EASIER to play. Tuesdays, 1:00 - 3:30 pm

BRIDGEAfternoon Bridge is very social. We support new and former players. Our goal is to help each other, and en-joy the game of bridge. We play Tuesdays and Fridays, 1:00 - 3:45 pm.

CARPET BOWLERSOur Carpet Bowling club will teach for free any members who are interested to learn the game. We play on Mon-days and Wednesdays, 9:30 - 11:00 am. Give it a try, it’s loads of fun and we play all year long.

CENTURY HOUSE ARTISTSNew members are always welcome. Bring your art proj-ect Thursdays at 1:00 pm and work on it for two hours while you visit with a welcoming group.

CENTURY DRAGONSWe are looking for Active Seniors (59+) to join our team. Our competitive Women’s team practices twice weekly and a recreational Mixed team practices once a week. Practices are held on False Creek through Dragon Zone. Come join us for a trial paddle!

COUNSELLING PROGRAMS Are you going through a difficult time? We can help! Century House has free confidential programs for all people 50+ in the New Westminster area (member-ship not required). • Life transitions and finding new meaning• Bereavement and loss • Depression and anxiety • Loneliness • Declining health • Family matters

1. VITAL CONNECTIONSFamily Services of Greater Vancouver has committed to work in partnership with Century House to offer the Vital Connections Counselling program again this year. Vital Connections offers accessible counselling services to seniors and their family members with a counsellor in place for the program one day a week on Thursdays. New referrals are welcome to leave their name and contact number on the Vital Connec-tions voicemail (604.519.1064 ext. 2).

2. SENIOR PEER COUNSELLINGTrained senior volunteers provide one-to-one sup-port. Senior Peer Counsellors will stand at your side when you are feeling disheartened or dispirited. Meet-ings can take place at Century House or your home. (604.519.1064 ext. 1 or [email protected]).

Senior Peer Counselling is totally dependent upon donations for the running of their program. Our coun-sellors are dedicated trained volunteers who support people through life transitions, for example, bereave-ment, loneliness/isolation due to a move, loss of friends or health, caregivers who need to talk to an empathetic listener, etc. We are grateful for the spon-sorship of Century House.

VOLUNTEER VISITOR PROGRAMSenior Peer Counselling has a new program for iso-lated seniors. If you are a senior living in New West-minster and are feeling lonely or isolated and would like some conversation and companionship, or if you know of a senior who might welcome a Volunteer Visi-tor, please call us at 604-519-1064. Volunteer Visitors will meet seniors in their homes, at Century House or other place of choice.

LEADS (Learning, Educating and Developing Seniors) support your interest in lifelong learning, starting with a series of workshops exploring Leadership, Communication and Development topics. LEADS give you a supportive environment to develop the skills and confidence to take on leadership roles in your community. LEADS give you the opportunity to practice those skills by co-presenting a public workshop at Cen-tury House. In you are interested in participating in the upcoming program please sign up at the front office. The program will run in the Fall 2019.

FALL REGISTRATION Fall is the perfect time of year to try something new! Why not browse through the Fall Favourites brochure (which features all the registration based programs) and find something new. We offer courses in fitness, pottery, all kinds of different art mediums, Tai Chi and many other creative endeavors. Get your brochure at the front office early July. TOP DOG: CKNW - THE NEW WESTMINSTER YEARS LECTURE The New Westminster Museum and Archives is joining forces with 980 CKNW to celebrate their 75th Anniver-sary! During the “980 CKNW 75 Years Celebration” at Anvil Centre, and again in the evening, this lecture will highlight the “NW” in “CKNW”. Using archival sources and focusing on the 1950s, we will examine the station’s years in the Royal City: its personalities, its development, and more. Registration required. VICTORIAN BOOK CLUBDiscuss Victorian (and Edwardian) literature and culture as you sip tea in the luxurious 1865 Irving House. SKETCHING FROM NATURE II This workshop is for those who are interested in taking their nature sketches to the next level. We will begin in the studio, experimenting with mixed media techniques, adding colour to drawings. Then we will head outdoors to sketch, meeting back in the studio the last part of class to share our artwork and finish them up. In the event of rainy weather, we will work indoors from still life, or photo images. All skill levels are welcome. Suggested supply list available upon registration.
