Hail Rated Tile

Hail storms ravage the U.S. and wreak havoc with damages of $1.6 billion every year.1 This is a costly natural disaster; however, there is a concrete solution.

Boral Roofing is proud to announce our new Class 4 Impact Resistant concrete roof tile, awarded the highest hail performance certification recognized in the industry. These Class 4 tiles withstood sequential 2 inch ice ball impacts at speeds of up to 70 mph.2

Tile roofs may help qualify for insurance reductions in hail regions. Simply have your roofing contractor verify that one of the certified Boral roof tile was installed. Significant premium discounts may be offered in the states of Arkansas, Colorado, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Wisconsin and Wyoming. Class 3 Hail Rated Tile

Boral Roofing has a complete offering of Class 3 Hail Rated clay and concrete tile, including the only clay tile in the U.S. to receive a Class 3 Hail Certification with our 1-Piece “S” Tile.

In the Class 3 hail test, 1 3/4 inch ice balls are shot at 104 feet per second (approx. 70 mph) impacting the tile.2

The Benefits of Tile Roofing

Energy Efficient Tile has inherent insulation properties due to its high thermal mass. This helps reduce peak energy demand and energy costs – making your home more comfortable to live in and less costly to heat and cool.3

green – not a Petroleum-Based Product Tile is made from naturally occurring, locally-sourced, plentiful raw materials.

limited lifetime, Transferable Concrete Warranty Your investment in your new tile roof is protected with our exclusive warranty.4

Because each tile is individually attached, tile is easy to repair or replace. Installation and maintenance costs over time are lower than other roofing materials because concrete tile is made to last for generations.

Specially designed to perform in hail storms, our Class 4 Impact Resistant has undergone severe impact resistance testing in accordance with the Factory Mutual 4473 (FM 4473) standard.

The test uses the impact forces of freezer ice balls propelled to develop free-fall kinetic energies of the same size hail. Ice balls generally are harder and denser than hailstones; thereby simulating the worst case hailstone.

In the Class 4 hail test, 2 inch ice balls are shot at 104 feet per second (approx. 70 mph), which is the speed necessary to develop the intended kinetic energy. The Class 4 hail test is the most rigorous test using the largest ice balls, impacting the product specimen 4-6 times depending on the amount of exposed area. Impact locations included edges, corners, unsupported areas, overlaps and joints. After impact testing, the roofing materials are visually scrutinized and to pass, the test specimens can not show any evidence of visible cracking or breakage.8

Hail Testing

The filming of this hail testing took place at Architectural Testing’s laboratory in Dallas, Texas under the test protocol for Factory Mutual 4473.

8 The FM 4473 test standard provides a procedure for determining the impact resistance performance of roofing materials which are intended for use on primarily “Steep Slope” roof systems. The successful certification of the product requires the manufacturer to reference the Architectural Testing Roof Covering Impact Certification Program and Hail Impact Resistance Classification on its product and packaging.
