Forests Protect wildlife; help in maintaining the balance between CO2 and

O2 in the atmosphere; give protection from harmful solar radiation; regulate the temp. of earth; keep the water cycle in nature going; check floods; provide food, medicines, wood, raw material and prevent soil erosion.

The management of forests and wildlife resources is an important task as these are among the most useful renewable resources we have. Forest is a complex biological system. So, to protect forests, it is also essential to conserve air, water and land. Large scale man- made alterations such as mining, construction of dams, etc. have changed the environment a lot and caused serve damages to the forests. As a result, every year we are losing forests at a rate of more than 1.5 million hectares. Deforestation has to be stopped !!!!!

The Continuous Exploitation of forests has damaged the ‘Ecosystems’. The forests are both protective and productive. Trees take time to grow and quick regeneration of forests is not possible. With depletion of forests, wildlife is also affected; So forests need conservation. Some of the major causes are :- Deforestation. Unplanned harvesting. Forest fire is another cause of forest depletion.

Forest Conservation – Diversion of forest lands for other purposes have to be prevented.Reckless cutting of forests need to be checked regularly.Planned Harvesting –A better way to get wood from the forests is to cut only some of the trees in an area. The uncut trees will prevent soil erosion and produce seeds so that new trees can grow.Afforestation –This is the practice of renewing a forest by planting seedlings or small trees. Selective cutting oftrees in these plantations provides wood for construction and also keeps the forest cover intact.

Suggestive Measures To Conserve Forests

Protection from Fire –Huge forest areas are destroyed by fire every year. Fire may be caused due to the carelessnessof people, or by natural methods such as lightening or friction between stems and branches of trees. Forest fires are controlled by spraying fire extinguishing solutions from aircrafts etc.Protection from Insects, Pests, and Overgrazing –Other important cause of forest destruction are diseases and insects. Methods of controlling diseases in forests include removing infected trees and using insecticides and fungicides. Insects can be efficiently controlled by natural insect predators. They kill insects in large numbers.‘Overgrazing’ by cattle, sheep, horses, etc. not only destroys grasslands but also the trees in forests. The young trees get eaten or killed by trampling. The lower leaves are eaten up and the roots and trunks are injured. Overgrazing must, therefore, be prevented to save forests.
