CLASS III
ENGLISH OBJECTIVE: Enhancement of Vocabulary and Reading Skills
For some children, summer is a time dedicated to playing video games, sleeping in, vacationing and relaxing as much as possible before the beginning of yet another school year. As parents and educators we need to ensure that our children do not fall into what is commonly referred to as the “summer slide” Decoding or sounding of words is the first step in reading. Children can decode when they understand that each letter of the alphabet has a corresponding sound. Good readers increase their vocabulary every time they read and are able to recall these words when they see them again. They begin by developing a sight word vocabulary. Researches show that students who do not read during the summer may experience a decrease in their reading level. But guess what? Students who read regularly during the summer often improve their reading level and ability! Hereby these are some tips to Promote Reading
Surround your children with reading material
Set aside a regular time to read to your children everyday
Look for reading problems (As it is a joint effort of a teacher and a parent to find out if your child can sound out words, know sight words, the early children receive help, the more likely they will become good readers).
Use a variety of aids to help your children.
Show enthusiasm for your children’s reading.
Read together with your child.
Encourage your child to read in bed.
Be a role model: Read, read, read in front of your child
