DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI
The University of Texas at El Pasois proud to recognize its 2006Distinguished Alumni presented bythe UTEP Alumni Association. Theaward is the highest honorbestowed upon graduates whohave excelled in their professionsand sustained a commitment to theuniversity.
This year, our 2006 DistinguishedAlumni are John “Danny” Olivas andReese Rowling (awarded posthumously).
John “Danny”Olivas
Schoolbooksalone couldn’tsatisfy John“Danny” Olivas’thirst forknowledge.
The best lessonsoften came from
building model-rocket motors in thebackyard or helping his dad takeapart a car engine in the driveway oftheir El Paso home. Eventually, thismechanical aptitude began todovetail nicely with the math andphysics theories Danny learned inUTEP classrooms.
And it produced a remarkableresult: The 1989 Miner grad is now aNASA astronaut scheduled for his firstflight into space, aboard the shuttleAtlantis in March. He’ll be part of themission STS-117 crew that will deliverand install a truss segment for theInternational Space Station.
Danny earned a bachelor’s fromUTEP and a master’s from theUniversity of Houston, both inmechanical engineering. He alsoholds a Ph.D. in mechanicalengineering and materials sciencefrom Rice University. Dannyattended Bonham Elementary,MacArthur Middle and Burges Highschools in El Paso.
Danny says his mother, CarmenOlivas, a schoolteacher, and father,Juan Olivas, a locomotiveelectrician, encouraged his youthfulinquisitiveness.
“They got me a little kid’stelescope. I remember climbing upon the top of my roof and lookingat the stars and moon,” he says, adding he often thought aboutrocketing through space towardthose stars.
Danny took an engineeringposition with Dow Chemical. Helater worked as a senior researchengineer at the NASA Jet PropulsionLaboratory. Danny was named toNASA’s astronaut program in 1998and has worked in the RoboticsBranch.
Danny, who is married and afather of five children, is thrilled tobe this much closer to fulfilling hischildhood dream. But he’s keepingit all in perspective.
“At the end of the day, it is stilljust a job,” he says. “I stay focusedon training and learning, and beinga good father to my wonderfulfamily.”

Reese, who died in 2001 at theage of 73, was renowned for hisvision and tenacity in the energyindustry. But he was also known forhis giving heart, often fundingscholarships for family members —and complete strangers he metduring his lifetime.
His generosity touched UTEP aswell: He established the ReeseRowling Endowed Fund forGeology, which provides stipendsfor graduate and undergraduatestudents. Reese was honored asUTEP’s Gold Nugget Award recipientfor the College of Science in 1993.
Reese worked with several oil andgas companies at the start of his
career, including Standard Oil ofTexas, Signal Oil and Gas, and EvansProduction. In 1959, he moved toCorpus Christi and eventually beganwork as an independent geologist.Together with William E. Colson,Reese formed Tana Oil and GasCorporation in 1972.
In the 1980s, Teco PipelineCompany was formed as a sistercompany to Tana. Tana’s portfolio ofreserves was eventually sold toTexaco for $476 million. Moresuccess followed in the 1990s. Reeseand his son Robert Rowling formedTRT Holdings Inc., acquiring amajority interest in MBank CorpusChristi. The bank was recapitalizedand then sold to NationsBank for$131 million in stock. TRT alsocreated TRT Development Company,a hospitality and resort propertiescompany. In 2002, TRT formed TanaExploration Company, LLC, whichoperates in the Gulf of Mexico.

REGALIAHISTORY
Prior to 1980, the Universityof Texas at El Paso (and itspredecessors, the Texas Collegeof Mines and Metallurgy andTexas Western College)borrowed regalia for ceremonialoccasions. In 1980, DramaDepartment faculty member C.L.Etheridge suggested that thetime had come for UTEP to haveits own unique regalia.President Haskell Monroeestablished the UniversityHeritage Commission to raisefunds for the creation of officialregalia, to include a mace, chainsof office for the President andthe Vice President for AcademicAffairs, a UTEP banner and seal, and a banner and seal for eachof the colleges.
A University seal, depicting ElPaso’s sun, mountains and river, had been created for TexasWestern College in 1949 byrenowned local artist JoséCisneros. This seal wasincorporated into the officialheraldic layout for the Universitybanner designed by ArtDepartment faculty memberSally Bishop Segal, who alsodesigned seals for the colleges ofLiberal Arts, Science, Nursingand Allied Health (now theCollege of Health Sciences), andthe Graduate School. AlbertRonke, Drama Departmentfaculty member, designed theseals for the colleges of BusinessAdministration, Education, andEngineering. All eight seal
designs in their heraldic layoutwere then crafted into fabric byEsther “Terri” Cornell. In 2001,the seals for Engineering,Business and Health Scienceswere updated by Sally Segal toreflect new programs offered bythose colleges.
UTEP alumnus James Lovecreated the Chain of Office forthe President, consisting of eightseals reproduced on two-inch-diameter enameled disks; theChain of Office for the VicePresident for Academic Affairs;and the University Mace.

group of flanges which are madeof silver and gold-plated copper;within these is mounted a rosequartz stone. The designresembles an abstract flowerbud, with the rose quartz aboutto break through the flangesthat surround it. This symbolizesthe attainment of knowledge, the student’s growth fromnovice to scholar.
GOWNS, CAPS ANDHOODS
The tradition of the gown, cap and hood worn at UTEPevents dates back to universitiesin the Middle Ages, when suchgarments had very practicalapplications. The gown andhood kept the chill away asstudents and teachers labored inhalls of learning that were oftendamp and drafty.
Originally, the mortar board,or flat square cap, was a hatwhich, when removed, providedits wearer with a flat writingsurface. Writing instruments andpaper were kept in the longsleeves of the gown.
Until modern times, caps andgowns were made of black fabricto illustrate the gravity oflearning. Although today’sgowns, caps and tassels areavailable in a variety of colors, the symbolism of color remains. For example, students whograduate from UTEP wear atassel whose color represents thecollege from which they receivetheir degrees.
The hood drapes over theshoulders and is worn by those
who have earned a master’s ordoctoral degree. It consists of ablack shell, lined in satin, andbears the color of the institutionthat conferred the degree. Thehoods worn by UTEP graduateshave an orange lining crossedwith a white chevron. The velveton the border bears the color ofthe field of learning in which thedegree was earned.
