Here sits our last store to be opened during our 50th anniversary fiscal year! It is in

Mt. Pleasant and a LEED certified store. Harris Teeter and Fox Capital Partners broke

ground on Rivertowne Place in May 2009, South Carolina’s first LEED certified shopping

center and the company’s third LEED building. The store was designed to reduce water

usage by estimated 50 percent by installing waterless urinals, automated faucets and flow

restrictors on prep sinks. It was estimated that we recycled over 95 percent of the

generated construction waste from the store. A positive way to end the year!

Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) is an internationally recognized green building

certification system. The certification starts with the building process and includes store performance

such as energy and water effieciency.

One more thing... our 199th store

I hope you enjoyed this celebration of 50 years of Harris Teeter history. Our Legacy

Committee had a wonderful time researching, gathering materials and interviewing

Harris Teeter alumni.

To make sure this tradition continues for the next 50 years, we have obtained a

fireproof file cabinet that resides in the corporate office. It will contain this book,

a letter to the person designated as the company historian and a file for every year

leading up to our 100th anniversary on February 1, 2060.

It is our goal to keep the Harris Teeter legacy alive. From this point forward, the

Legacy Committee will continue to fill these files on an annual basis with

information and material we think will be of interest for the next anniversary book.

On Harris Teeter’s 100th anniversary, I will be 99 years old, if I’m still around.

(My great-grandmother lived to be 102, so I just might have a chance.) I would be

happy to assist with the legacy project, assuming I’d have time in my busy schedule.
