Understanding your Academic Record
Grade Point Average (GPA) Average of a student’s grades starting with freshman
year Based on a 4.0 scale (A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0)
Generally the most important criteria for college admission is your GPA
Weighted and Unweighted GPA Honors, Dual Enrollment, and AP Classes are
weighted 1 pt. in our school district Class Rank
Where a student stands academically in relation to the other members of their graduating class. Based on weighted GPA
i.e. 20/150 . . . . Top 13% of class
Understanding your Academic Record – Cont’d
High School Transcript Official record of a student’s academic
achievement All courses are listed with grades
Repeated classes will use only the highest grade in the GPA calculation
Shows cumulative GPA, class rank Test scores are not included on
transcripts sent to colleges
College Admissions Criteria Admissions criteria will vary from school to
school. Colleges will use some, if not all of the below: GPA SAT / ACT scores Strength of class schedule Class rank Extra-curricular Activities /
Awards/Volunteer Service Essays Recommendations Interview
Academic GPA State University System (SUS) of Florida
11 public universities Colleges recalculate Academic GPA
.5 weight for Honors and DE 1.0 weight for AP
Most SUS will recalculate GPA based on all academic classes.
Colleges want to see that students have succeeded in taking the most challenging classes available, i.e. Honors, DE, AP
Being Successful in College Not only can course work affect college access, but it can
affect COLLEGE SUCCESS Schedule 4 years of academic courses that will help you to be
successful in college! STATISTICS*
Advanced math courses (beyond Algebra II, i.e. Trig., Pre-Calc., etc.) more than doubles the odds that a student will graduate from a 4-year college.
Taking AP courses is more strongly correlated with completion of a bachelor’s degree than with college access.
What does this mean? While Advanced Math courses and AP courses may help with getting
into college, these courses are MORE important in helping students be successful in college.
