This week is George Whyte Week at LCHS.

This week is George Whyte Week atLCHS. GeorgeWhyte is a Founding Fatherand one of America’s founding teachers. Hewas Virginia’s foremost classical scholar, teacher of Thomas Jefferson, Virginia Deanof Lawyers, and the nation’s first college lawprofessor, among many other positions ofsignificance. George Wythe's signature is first amongthe Virginia signatures on the Declaration ofIndependence. He was so highly respectedby his fellow Virginians that the other

delegates left a space so that his signature would appear first, as he was absent from themeeting the day they signed the document. It does not appear that John Hancock got thememo. Jefferson learned the law from Wythe, and, in a manner of speaking, Wythe'ssignature on the Declaration was a teacher's endorsement of his pupil's finest brief.Among Wythe's other law pupils were John Marshall, perhaps the greatest chief justice ofthe United States, and Henry Clay, who was arguably the most significant member ofCongress in the 19th century.

From Board of DirectorsDo you know how the money flows? The Core Knowledge Charter School Foundation (Foundation) was established as aColorado nonprofit corporation to receive grants and donations for the benefit of LibertyCommon School and Liberty Common High School (Liberty). The Foundation is the formalholder of Liberty’s Internal Revenue Code section 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization status. The high-quality education Liberty provides cannot be achieved from the operating budgetalone; therefore, it is essential for Liberty to raise additional funds each year for the manyschool-wide needs that are not covered by our general operating budget. The Foundation isthe entity that receives the funds in order to separate assets purchased with private fundsfrom assets purchased with public funds. The Foundation reimburses Liberty forexpenditures and/or makes direct purchases on behalf of Liberty as directed by the Board ofDirectors. Use Amazon Smiles and King Soopers to support Liberty – Please! At the beginning of the year you should have received a King Soopers gift card, which canbe loaded at any King Soopers and used for both gas and groceries. When paying with thisgift card, King Soopers donates 5% of your purchase to Liberty. If you need anextra/replacement card, stop by the front office. You can also help Liberty through Amazon Smiles when you choose Core KnowledgeCharter School Foundation as the recipient. AmazonSmile Foundation will donate 0.5% ofyour purchase to Liberty through the Core Knowledge Charter School Foundation. To learnmore and set up your account go to www.amazon.com. Value of reading great books: Mature literacy develops as students become acquainted with a broad and rich body ofknowledge and become familiar with many well-written, diverse and meaningful works ofliterature. The literature suggested by the Core Knowledge Sequence, as well as otherliterature that will be introduced, is chosen not only for its place in the core body ofknowledge, its multi-cultural representation, and its rich use of language, but also because itprovides access to deeper meaning of universal human problems, particularly those whichpreoccupy children’s minds. To develop mature literacy, Liberty faculty and Academic Advisory Committee are verydeliberate in selecting books that will expose children to literature that they might nototherwise encounter. The books are intended to nudge students toward higher levels, notjust in matters of syntax and vocabulary, but also in sophistication of plot, characterdevelopment, conflict and resolution, and the sustained reading of lengthy works rather thansimply excerpts. Exposure to this type of literature aids in the development of our students thought andwriting skills, which results in the increased potential for their future success.

From Mr. Lovely, LCHS Assistant Principal

JH Mission Impastabowl. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to attend thisFriday's (11/3/17) junior-high event from 6:30-9pm where you will enjoy snacks, spy gamesand many other fun activities. Mission Impastabowl is a game of strategy and all around funwhere students (agents and guards) sneak around the school at night to get to specifieddestinations where bowls of pasta are hidden throughout the building. The goal is for agentsto get one piece of pasta to the next station without being caught by the guards lurkingaround the school with flashlights. When agents transport pieces of pasta through all six

stations into the final bowl, that counts as points for the agents. If guards catch agents, theyneed to turn over their pieces of pasta, which count as points for the guards. The team withthe most points at the end of a round is declared the victor. The cost of this fabulous junior-high event is only $5. Dressing in all black clothing is advantageous; free-dress-day rulesapply. See Skyler Mayse or Jett Nielsen with questions.

Early Action Application Deadlines. Early action can be a great option if you've doneyour college research and are prepared with all the different parts of your application by theNovember deadline. Data shows that a greater percentage of early action candidates getaccepted than regular decision candidates. However, this higher admission rate may reflectthe competitiveness of early action applicants, rather than suggest that applying early givesyou a special advantage.

A good rule of thumb to go by is this: apply early if you're organized and prepared with astrong application. Wait until regular decision if your application would be stronger with acouple more months of preparation. Your highest priority should be to send the bestapplication you can.

The most common deadlines for early action are November 1 and November 15. You'lltypically hear back from your college in mid-December. Hopefully, the news makes for ahappy new year.

Even though you hear back early, you're not obligated to respond to an offer of acceptanceany earlier than the national response date, which is May 1st. You can hang onto thatacceptance letter while you wait to hear back from all the colleges you applied to. Then youcan compare offers and financial aid packages once you've received all your admissionsdecisions. (www.prepscholar.com)
