CLASS THREE

So many people don’t start a website because they don’t know where to start, and they think it will cost a bazillion dollars. I’m here to tell you that’s just not true, and that there’s another way. That your website can be fun and DOABLE!

Questionnaire time! Yay!

Option A Option BCan you spend money on hosting + a theme? (This doesn’t have to break the bank!)

Do you have basic tech skills, or can you/do you have the time to learn a little tech stuff?

Do you want the most powerful blogging and website platform out there?

Do you want to get started on a site that has lasting potential, that can grow and change as your biz evolves?

Do you want a Shining Biz + Life Academy course-supported platform (The Academy has a How To Create a Wordpress Website course)?

Would you prefer something that is free – at least to start with?

Do you need something as super-simple as possible?

Do you need something really, really fast, like YESTERDAY? (As in: you’ve promised to send someone your website link + intend to make your website before you send them the link...)

Page 6: CLASS THREE - Amazon S3 · 2016-02-06 · 4 CLASS THREE 3 CLASS THREE So many people don’t start a website because they don’t know where to start, and they think it will cost

| CLASS THREE 4

ANSWERED OPTION A?

• Buy hosting + get onto Wordpress.• Wordpress is an extremely powerful + growing platform that 50% of all

websites on the internet use. • There is a mahoooooosive amount of support + so many tool options for

you if you choose Wordpress. It’s basically all you’ll need, like, EVER if you choose it – if you want to change how your website looks, or what it does later, you’re set.

• There’s also a Shining Biz + Life Academy course on how to set up your Wordpress website, because we’re useful like that!

ANSWERED OPTION B?

• Build a website through Weebly or Wix.com...Or, if you want to pay for this option, you could use Squarespace.com.

**Disclaimer for Option B:

This can look like a great option for starting out, but...and it’s a BIG BUT...Down the track you’ll want to change your website. You might want to add functionality to your shopping cart. You might want to make it look more YOU. You might want to break free of the templates and branch out into a site that sparkles with YOU-ness!

With Wordpress, this is doable with minimum fuss. You can do these things pretty easily (or a designer can!). With the drag-and-drop template website builders, you can end up a little stuck. They don’t always work the way you’d like them to.

And you might end up wanting to transition your site to Wordpress anyway. People can struggle to make the transition, which is not always easy to do for yourself.

Page 7: CLASS THREE - Amazon S3 · 2016-02-06 · 4 CLASS THREE 3 CLASS THREE So many people don’t start a website because they don’t know where to start, and they think it will cost

| CLASS THREE 54

So that’s the goods on what you’re getting into if you choose something other than my beloved Wordpress...but ultimately gorgeous one, it’s UP TO YOU.

You might want the simplicity of a drag-and-drop for now, and know you’ll figure out Wordpress when it’s time. That is also Okay, lovely.

The one piece of advice that always applies?

Do what works for you NOW. Don’t put it off.

I’ll explain the two options above + share my best tips for both in this class!

| CLASS THREE 6

I started my blog in 2004 using a free blog hosted on Blogger. It sat at turquoisejourney.blogspot.com.

In 2005, I decided I wanted a website + blog that sat at my own domain, so I bought website hosting and a domain name, and used Blogger to push onto my website (so my blog sat at www.leonielife.com/journal.html) and used FrontPage to create my website.

In 2006, FrontPage was then made defunct (boo!), so I created a website + blog using Weebly.

In 2009, I decided I wanted a more powerful blogging platform, so I paid for a website designer + started to use Wordpress. I’ve never looked back. In 2012, I needed a more powerful + spacious home for my website, so I upgraded to hosting my site with a dedicated server company and engaged a brilliant graphic designer + web coding empress to make my online home even more gorgeous!

In 2015, my team and I rebuilt my website and the Shining Biz + Life Academy from the ground up, a re-launch that saw me employ a full-time coder (in fact, I employed several in the lead up to launch), to get it all looking and functioning exactly how I envisioned it.

WANT TO KNOW THE BORING SNORING DETAILS OF THE BLOGGING PLATFORMS

I’VE USED?

| CLASS THREE 76

All you need to do is decide what you can do right now. You can change it later when the time is right.

Shining Business Tip

And like a true online entrepreneur, I totally agonised over all these decisions. But if you look at the progression, it was just me, doing what I needed to do each time, decision after decision after decision.

Guess who the technical details are interesting to?

Only me. (And you, ‘cause you’re here.)

I mention this because it doesn’t really matter to anyone but you. If your peeps can see your website + do what they went there to do (read a blog post, sign up for your list, buy the thing you’re selling) then it’s done its job. If it does it easily and looks good too? You’ve nailed it!

Remember too: there are a bazillion super successful bloggers who use basic blogging services like Typepad and Blogger. There are a million paths to success. My advice is to get started using either Wordpress or a template website.

(Remember that Grant has made you a special “How To Create a Wordpress Website” course that is available in the Shining Biz + Life Academy to help you get your site up and running!)

I’ll go through getting started with both template website builders AND Wordpress next, so you can see what you need to do.

Page 10: CLASS THREE - Amazon S3 · 2016-02-06 · 4 CLASS THREE 3 CLASS THREE So many people don’t start a website because they don’t know where to start, and they think it will cost

| CLASS THREE 8

I used to recommend these template websites a LOT more than I do now. The simple fact is that the power + ease of using Wordpress has increased so much

over the years since I first talked about making websites that template and drag-and-drop website builders are being left in the dust.

BUT! If you really really do want to go for this option, then do it. A website up and running is better than you sitting on the decision + not making progress.

TEMPLATE WEBSITES: WEEBLY.COM, WIX.COM (OR SQUARESPACE.COM IF YOU’RE OK TO PAY FOR THIS OPTION)

The biggest boo point you will find straight away is this: you have pre-installed designs.

Your website won’t look as spectacularly YOU-ish as

Wordpress can. Wordpress has a whole lot more plugins to make it more powerful, pretty + functional.

Easy to set up on your own Basic account is FREE!

You can get your own domain name with a pro account (it’s not super expensive at all)

You can have a blog and website in one

Comes with pre-installed designs so you just click and play...no designing necessary!

Pros... Cons...

HOW TO GET STARTED WITH ATEMPLATE SITE:

Head to Weebly orWix.com (or Squarespace.com if you’re happy to opt for a paid option)

Sign up for an account Choose a design

Publish your site!

And darling...if simple + cheaper + easy is the right route for you right now, I whole- heartedly recommend you go for it. You can always change it later, if you evolve out of your current choice. It can be a huge faff to do this, but it is also part of being online + working out the internet. It’s what we do now. It’s all part of the glorious interwebs where we dabble + try + then decide that something needs changing, so we go + dabble + try some more.

Just make sure that what you do will serve you NOW, and for a while.

Then go and DO IT.

It is far far FAR better for you to start now on abasic website than spend the next six months waiting for the time/

money/effort to get things perfect and not launching anything.

Give yourself a deadline...and GET published! It’s the only way for your business to start gathering traction and energy!

WORDPRESS.ORG

It’s powerful. It is THE most used website platform in the world. Thirty-nine percent of the largest websites globally use it. That’s HUGE in internet terms. And there are reasons that these people use Wordpress: because it works; because the more people use it, the more helpful + specific the support forums and support community get. There are tutorials out the wazoo on how to use different aspects of Wordpress. It’s an ever-growing circle of YAY-ness, basically! There are thousands of free + premium plugins + Website themes that you can use.

With the Plugins: These are free and premium tools that you can download and install into your Wordpress site to make it even more powerful. It’s like blog bling. Functional blog bling. Stuff that can make it easier for you to get certain things working on your website. Opt-in boxes, popups on exit/entry, sidebar videos, shopping carts, even analytics statistics so you can see your visitors’ every move. Massive, massive functional boosts for your website

Pros...

Wordpress comes with a steep-ish learning curve. If you’re not super-techy, you might have to strap on your Learning Underoos + get OK with educating yourself.

You have more choices, therefore it’s more comfusing if you’ve got Shiny Object Syndrome and have trouble when confronted with loads of options.

Because it’s so huge, they always have a ton of development going on and it creates an upgrade/update cycle that can be hard to keep up with. (But don’t let that scare you off! It’s learnable + doable!)

You might need a website designer to create a design that looks like you – IF you decide you can’t swing it yourself.

You’ll need to buy hosting + your own domain name.

Cons...

Decided Wordpress is the right thing for you right now?

Yay! Let’s go!

Page 14: CLASS THREE - Amazon S3 · 2016-02-06 · 4 CLASS THREE 3 CLASS THREE So many people don’t start a website because they don’t know where to start, and they think it will cost

| CLASS THREE 12

Domain names

To get started with Wordpress, you need your own domain name + website hosting, then you need to install Wordpress.

To explain these as simply as possible if you’re confused by their difference: Your domain name is the thing that looks like yourmagnificentwork.com, and the hosting is the space where your website sits and gets visited by all your adoring fans.

The domain name is your street address, the website hosting is the land your house sits on. Your Wordpress website and all its pages is your house – the thing you show people when they come around to visit.

Now, how to get the street address and land for your great big dream website? Grant recommends buying a domain name separately from your hosting. There are companies that offer both, but you get far more control over what you can do with your domain if you own it outright and THEN get your hosting sorted. So: buy your domain name (try Hover.com for domain names).

Website hosting

Now organise your website hosting (try BlueHost for good hosting), which for a starter website won’t actually cost you much per month.

I used to host my website with BlueHost, and was really happy with them. Because my traffic’s so huge now, I use a dedicated server company – but that’s for down the track gorgeous one!

GETTING STARTED WITH WORDPRESS

Page 15: CLASS THREE - Amazon S3 · 2016-02-06 · 4 CLASS THREE 3 CLASS THREE So many people don’t start a website because they don’t know where to start, and they think it will cost

| CLASS THREE 1312

You’ll need to then point your domain name at your hosting service.

Now it might sound like I’ve just spoken another language, but it’s like getting things in order in a big old library. You get your author name (your domain name) + then look it up in the catalogue so you can tell which bit of the library (which bit of the internet) to go to so you can find the book (website) you want. There will be help available from your hosting company on how to do this, or they can even do it for you if you ask them.

Lemme say it again: it is all learnable, it is all doable.

It is the way of the future, but you are not behind! All you need to do is do the next thing. One thing at a time + your website will SHINE!!

They have one-press Wordpress install. So you can just install it straight from their servers, which helps enormously when you’re faced with tech stuff.

Their customer service is very helpful and responsive + their downtime is minimal/non-existent.

They use a cPanel standardised control panel. This is brilliant because it’s an industry standard, so if you ever move from them, you’ll still be able to do all the things you’ve learned how to do!

When your traffic grows so that you need dedicated servers, THEN you get to move companies and/or find some solution that works for you. You’ll know when it’s time.

They don’t cost $$huge per month. WINNAH!!

Bluehost is great because:

Page 16: CLASS THREE - Amazon S3 · 2016-02-06 · 4 CLASS THREE 3 CLASS THREE So many people don’t start a website because they don’t know where to start, and they think it will cost

| CLASS THREE 14

Install WordPress

If you’re with BlueHost, Wordpress is a one-press install. You just click the button and follow the instructions. Easy peasy!

If you’re with another hosting company, then they may also have one-press installation for Wordpress, because Wordpress is just such a popular + powerful platform. You can either search their support forums for how to do it, or get in contact with the helpdesk for support.

Then, once you have Wordpress installed, you’re ready to PLAY!! WHEEEEE!!!

Branding Your Website

Your next job is to get your website looking good, m’kay?

This is where we often get derailed as beginning biz goddesses. It’s easy to spend OOOOODLES of time faffing about with colours and fonts and designs when what you really need is something that shouts “you!!”

It can be hard when you’re starting out to know just what it is that this will be.

But don’t worry!! Your Biz Goddess Guide Leonie has your back!

There is one thing you can do to make the whole thing easier, lovebug. And that’s to start with a logo. Draw your own, get it designed, it doesn’t matter – but once you have an actual logo, you’ll be MUCH further along the design journey than if you just choose a font, upload a pic that looks ok and go from there.

If you have a little money to throw at your new biz, then get help to get a logo designed. You’ll end up with several files you can use, and can ask for the colour numbers too, so that you can use them in your website design. This way you start off with a look that is cohesive AND you. The logo design process can be really helpful in driving the whole look and feel of your website, and a good logo will last you for AGES.

You can look on websites like Fiverr.com and Upwork.com to hire someone, or if you have a graphic designer friend, hit ‘em up for some work! Just make sure you DO IT. (Take it from me, getting it done is easier if you...DO IT.)

Page 17: CLASS THREE - Amazon S3 · 2016-02-06 · 4 CLASS THREE 3 CLASS THREE So many people don’t start a website because they don’t know where to start, and they think it will cost

| CLASS THREE 1514

Designing Your WebsiteIf you want to design your own blog/website, woo hoo! I’ve done that many times, and it can be really fun to learn how. It does, however, take a little bit of time and software (i.e. Photoshop).

One theme that Grant and I recommend in the Shining Biz + Life Academy course on How to Create a Website with Wordpress is the Divi theme. It’s a flexible and very customisable theme that will get you started and also expand as you need to. There are a few other options similar out there, so have a good search around and see what you like.

When I first started with Wordpress, I hired a designer to create a website design for me. I had a bit of a bummer experience with it – I didn’t get the design when promised. I’m really grateful for it though, it made me realise I wanted to include more of my art and my me-ness into my website than they were going to.

So I hand-drew my whole website. Then I got a good friend to code it for me. Voila! A magical website design that I loved!

That lasted until 2015, when I had my whole site redesigned to an even MORE “me” iteration. We all grow and change, and your website will too. You’ll love it, then over time, you’ll see things that you’d like changed. It’s all part of the evolution of how YOU do biz online!

Page 18: CLASS THREE - Amazon S3 · 2016-02-06 · 4 CLASS THREE 3 CLASS THREE So many people don’t start a website because they don’t know where to start, and they think it will cost

| CLASS THREE 16

1. If you need a designer, hire someone who has been recommended by someone you know. Remember to get a logo first if you can, so that you have something to base your website design on.

2. Think about ways you can incorporate your you-ness into your design.

3. Be clear about what you want with both the logo and the website design – know what colours you like, what website designs you like and what you are looking for. The clearer you are, the better the design will be (and the less painful the design process will be!)

You can buy or find ready made themes (http://wordpress.org/themes/) for your Wordpress website. Themes are the design style of your website and there are as many themes out there available as there are stars in the sky.

I still recommend using the Divi theme for Wordpress, from Elegant themes. It’s not too hard to customise, but it’ll also just work out of the box, which is what you want when you’re starting out as a biz goddess!

If you need extra special features to sparkle up your website and make it sing, you can check out Code Canyon, which has heaps of plugins to choose from (mostly paid) to make your site do just about anything. It’s heaps of fun!

How To Find The Right Designer + Design For You

Some other ways for you to get a design that shrieks LUSCIOUS you-ness:

Page 19: CLASS THREE - Amazon S3 · 2016-02-06 · 4 CLASS THREE 3 CLASS THREE So many people don’t start a website because they don’t know where to start, and they think it will cost

NOW WHAT?

Are you feeling about a thousand percent overwhelmed by all that stuff I just laid down?

That’s totally, totally cool sweetie.

You’re not supposed to be able to *get* and *implement* all of this stuff all at once.

You don’t need to treat this as a huge To Do List to beat yourself up with. Just pick and choose what you need to get done today. And then do it.

Choose what is right for you right now to do. Don’t let the Big Overwhelm Of Everything stop you from starting right now. You can always shift, change and

fix later on, once you’re up and running.

I hope this information helps you in creating your website for your great big, glorious biz dream. You are magic. You deserve it!

All this tech stuffis LEARNABLE and DOABLE!

Shining Business Tip

I hear this a lot, sweetheart. And I get it. You don’t feel super comfortable with computers, technology, the internet + all that stuff. This is fine. No-one’s born knowing this stuff.

You might be feeling afraid that you’re not going to be able to do it – that somehow you are limited, that you’ll never be able to work it out, that you’re behind the eight ball already. You might feel afraid and like you are the only one who doesn’t feel super comfortable in the tech environment. And you might feel concerned about how long it’s going to take you to learn what you need to learn.

Here’s my secret:I was not always uber comfortable with computers (just like I wasn’t born brilliant/comfortable at business).

But I DO know how to educate myself, and I know how to align my actions with my intentions. So if I need to learn something, I make a plan and then DO IT.

I don’t dabble in code anymore – I know my own limitations and it’s also not where I want to spend my time and energy – but back when I needed to know code, I learned it.

“BUT I’M A TECHNOPHOBE...ALL THIS COMPUTER STUFF FREAKS ME OUT!”

Page 21: CLASS THREE - Amazon S3 · 2016-02-06 · 4 CLASS THREE 3 CLASS THREE So many people don’t start a website because they don’t know where to start, and they think it will cost

| CLASS THREE 1918

1. Google it. There are buttloads of tutorials available everywhere on the internet to fix any problem you face. Seriously. The internet is DA BOMB when it comes to learning!

2. Check out the tutorials of the service you are using (i.e. hosting sites/website builders/etc)they usually have great mini videos on how to get stuff done.

3. If you really really can’t get stuff sorted and want to invest, hire someone from Upwork.com, Fiverr.com, or the gazillion other outsourcing sites in the glorious interwebs.

WHERE THERE IS A WILLTHERE IS A WAY!

Once upon a time... I was terrified of the tech aspects of websites. And then I kept playing + learning + growing until it became easy for me. We all have to begin somewhere. Everything is learnable + doable!

If you don’t know how to do something, here’s what you do:

BRILLIANTLY FOR

(Please for ze love of God, DO them!)

Use a font that is easy to read (you can use cursive font for headings, but stick to plainer fonts for paragraphs.) Use dark text (e.g: black) on light (e.g: white) background. It is proven that this combo is MUCH easier to read than white on dark backgrounds. Make it easy for your peeps!

Do not use centre alignment – left alignment is easier to read.

People read 25% slower on websites than a book. Make it as easy as possible for people to read your wonderful words. Don’t be too wordy.

Chunk your text into smaller paragraphs that are clear and concise.

Use headings to draw readers into your lovely words.

Use bold, italics + quote boxes to highlight important information.

Don’t leave me swimming in a sea of text. The Leonie will click away. I like reading, but have the attention span of a very cute little bird that just spotted a shiny thing in the next tree.

Keep practising. Keep writing. Keep pressing the publish button.

Better to have it out than in !!!

HERE’S MY TOP 8 TIPS FOR WRITING BRILLIANTLY FOR THE WEB:

Writing for the web? It’s a little bit different from writing a book.

You want to do it in a way that is effective. That helps your gorgeous tribe to read your goodness easily + happily.

| CLASS THREE 22

MAKE YOUR WEBSITEWONDERFUL WORKSHEET

Ask your fellow Academy members in the Business Goddess Mastermind Forum for their most honest review of your website.

What problems do they mention? Then fix any problem areas they mention.

Get someone who’s never seen your website before to visit your website, and watch them as they do so. Are they confused? What would help them? Do they know what you want them to do on each page? Ask them to perform certain actions (sign up for your list, follow you on social media, buy your product, etc) and see if they can figure out how.

Fix the things they say are confusing!

| CLASS THREE 2322

Check out other websites that you like visiting – and notice exactly what helps you feel at home. How can you create the same effect on your website (in your you-style of course!) How can you make your website feel like your home, your soul, your energy? Every time I open up my own website, I get a little smile on my face. The pictures, the colours – everything – it all lights me up in the best possible way. That’s what you need to be doing. You’ll attract your tribe with your website that sings to your soul.

LIST 5 THINGS YOU COULD DO TO MAKE YOUR WEBSITE SHINE MORE LIKE YOU:

Decide: What ONE thing you want a new reader of your website to do. (Do you want them to: sign up to your mailing list? Buy one of your products? Follow you on a social platform?)

How can you guide them to do that? (I.e. have a signup form on the top of your website, social media follow buttons under each blog post, or large Buy Now buttons easily visible?)

Shopping carts enable you to receive da cashola! It’s your cash register and your money pot. It enables you to accept sales from all over the world.

The two shopping cart tools I recommend are:

Paypal

WooCommerce plugin on Wordpress

There are different benefits to each.

For example, PayPal doesn’t cost anything upfront (they simply take money out per transaction) and you can use it to receive money even if you don’t have a website yet. Or, you can use their special buttons to receive money without a formal shopping cart, which is great if you’re setting up with coaching, or online readings/kinesiology/energy healing etc, where you’re offering a fixed-price service that people can buy by clicking a button.

You can use PayPal on a template website, OR on Wordpress.

If you’re on Weebly.com or Wix.com, they will have business templates for you to use to set up your products and services. PayPal will integrate with it – just follow the instructions to set it up. if simple + cheaper + easy is the right route for you right now, I whole- heartedly recommend you go for it. You can always change it later, if you evolve out of your current choice. It can be a huge faff to do this, but it is also part of being online + working out the internet. It’s what we do now. It’s all part of the glorious interwebs where we dabble + try + then decide that something needs changing, so we go + dabble + try some more.

WooCommerce for Wordpress is free if you have a theme that is properly coded and will work in a standardised way with that theme. It has loads of support to help you out if you need it, which is BRILLIANT. If or when you need added functionality, CodeCanyon has loads of plugins with different functions that you can extend it with, for $$notmany.

**Note: if you JUST use WooCommerce, without PayPal, you’ll need an SSL certificate for your website that you get via your website hosting company. That is something that shows people that you’re a secure website where people’s details are going to be secure. Contact your host and ask them if you’re taking this option and let them look after you!

Start with PayPal and WooCommerce for Wordpress. They work well together, and have plenty of space in them for you + your biz to grow.

Neither WooCommerce nor PayPal have monthly fees, though PayPal will take out a fee from your transactions (minimal), and WooCommerce will cost you if you take up some extra features. These shouldn’t be necessary when you’re just starting out, though.

You can integrate them with Ebay.com + Etsy.com.

The free version with WooCommerce comes with a digital download functionality – which is super useful if you’re making e-books or e-courses.

You can use WooCommerce with PayPal as well. Woo can be your shopping cart, with PayPal as your payment gateway! WOOOOOHOOO! Now you’re really getting moving!

And here’s a big one: many peeps won’t buy unless there is the option to pay with PayPal. I’m happy to click a couple of buttons to pay for stuff with PayPal. If I find a shopping cart that doesn’t have PayPal, and requires me to go find my credit card + type in all the numbers? More often than not, I don’t buy. People may not buy if you don’t have the PayPal option.

MY RECOMMENDATION?

You can sign up for free for a PayPal account by heading over to http://PayPal.com (or http://PayPal.com.au – they have PayPal in many countries, find yours!).

You will need to sign up for a Business Account. Be prepared for a short wait – they usually need to verify your account, send you a letter/call you/check your bank account is correct before you can get started. Sign up as soon as you can to get it all ready + waiting for you.

If you don’t like PayPal, try Stripe instead (https://stripe.com/au). Stripe is another payment option to investigate.

Need more help with working out PayPal? Check out their Help Centre, or try their customer service contact info. They usually work things out pretty quickly.

Some countries may not be able to pay if they have a high fraud rate (for example, Mongolia + some countries in Africa may not be able to buy your goodies.)

Once you are flying in Business Goddess land, you can upgrade to PayPal Payments Pro. You pay a monthly fee, and it means you can host the checking out process on your site, without the usual significant amount of PayPal branding. It also means peeps can pay with credit cards if that’s what they want. Using PayPal Pro often brings an increase in sales that make it more than worth the investment.

First of all, make sure you have WooCommerce downloaded + installed on your website. If you’re having trouble with this, either visit your hosting company’s help or support forum to find the answers, or contact your website hosting company, and they can help you.

Go to Settings -> Checkout + set up your PayPal as what WooCommerce uses when people make a purchase from you.

List your products in WooCommerce using the Products menu item in the plugin.

Then you’re DONE! WEEEEOOOOOO!!

That first reason? That’s the main reason you want to set up with WooCommerce. Get set up so that people can send you money!!

Remember WooCommerce is the shopping cart plugin for Wordpress. When you download, install and configure it, you can then really customise it (using WooCommerce plugins) to do what you want: Straight away you can handle product/service sales on your website (with PayPal as the payment gateway)

With the right WooCommerce plugin (which you may choose to get down the track) it can manage bookings, subscriptions, memberships, Facebook stores, your own affiliate sales for products and services you’re an affiliate for – while giving the peeps who buy through you a shopping cart experience, and MUCH more.

WHAT NEXT?

Remember that if you use PayPal for your checkout, then you won’t need SSL on your site, because PayPal takes care of the security of peeps’ information for you.

Unless you get the WooCommerce affiliates plugin (currently USD$59 at time of writing), you’ll need to pay your affiliates manually each month. If you do this, it’s muchos important that you put it in your diary for the 7th or 8th of each month. It’s easy to forget, but so important you don’t!

You can use WooCommerce to sell anything – from physical goods to coaching services to e-courses to e-books. Integrate it with your mailing list provider to send automatic, instant emails out (this is covered in the next section!).

Let me tell you a lil story about mailing lists.

Once upon a time (many years ago!) I was using an Excel spreadsheet to keep track of my mailing list. I thought it was saving me money, and to be honest, I didn’t know how else to do it.Then I learned the kinda hard way why you should have a mailing list provider:

6 reasons to have a mailing list provider(aka why NOT to do it yourself!)

1.This is the important one: you don’t want your personal email address to look like a spamming email to servers. And if you start sending emails to large groups of people regularly, this happens way too easily.

I found out the hard way that if you send an email to over 500 people, Gmail will close your account for 24 hours. Ark!

2. Once your email address has been marked as a spammer it’s much more likely to end up in your peeps’spam folder rather than where they can, you know, actually READ IT.

3. It was getting really sucky to update the file manually whenever anyone signed up. At a certain point sweetie, you are going to get busy with your business. You need to delegate mundane tasks to the Automatic Gods wherever you can. A mailing list provider will do this for you

So there you go my darlings. A very good list of reasons to use a mailing list provider. Stuff I’ve discovered my making mistakes. But I’m totally happy to make mistakes so you don’t have to!

If you’ve got a big dream, and you’re going to send out emails to a mailing list, USE A MAILING LIST SERVICE PROVIDER FROM THE GET-GO!!

At a certain point sweetie, you are going to get busy with your business. You need to

Shining Business Tip

4. Whenever anyone wanted to sign up to be on my mailing list and get my newsletters, they had to email me with “Subscribe” in the email heading.

Handy hint: People are way less likely to sign up for your newsletter if you make them work for it. Just let them fill out a lil sign-up box and be done with it, mmmkay? You want to make it as easy as possible for your beautiful people to hear from you! They want to hear from you! Just make it easy on them!!!

5. When you finally do transfer over to a mailing list provider, you’ll lose peeps. A LOT of them. When I finally migrated to using AWeber as a mailing list Automatic God, I lost about half my mailing list. *sob* I like to call these the Great Mailing List Casualties of 2008. RIP, mailing list switch casualties. I miss you!

6. Mailing list providers let you do special things. Like set up auto responders. Auto responders are glorious things that mean you can:

Get a series of emails sent whenever anyone signs up, without having to actually send them yourself!

You can set up special lists for your e-courses, and get your e-course emails sent out automagically on time. THIS IS SUPER HELPFUL, peeps. Trust the Leonie!

WHICH MAILING LIST PROVIDERSHOULD I USE?

If you’re growing fast or are ready to upgrade to a paid option, check out ActiveCampaign. Their setup is sleek, works well + is growing fast, which is great, because when something has heaps of people using it, it gets better! And the support community for it gets better + more helpful. And it just lifts the game all round! There are a LOT of things you can do with ActiveCampaign at present – automation in every way, not much $$ per month (cheaper annually), loads of campaign support and individuation – and they have plans to make it even better! BOOYAH!

MailChimp is free for lists under 2,000 people. A lot of my business friends adore them. They have beautiful templates to use, and have loads of great vids on how to use their platform. Their support centre is incredibly helpful too, with lots of clear answers on how to do stuff.

When I first started with my very first e-course, I didn’t know about WooCommerce (or e-junkie, which is what I started out with once I realised I needed something to help me out). Someone would buy the e-course, and I’d get an email notifying me of the sale. Then I’d add them to my list, and email them back their download instructions. It was incredibly time consuming. It drove me bonkerdoodles.

And then someone told me about e-junkie, and I heard angels. Now, e-junkie is WAY superseded by WooCommerce + other shopping carts with great functionality. WooCommerce is the way to go as far as I’m concerned. Heaps of options, loads of support and integrates with mailing list providers. Happy campers all round!

Time saving + sanity saving MAGIC!

Go get set up, dearest!

And HAVE FUN,

for ding dang’s sake!

HOW TO CHARGE

FOR YOUR WORK

Page 38: CLASS THREE - Amazon S3 · 2016-02-06 · 4 CLASS THREE 3 CLASS THREE So many people don’t start a website because they don’t know where to start, and they think it will cost

When you start out, it can be really, really hard knowing how to charge for your work.

Do you pull a number out of thin air? Or do you work out your costs + projections - deductions + profits x headaches induced by lefty-brained logistics = perfect price?

This isn’t just about pricing your work. This is about every time we need to put a number value on our work. You don’t have to be an artist to have this question. Maybe you’re a healer. Or a coach. Or a massage therapist. Or a babysitter. Or a designer. Or any kind of businesswoman, really.

So let’s circle... and talk Sacred Pricing.

THE TIME I DIDN’T HONOUR SACRED PRICING

So, once upon a time, Leonie didn’t sell her artwork. She gave it away. Whenever anyone mentioned they liked her artwork, she gave it to them. Even relative strangers.

Why did Leonie do this? Because she thought that was the nice thing to do. Because she loved making the artwork, so she wanted to share it freely. Because she was uncomfortable with putting a price on her gifts.

All the above is true. I felt fairly okay about the whole arrangement - but I had little bits of sadness about it. Like the part where I felt a little bit used up by it. And the part where I felt like I hadn’t honoured my paintings properly. And like I’d just given away my babies to families that I wasn’t really sure about.

I was starting to feel in my soul that maybe this wasn’t the right way to do it anymore. Like there had to be a better way for me, for my spirit, and for my art.

THE WORDS THAT CHANGED ME.

As they say – when the student is ready, the teacher appears. One twilight, I was driving back from a labyrinth walk. It had been my first outing with my women’s circle, and I was bundled up in the back of a car with my two mentors in the front.

Deb turned to Ellanita and said “Leonie’s been having problems charging for her artwork. I told her you would be the right one to speak to about that.” Ellanita, a beautiful, silver-haired, blue-eyed woman. turned to me, and asked, “What is this problem Leonie? What are you charging right now?”

I blushed. And stammered. I tend to do this when caught off guard by honesty. “Ummm...nothing. I give my art away.” “And why do you do that?” “Because it’s...easier. I don’t have to think about it then. If people want it, they can just have it.”

Our headlights glowed along the stretch of road. We were driving through a large paddock with kangaroos and farm houses and old trees visible through the soft light. Ellanita began to speak, and I listened.

“You must charge for your art. In everything - everything - there needs to be an exchange of energy. An equal one.

One that fills me up. One that fills you up.

If I give you a massage that nourishes and sustains and relaxes you, I ask you for money to nourish and sustain my life too. We must both be involved in the exchange, otherwise it is one sided. We must both be invested, so we both receive value.

Page 40: CLASS THREE - Amazon S3 · 2016-02-06 · 4 CLASS THREE 3 CLASS THREE So many people don’t start a website because they don’t know where to start, and they think it will cost

| CLASS THREE 38

If I do not allow you to pay money for my service, I do a disservice to myself, but also to you. You must contribute too, in order to be fulfilled. You will value the things you pay for more.

And my life will be better because I have helped your life be better. And your life will be better, because you have helped my life be better too. If you choose to ignore this exchange, you are doing both of you a great disservice.

Everything - everything - must be an equal exchange of energy. It is sacred. Money is the manifestation of energy. Money is sacred too.”

– Ellanita Arlee

In everything- everything- there needs to be an exchange of energy. An equal one.

Shining Business Tip

PRICING TO SUSTAIN AND ENRICH YOU...

Since Ellanita spoke those words to me years ago, my mindset about money and charging for my gifts and services changed. It is continually being tweaked, changed and evolved – as most things are in life. As we evolve, so do our attitudes and our insights about the things around us and in us.

Page 41: CLASS THREE - Amazon S3 · 2016-02-06 · 4 CLASS THREE 3 CLASS THREE So many people don’t start a website because they don’t know where to start, and they think it will cost

| CLASS THREE 3938

A little note on gifting.I’m not anti-gifting. What I’m into is giving when it feels conscious and energy-filled from both sides. Sometimes I *still* gift artwork to dear friends and family – but now I only do it because I WANT to do it. Not because I’m uncomfortable with the putting-a-price-on-it part of it. Not because I think I SHOULD. I do it when it’s true for me.

Pricing practically + joyfullyOn a practical level, make sure you include all your costs in your pricing, and then work out if the profit number sustains you.

I remember selling prints as a Christmas special a good many years ago. I forgot to work out the price of postage for the kind of tube I was sending. In the end, I lost $4 for every print I sold. That profit number obviously didn’t sustain me – like, not even close!!

Just remember: every sale has a cost. Write up a scratch list of them, so you know what energy you are truly giving out and receiving in.

Price your services and products so that it sustains and enriches you.

Price so that you feel happy selling at that price. Price so it feels like a true energy

exchange- that what you are giving to another they are giving the same value to you. Price so

your life will feel joyful from it.

What Now?So now you’ve got the goods on how to create your website, what you need to get sorted with to be able to sell from your website and take payment from people, mailing list providers you can choose from so that you can communicate with your tribe, and how to charge for your work.

Don’t swim in overwhelm, dearest!

I know that this can seem like too much to take in at once. But I know that you can do this, because this hippy, spiritual, rainbow unicorn loving chick did it – and if I can do it, YOU can do it too!!

As I always say: just choose the one next thing you need to do, and do that thing. Then do the next thing.

You’ll build your biz, step-by-step-by-step. That’s how it’s done.

Now go, you gorgeous soul, and get started!
