Dear Parent,

Summer Vacations are synonymous with fun, frolic, getting up late in the morning,

playing for longer hours with friends, going for picnics, exploring new places and watching

fun filled shows on television. But, there is a lot more your ward can do to make

vacations more interesting, meaningful and full of fun. Here is a “Summer vacation

Activity Treasure Box”. It will surely mould your ward for a better and successful

forthcoming year.

Few guidelines to make your ward’s long summer break fruitful.

1. “Knowledge is Power”. Therefore encourage your child to cultivate the reading habit

because it not only enhances the knowledge acquired but also develops the vocabulary,

language skills and improves spellings. And also read to your child because it builds

reading skills and increases his/her attention span.

2. “A healthy mind lives in a healthy body”. Encourage your child to go out and play

because sports instill discipline, generate sporting spirits, channelize energies

constructively.

3. Communication skills play a pivotal role in grooming the overall personality of the

children. Converse with your child preferably in English to help him / her get comfortable

with the language. Encourage your child to read children’s magazines like Magic Pot,

Chandamama, Dimdima etc.

4. Spend quality time with your child engaging him / her in activities based on enhancing

his / her powers of observation and imagination.

5. Encourage your child to play board games e.g. Chess, Ludo, Carrom etc.

6. Sensitize your child about the rich culture and heritage by watching different

informative channels like ‘The National Geographic’, Animal Planet etc.

7. Encourage your child to do the activities himself / herself and appoint a specific time to

do homework everyday.

WORKSHEET

Topic – Ozone layer and its depletion

Class – VIII Subject: Science

Read the following paragraph on depletion of ozone layer and answer the questions based on it.

The ozone layer is a layer of the earth’s atmosphere in which most of the atmosphere’s ozone is concentrated. It protects the earth from harmful radiations like high energy UV – radiations from passing through it. Protective role of the Ozone layer in the upper atmosphere is so vital that scientists believe life on earth probably would not have evolved and could not exist today without it. In 1970, scientists discovered that chemicals known as chlorofluorocarbons can reach the stratosphere and destroy the ozone gas . Many common products and appliances such as aerosol spray, air conditioners and refrigerators release CFCs into the atmosphere when manufactured or used. In 1985 ‘scientists discovered that every year, the ozone layer over Antarctica becomes drastically thinner during the southern hemisphere’s spring, which forms an ozone hole over Antarctica. The hole occurs over Antarctica because the extreme cold conditioned help the very high clouds characteristics of that area to form tiny ice particles. When the polar winds blow, the chemicals in the air are trapped in the ozone layer. When the Antarctica spring sun rises in August or September and hits the trapped chemicals, a chain reaction begins in which chemicals such as chlorine and bromine react with ozone and destroy it quickly. When the ozone is depleted, more harmful UV Rays can penetrate the ozone layer and reach the earth surface. This can cause many health problems in humans.

1. How does the ozone layer of atmosphere protects lives on earth?

2. Why is the ozone layer getting depleted?

3. What do you mean by the ozone hole?

4. Can the ozone hole recover?

5. What are the harmful effects of depletion of ozone layer?

PHYSICS 1. Make a collage on the given topic:

2. Make a project on the topic -Pressure

a) Pressure and its unit

b) Types of pressure - solid, liquid, air

c) Solid pressure and its applications in daily life

d) Liquid pressure, its properties and its applications

e) Air pressure, its properties and its applications

3. Do the given assignment in your physics notebook.

1 An archer stretches her bow while taking aim at the target. She then releases the arrow,

which begins to move towards the target. Based on this information, fill up the gaps in the

following statements:

a) To stretch the bow, the archer applies a force that cause a change in its _____________

b) The force applied by the archer to stretch the bow is an example of ______________

c) The type of force responsible for change in state of motion of the arrow is an example

of _____________ force.

d) While the arrow moves towards its target, the forces acting on it are due to _________

and ___________ of air.

2 When is the pressure on ground more - when a man is lying or when a man us standing?

Explain

3 You can fill a bucket from downstairs tap quicker than from an upstairs tap. Why?

4 A rocket has been fired upwards to launch a satellite in the orbit. Name the two forces

acting on the rocket immediately after leaving the launching pad?

5 There is no atmosphere around many planets, then why there is atmosphere around

earth?

6 Why do people with high blood pressure sweat a lot?

7 There is a famous saying in Hindi that a sword cannot replace a needle. Give reason for

the saying in the light of physics?

8 Rahul was impressed by the miracle performed by a person in a fair in their village

when he lied down on a bed of nails. The nails did not hurt him. Rahul narrated the whole

incident to his friend Ramesh. Ramesh explained to him that there is no magic of miracle

here. He can also do that trick.

a) Why did Ramesh say that there is no miracle in this trick? Why the person did not hurt

himself?

b) Which quality is shown by Ramesh here?

BIOLOGY

3D Model of Cell and Cell Organelles

Make 3D models of Cell & Cell organelles using eco-friendly material like paper pulp,

clay etc.

PROCEDURE

Take some waste paper and cut them into small bits. Soak these bits of paper in water for

5-10 days. Make sure that you change the water every day after the paper has become soft

and pulpy take out the water and squeeze the pulp to drain out extra water. Now your

pulp is ready to be used. Mash it to make it smooth and give them shapes of the required

organelle. Keep them to dry in sunlight. After it gets dried up thoroughly paint them

accordingly.
