MAY-AUG 2020 CLUBS & CLASSES
Clubs and classes are open to ALL SKILL LEVELS and we encourage every student to take user classes to become familiar with their machine!
I am hoping by the time you read this, the worst of the COVID-19 pandemic is behind us.
Cathey's has been fortunate to remain open and employ our entire staff during this difficult time to serve our customer’s needs, as well as to support the mask making project. I am proud to share that Cathey's staff, customers, and volunteers have sewn and donated over 20,000 masks for medical professionals, first responders, and law enforcement.
It has been encouraging to see how many new sewers have purchased machines to learn a new skill and volunteer to make masks. Many sewers that had not used their machines have dusted them off and joined the cause. Thank you to everyone that has contributed to this critical cause–we could not do it without you!
We have always offered clubs and classes to inspire and guide sewers to nurture their creativity! Unfortunately, due to social distancing requirements and our customers' well-being, we are suspending classes at all three locations until May 18th. We hope to be able to offer clubs and classes at that time, however, like everything else - that is subject to change. We will inform you of any updates to clubs, classes, and events when necessary. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
Cathey's is committed to staying the course to keep our customers and staff safe and healthy. We will continue to keep our stores clean and provide hand sanitizer for our customers while we practice social distancing and wear masks.
All of us at Cathey’s wish you and your loved ones a safe, healthy, and happy summer.
Thank you,Donny Cathey

Mylar-Appliqued Envelope Covers for 18" x 18"Pillow FormsInstructor: Lorie Manciet Class Fee: $44
Embroidering with mylar as an appliqué allows you to create sparkly designs that give a metallic shimmer without using metallic threads! Mylar, which is traditionally seen as helium balloons and foil gift wrap, is becoming a popular material to use when machine embroidering. In this three-part class, we will embroider two designs, digitized specifically for mylar appliqué projects by Anita Goodesign. The design will be embroidered onto a piece of fabric, which will become the front of an envelope pillow cover, which we will make to fit an 18” x 18” pillow form. The pillow cover is machine-washable in cold water; air-drying is recommended. Since mylar is metallic-based it can even be ironed when using a press cloth.(S) Mon / Jun 22 1:00-3:00(S) Wed / Jul 15 1:00-3:00(S) Thu / Aug 27 1:00-3:00

Luminaire XP1 Playbook Series #1 Instructor: Lorie Manciet Class Fee: $85 for 4 Classes ($25 for 1 class –with available space)
Class #1: Resize OverviewResizing embroidery patterns. Easy peasy – right? While the concept is certainly easy, resizing patterns correctly can make or break your embroidery design (as well as an embroidery needle or two). The Luminaire XP1 Playbook has a chapter devoted to resizing embroidery patterns. Using the exercises provided in the Playbook, together we will experience the pitfalls of incorrectly resizing, and the rewards of correctly resizing embroidery patterns to enhance your embroidery creations.
(S) Fri / May 22 2:00-4:00
Class #2: My Design Center – Freehand DrawingMy Design Center, available on your Luminaire, provides you with tools to truly personalize embroidery designs. In this class, we will explore the capabilities of the Luminaire, using My Design Center, to transform freehand drawings created by yourself, your children, grandchildren, or anyone else from drawings to stitches. In a two-hour class, we will draw an original design directly onto your Luminaire, and end by stitching the pattern onto fabric.
(S) Fri / June 26 2:00-4:00
Class #3: Positioning a Design – Scan Background / Snowman StickersPositioning an embroidery design onto your fabric can make the difference between motionless butterflies and butterflies flitting around a flower, along a border, or wherever you wish to portray. Of course, your creations do not need to be limited; anytime you want to deviate from a straight-line position, the Luminaire provides you with the tools to position your design to enhance your creation. In this two-hour lesson, we will use both the snowman sticker and background scanning tools to perfectly position your design onto the fabric.
(S) Fri / July 24 2:00-4:00
Class #4: Stitch Vision Technology – Auditioning and Adjusting StitchesStitchVison Technology available on the Luminaire enables you to project stitches in actual size directly onto your fabric, enabling you to choose the perfect stitch for your fabric. In this two-hour class, you will learn to use the Dual-Purpose Stylus to preview three stitches at a time. Time permitting, we will also explore the use of the Luminaire’s projector to display a single guideline marker, double guidelines, an angled guideline, and even guideline projected onto your fabric.
(S) Fri / Aug 28 2:00-4:00
Luminaire XP1 Playbook Series #2 Instructor: Lorie Manciet Class Fee: $85 for 4 Classes ($25 for 1 class –with available space)
Class #1: Order Function - Disney Stitches In The HoopLuminaire Playbook page 130. In this lesson we will combine embroidery patterns or machine stitches with the border function to create rows that are perfectly even and spaced exactly the way you want. Editing tools will be used to offset the rows and repeat for “all over” embroidery.
(S) Tue / May 26 10:00-12:00
Class #2: Positioning A Design - Scan Background/Snowman StickersLuminaire Playbook page 163. The Embroidery Positioning Stickers (“snowmen”) packaged with the Luminaire will be used to position butterflies fluttering around a floral pattern you will embroider to start this lesson. The design, featuring a charming garden scene with heart-shaped flowers, a cute little squirrel and the sentiment “Love Grows Here”, will be provided to you. On screen, you will designate the places on this embroidered design where you would like to see your butterflies fluttering, then place the sticker to reflect the orientation/angle you would like for that design. If desired, you can change the colors and sizes of the butterflies as you place them onto your design. The camera will scan the hoop and recognize the positioning scanner, then reposition the design to embroider it onto your floral pattern to your specifications.
(S) Tue / Jun 23 10:00-12:00
Class #3: Embroidery Combination - Projection PlacementLuminaire Playbook page 177. In this lesson, we will learn how to accurately place multiple border designs to create a cohesive border. We will use the video #30, Projection Placement Rose Table Topper, as our guide. However, rather than the large tabletop illustrated in this design, we will create a set of four napkins utilizing We will use basic editing tools, including Move, Rotate, and Mirror Image techniques in combination with Luminaire’s projector to create a string of chile peppers bordering four 20” by 20” cloth napkins.
(S) Tue / Jul 21 10:00-12:00
Class #4: Embroidery Combination - Combining Embroidery Patterns with Alphabet CharactersLuminaire playbook plage 101.
