Terri May will be oering a Wheel Class for beginners; and a Wood-Fired Soda Kiln class will be oered by Karen Perkins and Lynn Pedersen, our Collaboration instructors, in cooperation with Jesse Jones of Pleasant Hill Pottery. Ceramics classes at Clay Space are a great deal that can’t be matched elsewhere in Eugene! They oer an excellent introduction to the studio; provide an opportunity for instruction and teacher guidance; and include daily access to working in the studio. There are other ways to use the studio! If you would like to make Clay Space a part of your regular schedule, we have a month-to-month membership, as well as a 3-month membership option. There are some great benets to having a membership, including unlimited access to Clay Space during normal business hours. That means there's no limit on how much time you can spend creating! Ten-packs and day passes are another easy, exible way to use the studio. One ten-pack gives you ten day-long visits to the studio for you to use at your convenience. Ten-packs can also be shared — so why not get your friends together and come in for a fun clay day! While you're at the studio, be sure to check our our two current exhibits. We are hosting a gallery showing of wood-red pottery by Jesse Jones of Pleasant Hill Pottery and a gallery of artwork by two studio artists, Phoebe Cole Gordon and Renée Manford. We are also hosting the David Stannard Archive — a display of pottery and educational materials in memoriam of David Stannard, a Eugene, OR and Fairbanks, AK potter who sourced all of his materials locally.     Wood-Fired Soda Class: Karen Perkins, Lynn Pedersen & Jesse JonesWednesday evenings, starting January 7th, ending Saturday, February 28th

    Weeks 1-6: Wednesday evenings, 6:00pm-8:00pm at Clay Space Weeks 7-8: Saturday & Sunday at Pleasant Hill Pottery

    Through the course of this eight-week class, students will learn about soda kilns, how to create form and texture in wheel thrown and hand-built forms for an optimal soda outcome, and they will participate in firing their work in Jesse Jones’ wood-fired soda kiln at Pleasant Hill Pottery. The first six weeks will take place at Clay Space, and the 7th and 8th week of class will take place on the weekends at Pleasant Hill pottery. Students will load and participate in the firing of the kiln the weekend of February 21st, and then unload the following weekend. This class will be a rare opportunity for students to discover first-hand the unique and striking effects that result from soda and wood ash fusing with the clay body and interacting with the glazed surfaces of their work! Intermediate and advanced students.

    WINTER WORKSHOPSJanuarySaturday, January 10th | 12:00pm to 4:30pmCreating Copper with Metal Clay: Donna Yutzy

    If you are looking for the most affordable way to explore metal clay, this copper class is the class for you! You will have lots of clay to work with and will develop your skills using metal clay. We will cover the tools used and for what purpose. Projects will be fired in class and finishing methods covered. You can create pendants, earrings, tags, buttons, and charms. This class is great for the beginner and anyone interested in learning about working with copper metal clay!Workshop Fee: $65 plus $25 materials charge for the metal clay medium

    Wed, January 21st | 6:00pm to 8:30pm & Thurs, January 22nd | 6:00pm to 8:00pmNew Mokume-Gane Marbled Pendant With Metal Clay: Donna Yutzy

    This is a new technical version of Mokume-Gane which can be accomplished by using silver and copper clay, and will not require the very difficult traditional learning process. We will have 10 grams of fine silver metal clay and 15 grams of copper metal clay to work with. We will marble our clay and cut into shapes. After drying, we file to reveal our pattern. The pieces will be fired overnight and we will file and polish our pieces the second night. This is a new fun way to create with Metal Clay!

    Workshop Fee: $65 plus $50 materials charge for the metal clay medium

    FebruarySaturday, February 21st | 12:00pm to 4:30pmCapture Hard to Set Objects: Donna Yutzy

    This class will teach you how to capture odd-shaped objects like coins, stones, and shells that do not work well with the traditional methods of setting. We will be working with 10 grams of fine silver metal clay and fine silver wire. You bring your own treasure that you would like to capture.

    Workshop Fee: $65 plus $38 materials charge for the metal clay medium

    WINTER CLASSES 2015Session 1: January 5–February 27 (8 weeks)Most classes are for ages 16 and on. Ceramics classes include open studio time before / after class on class day plus additional studio use during the class session.

    Essence in Porcelain: Katie SwensonMonday mornings, starting January 5th, 10:00am to 1:00pmMonday evenings, starting January 5th, 6:00pm to 8:45pm

    Join Katie Swenson as she leads students through an exploration of the essential qualities of porcelain. In this class students learn about the nuances of hand building and learn about coloring techniques with porcelain—the most sensitive and translucent of clay bodies. Katie helps students manifest in their own projects, those qualities that are inherent in porcelain: delicacy, fineness, and elegance. With colors added to its body, students will also learn how to marble, stretch, inlay, and stain porcelain to get the effects they want.

    Class Fee (8 weeks): $235, includes 12.5 lbs. of clay, glazes, and firing

    Beginning Wheel Thrown Pottery Class: Terri May Tuesday evenings, starting January 6th: 6:00pm to 8:00pm

    Enjoy learning a new skill in a friendly and supportive environment. Experience the magic of the potter’s wheel through hands-on study led by an experienced teacher (who still remembers how it feels to be a beginner). Watch your skills progress as you go from centering a lump of clay to forming a symmetrical cylinder to shaping your own bowls and mugs. Learn about the fundamentals of proper glazing, and then finish your own custom pieces with inventive glaze treatments. It’s creative and lots of fun! 

    Class Fee: (8 weeks) $235, includes 25lbs of clay, glazes, and firing

    Handbuilding: Ellen DavidsonTuesday evenings, starting January 6th, 6:00pm to 9:00pm Thursday mornings, starting January 8th, 10:00am to 1:00pm

    Make almost anything you can imagine! Discover ways to form and texture your pieces. Learn the techniques of glaze application and overglaze decoration. These techniques add graphic and textural interest to your work. Students of all skill levels are welcome, as well as those who work on the wheel and are interested in graphics and decoration techniques with slips and glazes.

    Class Fee (8 weeks): $235, includes 25 lbs. of clay, glazes, and firing

    Tile-Making with Graphic Designs: Bob RichardsonThursday evenings, starting January 8th, 6:00pm to 8:00pm

    Do you love vivid colors and intricate glaze patterns? Join Bob Richardson's class and learn how to achieve beautiful ranges of color with glaze. Instruction will cover types of low-fire glazes, glaze application techniques, and creative ways to make and design tiles and hand-built forms. Students of all skill levels are welcome!

    Class Fee (8 weeks): $220, includes 25 lbs of clay and firing. Low-fire glazes in the colors of your choice can be purchased after the start of the class.
