Editorial.Current Formula 1 cars are much quieter than in the past, but the future may be silent. We saw the new Lightning GT road car at Coventry which is an electric vehicle with sports car performance and a reasonable range. Donington park is now the home to the FIA Formula E racing series for Electric racing cars. Nissan have been producing the Leaf for some time now and other manufacturers are certain to have similar models in design or production. In the mean time, lets get out and enjoy some classic noisy motorsport, but always wear ear protection if the sounds are loud.June has been a busy month with most weekends filled with multiple motorsport and motoring events and good weather in the most part, so get out there and enjoy your motoring.

To mark the Golden anniversary of Formula 3, the Silverstone Classic will include two races for cars from what is widely regarded as the classic period in its 50 year history. Formula 3 was introduced in 1964 to replace Formula Junior. After the early screamer years, the Formula developed in to the proving ground of future World Champions in the 1970s and 80s, with many Formula 1 drivers making the jump straight from Formula 3 to Formula 1. In fact most of the best Formula 1 drivers gained their racing skills in Formula 3, including Ayrton Senna, Nigel Mansell, Nelson Piquet, Alan Jones and Alain Prost. Many of the cars driven by these superstars will be in action at the Silverstone Classic, as it is hoped to assemble the largest grid of classic Formula 3 cars ever seen at Silverstone. Cars already entered include cars originally driven by Gerhard Berger, Tony Brise, Rupert Keegan, Teo Fabi, Larry Perkins, Andrea de Cesaris and Derek Warwick.Silverstone Classic 25th-27th July 2014 See www.silverstoneclassic.com for further information

Minor TripMAC staff member Rachel Lovett, aged 22, drove her 1954 Morris Minor up Shelsley Walsh Hill, competing in the Best of British Hill climb meeting. Her next trip is far more ambitious as she will take the car to Mongolia in a 10,000 mile four week charity adventure

Correction.Last month on the contents page, we made an error in referring to the Heritage Museum 25th anniversary event. The report by Pete Austin correctly reported it was the 21st Birthday celebrations. Sorry for any confusion.

Maserati celebrate centenary in style at Goodwood festival of Speed.Maserati had its largest ever collect of cars at this years Goodwood Festival of Speed event, but these three were very special. The Pininfarina styled Maserati A6GCS was named ‘best in show’ in the Cartier ‘style et luxe’ concours d’elegance. Then in the stable yard, the new Maserati Alfieri Concept took centre stage, while the specially liveried Maserati MC12 ‘Goodwood Cent 100’ driven by Michael Bartels won its class on the hill with a time of 45.82 seconds and was 2nd fastest overall, just 1.22 seconds behind Sebastien Loeb in the purpose built Pikes Peak Peugeot. This special MC12 is decorated with artistic paintings of Maserati’s motorsport glories: Stirling Moss in a 250F, the MC12 FIA GT cars and even an outline of the Goodwood hillclimb route.

Lightning Strikes Coventry.Seen at Motofest in Coventry was the new Lightning GT, an electric car built in Coventry at ADV, a centre of car excellence on the Bayton Road Industrial Estate. The car is powered by the new MAGTEC twin motor drivetrain, developing 300 Kw/400 ps, driving through the rear wheels. The gearbox is a single speed reduction gearbox with an electronic differential plus traction control. It can operate on just one wheel and gearbox, the ultimate failsafe unit. It uses a Lithium Titanate (LTD) Dual 450v battery. The standard charge time is 15 hours from zero, but the fast charge time from zero is just 2 1/2 hours and has an ultrafast charge time of 10 to 20 minutes. It can also absorb full regenerative braking energy. The body is either carbon fibre or aluminium with a lightweight Aluminium honeycomb chassis. The suspension consists of Alloy wishbones and coil springs over dampers with an electronic speed sensitive rack and pinion steering system. While still under development , the 0-60mph time should be below 5 seconds, with an electronically limited top speed of 130 mph. Importantly, it should have a range of 150 miles. for more information see www.lightningcarcompany.co.uk

Plum Pudding back on the menu. After the problems at Mallory Park last year, the new circuit owners are doing all they can to resume normal service as soon as possible. With this in mind, they are pleased to announce that the annual Christmas favourite is back in business. The Plum Pudding race meeting traditionally takes place on Boxing day and is a mixture of car and motorbike races plus festive frivolity. Boxing Day 2014 will see the meeting return to Mallory Park with the support of East Midlands Racing Association (EMRA) who will handle the bike side of the event. For 4 wheel competitors, regulations have been submitted to the MSA for a National B permit, which has been issued. See their web site for further information at www.mallorypark.co.uk

Gary EastwoodReturning to British GT after a break of a few years, a jubilant Gary Eastwood enjoyed his first victory in the British GT two hour race at Rockingham partnered by the hugely experienced Rob Barff.Their victory in the two hour race, with Gary starting the car, went against perceived wisdom off leaving the gentleman/amateur driver in the car until very late in the pit-stop window.Nevertheless Rob Barff emerged and maintained the lead that Gary had held against strong opposition for the duration of his stint behind the wheel in spite of his early dominance being largely negated by a safety-car period. After the trials at opening round at Oulton Park it was a fitting reward for Gary, Rob and the whole of Anthony Cheshire's FF Corse team.

Motorsport at the Palace 2014The former motor racing circuit at Crystal Palace in London held its fifth annual Motorsport at the Palace event over the Bank Holiday weekend at the end of May. It proved to be a big success with over 5,000 spectators attending despite the typical poor Bank Holiday weather on the Monday. Over £3,500 was raised for local charity St Christopher’s Hospice. The course record was smashed on Sunday by

Gary Thomas driving a Force PT, who set a new record at 32.58 seconds. Justin Andrews claimed Fastest Time of Day on Monday with a time of 31.19 seconds 0n a shortened course due to the rain. The high light of the weekend was a wonderful reunion of cars and drivers from the legendary 1971 Osram Saloon Car race held at Crystal Palace. The cars were lined up in Grid formation along the old Terrace Straight, just as they were 43 years ago. Ex-racer Mike Crabtree was back behind the wheel of his Ford Escort Mk 1 RS1600, while Gregor Marshall, son of the late, great Gerry Marshall who won the race back in 1971, drove the Colin Robbins replica of Marshall’s Vauxhall Viva GT. John Shoesmith was at the wheel of the Chevrolet Camaro which was raced by Martin Thomas back in 71. Behind them on the grid was Julian Townsend’s Ford Anglia which raced at Crystal Palace in period and the rare Fraud Cortina Mk2 raced by famous Australian driver Doc Merfield, and now owned by Jon Doubleday. To add even more atmosphere to the event, the original Murray Walker commentary was played out through the loudspeakers in the

park.

Goodwood Festival of Speed. 26th-29th June 2014. All photos courtesy of Goodwood and named photographers.Probably the biggest motoring garden party in the World took place at Goodwood House over the last weekend in June 2014. The event has now grown to 4 days, with Thursday given over to the Motoring manufacturers to promote the Moving Motor show, the largest Motor Show in the UK. Many manufacturers use the event to launch new models, and the public have the chance to ride up the famous hill climb course in many modern vehicles. Over 34,000 people attended the Moving motor show, a new record for the Thursday event. Major manufacturers in attendance included Audi, BMW, Citroen, Ferrari, Ford, Honda, Mazda, Mercedes Benz, Nissan, Peugeot, Porsche, Renault, Rolls Royce, SEAT, Skoda, Toyota and Volvo plus others. Several manufacturers used the event to launch

new models, including the World debut of the new Ford Focus ST, Bentley Continental GT3 R, Honda NSX Concept and Peugeot 208 GTi 30th anniversary edition giving this event the unofficial title of British Motor Show.Friday, Saturday and Sunday are the serious days, when the hill climb course is used for demonstration runs and timed runs by famous racing cars from all over the World. The theme of this years event was “Addicted to Winning”. This years event was the most successful in the events 21 year history, with over 200,000 visitors attending, and many more watching live all over the world, on-line via FOS Live streaming through the internet. There were two timed competitions this year. As well as the usual top ten run off on Sunday afternoon for the fastest time up the hill, another shoot out event on Saturday was the Michelin Supercar Run. This pitted

some of the fastest road going super cars against each other, to see which was the fastest over the hill climb course. This honour fell to Jann Mardenborough in the Nissan. One of the high-lights of the event for most motorsport fans was when Ferrari got two of their past World Champions together with their title winning Ferraris. John Surtees was reunited with his 1964 Championship winning Ferrari 164 along with Kimi Raikkonen and his 2007 Championship winning Ferrari F2007.The event reads like a who’s who of modern motorsport history, with so many drivers attending like Sir Stirling Moss, Sir Jackie Stewart, John Surtees, Lewis Hamilton, Jenson Button, Kimi Raikkonen, Sebastien Loeb who was going for the hill record in the Pikes Peak Peugeot, ‘King’ Richard Petty of American Nascar fame, Mark Webber, Giacomo Agostini, Wayne Gardner, Freddie Spencer, and Emerson Fittipaldi to name just a few.

At the top of the hill was the usual forrest rally stage held in the woods overlooking Goodwood House. There is a separate Rally car paddock at the top of the hill, next to the stage, which housed all kinds of exotic rally cars including various of the popular Group B giants from the 1980s. However, it was the latest model of Dani Sordo which was quickest round the twisty gravel stage with the UK debut of the Hyundai i20 WRC.The Festival always offers a complete Motorsport event, and beside the supercars, racing cars and rally cars, they always have an impressive selection of motorbikes along with many of the previous champions to ride them again. The highlight of Sunday is the shootout, where the fastest cars

Dani Sordo, Hyundai i20 WRC (Dominic James)

Freddie Spencer, Honda NSR 500 (Jochen Van Cauwenberghe)

compete against each other for the fastest time up the hill. This year, Sebastien Loeb decided to have a serious attempt at the outright record and came with the Pikes Peak winning Peugeot 208 T16 and easily won the event but his time of 44.60 seconds was exactly 3 seconds slower than the outright record held by Nick Heidfeld in a McLaren grand prix car. It still made him the 6th fastest ever driver to complete the course at Goodwood. Michael Bartels was second fastest in the Maserati MC12 Goodwood Cent 100, just 1.22 seconds slower than Loeb. Former IndyCar Champion and Indy 500 winner Kenny Brack was third in a long tail McLaren F1 GTR.

New record time at Goodwood Festival of Speed.Nick Heidfeld has held the record at Goodwood since 1999 when he set a time of 41.6 seconds in a Grand Prix McLaren Mercedes Benz MP4-13 with an average speed of 104mph. This year that record was broken by 32 seconds by Squadron Leader Dave Piper (retired) who completed the course in just 9.98 seconds. He was, however, above the track at the controls of a Midair Squadron Hawker Hunter XL577 jet aircraft! This was the first and only attempt of this kind and the jet reached a top speed of 415 mph (361 knots) as it weaved its way to the top of the course. The Hawker Hunter set the World air speed record in 1953.

Best of British. Shelsley Walsh. 31st May-1st June 2014. By Simon & Janet Wright.

A couple of spectacular incidents could not put the dampener on an action packed British Hill Climb Championship round in the sunny Worcestershire countryside. Two days of good weather had led to ideal conditions for the timed runs on Sunday in front of a large crowd. After all the cars had completed their first timed run on Sunday, there was the first Top Twelve Run-Off for the fastest twelve cars battle for championship points. This proved to be a very close fought affair, with 2012 Champion Trevor Willis in his V8 OMS 28 beating young Jos Goodyear in his

Classic and Competition car July 2014 Page 16

supercharged, motorcycle engined GWR Raptor by just 4/100ths of a second. Will Hall in a Force WH took third place, 0.12 seconds behind, while reigning Champion Scott Moran could only manage 4th. The second Top Twelve Run-Off at the end of the second timed runs, was delayed when Wallace Menzies had a massive accident and rolled his DJ Firestorm on the approach to the esses. The Cosworth powered DJ Firestorm was probably doing over 130 mph on the approach to the bottom esses. He was trapped in the car for some time as the medical and emergency crews tended to him on the spot, as they struggled to free him from the wreckage. Once out of the car, or what was left of it, the Scot

Fastest man on the second Top Twelve run off was Tom New in the Gould GR55 with a time of 23.55 seconds

was taken to hospital. He was later released after treatment for a cracked cheek bone, and stitches for cuts and bruising. It is reported that he was in fine spirits and that it felt like he had been in a rough game of rugby. He hopes to return to Shelsley Walsh later in the year and thanked the rescue staff at Shelsley Walsh for their actions. After the incident, the perfect conditions saw two new course records set. Richard Jones driving a Brabham BT29X set a new record of 29.10 seconds in the pre 1971 Sports and racing car class, while ‘Man of the Meeting’ Jos Goodyear set a new course record in the 2 litre racing car class with a time of 23.67 seconds on his way to 3rd place in the second run off. The surprise winner of the second run off was Tom New in his Gould GR55 with a time of 23.55 seconds. Champion Scott Moran was just 0,09 of a second behind in 2nd place with Jos

Goodyear 3rd. Trevor Willis who was fastest in the first top twelve run off failed on the second run and was classified 12th.The weekend also hosted rounds of the Midland Hill Climb championship which saw Mike Turpin in a supercharged Vauxhall 220 and Robert Lancaster-Gayle in a Porsche 996 GT3 both win their respective classes to lead the championship after reigning champion Rob Stevens failed to start after mechanical problems in practice.Other class winners included Allan Warburton in his Caterham 7, Carl Jones in his Austin Mini, Tim Cross in an OMS, Graham

Wynn in a Force, Mark Goodyear in an OMS Hornet, Richard Spedding in a Force PC, Rodney Eyles in a Pilbeam and Will Hall in a Force.Another driver having problems on the famous course was Ash Mason who

crashed his DJ Firehawk at Kennel bend, doing considerable damage to the single seater. However, the chassis was intact and it was the wings and suspension that took the force of the impact, so the car is repairable. The meeting also saw a round of the 2014 Ferrari Hill Climb Championship, which added some nice Italian exotica to the event. Richard Prior took his Ferrari F355 to the top of the class with a time of 34.22 seconds, while John Marshall in a Ferrari 430 Scuderia was 2nd, just 0.41 of a second behind, with Richard Preece 3rd in class in his Ferrari F355 Berlinetta. There were a couple of classes for Specials, with Peter Speakman the fastest with a time of 34.48 seconds in the Farm special, while Jan Nycz in the Staride Mk III was quickest in the class for members of the 500 Owners Association.

British GT Silverstone 500 1st June 2014. By Mick Herring.

The longest race of the British GT season, the Silverstone 500 on the full Grand Prix circuit which remained cloudy but dry for the full duration of the 3 hour race. One non-starter was Steve Tandy's Generation Bentley Continental GT3 which was engulfed in a frontal fireball when the oil cooler split and dumped oil on the red-hot turbo. Thirty six cars took the start of this eagerly awaited race and despite struggling in qualifying, the race was won by Ahmad Al Harthay and Michael Caine's Oman Racing Team Aston

Martin GT3 Vantage by a margin of 56 seconds, which he had extended since taking the car over for his final stint. Completing an Aston Martin 1-2 was the Beechdean entry of reigning champions Andrew Howard and Jonny Adam. Third on the track was the ever-improving M-Sport Bentley Continental GT3 of Steven Kane and Rembert Berg but having taken the place late in the race following what was judged to be avoidable contact with the Ecurie Ecosse BMW of Alexander Sims, shared with Marco Attard, Kane was given a 30 second penalty which put them back in fourth. A strong performance throughout the race gave sixth place to the Triple 8 BMW Z4 of Derek Johnston and Silverstone

business man Luke Hines.Fastest lap of the race was little consolation for Joe Osborne, who after closing right up to the winning car, was given a drive-through penalty for a yellow flag infringement and eventually finish

eighth. With such a large field on Silverstone's fast GP circuit and disparate speed between the GT3 and GT4 cars, separate accidents eliminated the spectacular McLaren of Jim Geddie, the Ferrari of

Rob Barff and the United Autosports Audi of Mark Patterson.GT4 was equally hotly contested with 2007 British GT champion Bradley Ellis' Ginetta G55, shared with Adey Barwick, taking the win, with returning co-champion Ryan Ratcliffe's similar car, shared with Matt Draper, coming second.Tom Oliphant was forced to retire the Ginetta G55 which he shares with GT4's other co-reigning champion, Rick Parfitt Jr, following a collision that damaged a rear oil-seal, which subsequently saw the oily contents catch fire at the rear of the car.In third place in GT4 was the Aston Martin from TF Sport, driven by Andrew Jarman and Devon Modell.Once again Beechdean figured strongly in GT4 with the Aston Martin of Jake Giddings and Ross Wylie in fourth.

Coventry MotoFest. 1st June 2014. By Simon and Janet Wright. This is a fairly new episode in the long history of Coventry motoring events which have included some fantastic demonstrations of vehicles around the inner ring roads of Coventry. Motofest was the first event to take the cavalcades out on to the main Coventry Ring Road on the Sunday, with the anti clockwise ‘inner’ lanes being closed to traffic during the day to allow some high speed cavalcades to be run. The first run in the morning was delayed by some time as the safety features were added to the ring road to ensure spectator safety. It consisted of several laps of 10 TVR cars of various vintage being led round by a Jaguar pace car. I’m not sure who the parade was for, the drivers or the spectators, as the cars were taken at quite a fast pace, only giving the people a fleeting glance as the cars sped past. Then again, if they had gone slower for the public to enjoy them, it would have taken a lot longer for them to have completed a lap, with a long gap between. Lets

hope that next year then can have more cars in a longer procession, taken at slower speeds for the spectator to enjoy the classic cars.Leaving the ring road and going in to the City centre, Motofest really came alive, with various car displays scattered all around the city centre, with lots for people to see. Outside the World famous Coventry Transport museum, in Millennium place, was an area reserved for vehicles and bikes arriving from a run from the Ace Cafe in London, as well as a few special vehicles on display from inside the museum, including the locally built State car of King George VI, a 1947 Daimler DE36. There were more displays just outside Coventry Cathedral where Peugeot and Citroen had a display of modern cars along with a few special classic vehicles. Coming in to the main city centre, the Broadgate area, under the statue of Lady Godiva, was filled with classic cars of every shape and type. The Standard Motor Club had a prominent position next to the Flying Standard

TVR’s line up before their laps round the inner ringroad.

public house, with a good display of Standard cars, all built in Coventry. There were plenty of other classic cars representing the 1960s, 70s and 80s from home and abroad including Ford and the Volkswagen Beetle and various BMWs. There were some fine examples of Sunbeam Alpines/Tigers on show, another model associated with Coventry as they were built by the Rootes empire which had a factory at Ryton. There was also a line up of made in Coventry, which included a Jaguar XJS

Sports car, a Hillman Imp, a pair of Triumph 1300 saloons, a Triumph Dolomite Sprint and a Triumph Dolomite and an E-Type Jaguar.Moving further round the city centre, in Bull Yard there was a display from the Stag Owners Club with six locally built Triumph Stags glistening in the sunshine. By the Belgrave Theatre, very near the Ring road, were various TVR models, which had been the first vehicles out on the ring road cavalcade.Returning to the ring road in the afternoon, there was a high speed cavalcade of

competition and high performance cars, again behind the official pace car. Leading the way was Duncan Horlor in his Spire GT3 sports racing car from the 750 Motorclub RGB Championship. Behind him were a couple of Jaguar sports cars and a Talbot

Lotus Sunbeam rally car. There was an original Austin Mini racer, a Land Rover Dakar raid car, Skoda Flavia rally car and Skoda Octavia Bonneville record car, an Alfa Romeo Guillietta from the 1970s, a pair of Time Attack modified saloons from Nissan and Toyota and a Group 1 Rover SD1 British Touring car liveried saloon. The cars did several high speed laps in convoy, which gave the crowds a good impression of what the cars are like when competing. If Coventry

want to stage proper races in the future, a lot of work would be required to bring the course up to modern safety levels, but it would make a great spectacle round the streets of what was truly the heart of the British Motor Industry.

One unusual car was a 1965 Citroen 2CV 4x4 Sahara. Only around 700 of these were built by Citroen between 1960 and 1967.It is thought that only around 30-40 remain, and not all of these are in running order. The model was first produced for oil exploration in North Africa. It was also purchased by the Swiss Post Office and the Spanish Civil Guard for use in the Pyrenees. Unlike most 4 wheel drive cars, this vehicle has two engines, one in the front and one in the back. This gives equal weight distribution over each axle, making it a very capable 4x4, allowing it to climb very steep inclines and cross sand, mud and snow with ease. The two 425cc engines can be engaged to operate at the same time, link the gearboxes and carburettors and the hydraulic clutches. With both engines running, a top speed of around 60 mph can be achieved. With only one engine running, that speed is considerably less. The fuel tanks are double skinned and located under the front seats with the fuel fillers coming in through

the front doors. The chassis is unique to this model, along with the bonnet, boot lid, rear wings, seats and rear parcel shelf plus the floor mounted gear lever. This made the car expensive, when new, about twice the price of a normal 2CV.

Held on the weekend closest to the opening of the Brooklands track on 17th June 1907 the Brooklands Double 12 is a joint enterprise between the Vintage Sports Car Club (VSCC) and Brooklands Museum. The weekend comprised three competitive elements organised by the VSCC namely Speed Trials (held on the Saturday on the Mercedes Benz World circuit) with Driving Tests and a Concours being held on the Sunday. The Driving Tests included part of the original finishing straight, the outer paddock, the Test Hill and parts of the Members Banking while the Concours cars were displayed in front of the original clubhouse. The name of the event harks back to the Junior Car Club events held at Brooklands between 1929 and 1931. Night racing was not allowed so the 24 hour races were run in 12 hour stints over the two days.

Robin Beech certainly got the cameras clicking with a smoky ascent of the Test Hill in his 1939 Rolls Royce Phantom II Handlye Special. Each competitor had two runs at the 5 tests in the morning followed by a further run (with slight variations) in the afternoon. In addition to the competitive parts of the event the museum was open to the public over the two days and a number of car clubs displayed their cars around the site. Accommodation for the traders was provided in the paddock car bays and even the

Cholmondeley Pageant of Power. 13th-15th June 2014. By Simon & Janet Wright.Held in the scenic grounds of Cholmondeley Castle in Cheshire, England, the Pageant of Power is now in its 7th year and continues to draw some of the most historic competition cars and exotic super cars to this northern venue for 3 days of action and excitement. This year was a major anniversary for Maserati, who were celebrating their centenary in 2014. This formed part of the Italian Theme for this years Pageant of Power which saw crowds of over 67,000 people attend over the 3 days of the event. The events usual mix of action on the track, in the air and on the mere continued this year as normal, and the musical element was extended from the usual Saturday concert, which featured Aled Jones, to include an additional Friday night concert featuring Status Quo. In addition to the track action, there was historic scrammbling over a tricky short course in the centre of the track which included both solo and sidecars. This year the action on the water was from JSRA British Jet Ski Racing, which provided some interesting displays and close racing

both on and above the water. Also in the large infield section were the trade displays from motor manufacturers, craft displays and plenty of food outlets. The Sporting Bears had a fantastic selection of Supercars in which the public could pay to have a

ride, all monies going to charity. The selection of supercars was impressive, including Ariel Atom, Ulitma GTR, Ferrari Dino, Lamborghini and at the other end of the pay scale a small but perfectly formed Frog Eyed Austin Healey Sprite. Finally outside the main straight were the car club displays which included many unusual classic cars. The competition in the Pageant of Power was very diverse for what vehicle would set the fastest time over the 1.2 mile course. In the absence of any modern

(1970-80s) Grand Prix cars, the field was fairly open with a large number of Racing motorbikes, modern supercar road sports cars and a selection of sports racing cars and single seaters, the victory could go to any one of several competitors. At the end of five timed runs over the weekend, it was last years winner Robbie Kerr who literally ‘flew’ round the course in 56.41 seconds at the wheel of his Radical SR8 RX racing sportscar

to win the event. He was over 4 seconds clear of the next fastest person, Matt Winstanley riding a Honda CRF 450 racing motorcycle who won the Supermoto class with a time of 60.85 seconds. Third place went to Nikki Faulkner in the lightweight Ariel Atom 3.5R, who may have gone quicker than his best time of 60.95 seconds, when his second timed run on Saturday ended with him going off at Lodge corner, nearly hitting the straw bales. His first timed run was still 3rd quickest overall and won him the Supercars and Track Day Cars class. In the Classic Pre-War class, it was the little 3 wheeler Morgan of Ian Stewart that set the fastest time in the class with a 78.39

seconds on his last run of the weekend, probably the smallest engined car in the class beating all the 8 litre plus giants of the class like Chris Williams Napier Bentley that came 2nd in class, or the Packard Bentley of Duncan Round that finished 6th in class. The Maserati class in honour of their centenary had 13 entries which ranged from a 1955 Maserati 250F driven by Ian Duncan to a 2014 Maserati Ghibli driven by James Pickford and Ben Seyfied. The fastest time went to Andrew Phillips in the 2010 Maserati Grancabrio with a time of 70.99 seconds, with local hero Jason Minshaw 2nd in class in the immaculate 1959 Maserati Birdcage T61 with a time of 72.65 seconds. James Pickford in the

2014 Maserati Ghibli was 3rd fastest in class with a time of 75.04 seconds. The Rally car class was won by Elfyn Evans in a new Ford Fiesta S2000 in 65.23 seconds from Justin Law in a Lancia Delta Intergrale on 67.22 seconds. The Sports and Sports Racing Cars Pre 1966 was won by Alistair Dyson in a Jaguar E-Type with a time of 72.83 seconds.

The Historic Formula 1 and Single Seater class was won by Keith Harris in a Chevron B25 in a time of 66.62 seconds, just ahead of Allan Rennie in the unique Lotus 35 Martin F1 car which completed the course in 67.61 seconds. The final two classes were for the 2 wheeled brigade. Mike Farrall was fastest in the Motorcycles class on a Rudge TTR with a time recorded at 72.60 seconds. John Hackett was 2nd in class with a time of 74.69 seconds on a more modern Ducati 888 Corse. Matt Winstanley was quickest in the Supermoto class with the 3rd fastest time overall in 60.85 seconds. Chris Hodgson was 2nd in class on a KTM 450 in 61.61 seconds.

GT Cup, Silverstone 7th - 8th June 2014. By Mick Herring

GT Cup's 3 race visit to Silverstone was run on the International circuit comprising the grid line up on the F1 circuit with the run up to the complex at Village corner before braving the hump (The Link) that joins the the newest part of Silverstone to the Hangar Straight. In a reversal of fortunes from the first round at Donington, this meeting would yield a clean sweep for Jim Geddie in his United Autosports McLaren MP4-12C after trading places with Shaun Balfe's Ferrari 458 in each of the three races over the weekend. In Saturday's 45 minute race Shaun Balfe was awarded a drive through penalty and subsequent disqualification for not taking it within the specified period.Arwyn Williams was a distant 2nd and Iain Dockerill took the first of his three third places of the weekend.Silverstone provided a good weekend's racing for the father and son duo of Shamus and Peter Jennings, who would both

go home to Ireland with wins in the GTC Class in their near-identical Ferrari 458s, with Peter now leading the championship. Jamie Stanley and John Searle continued their strong performances with two 2nd places and a GTC-class win Sunday's final race.Despite a position dropping spin in race 1, reigning champion Jeff Wyatt secured a GTA win and a second place in the two Sunday races. The GTB class gave two wins and a 2nd for David Walley's Porsche 997 GT3 Cup car. Another father and son duo, that of Iain and Chris Dockerill enjoyed some close racing together in Sunday's first race, Dockerill junior insisting that he let his father beat him otherwise he would be fishing and not racing for the foreseeable future. Sadly Chris would have to retire from races 1 and 3.The fast TVR Sagaris of Tim Hood had a brief but incredibly fire engulfing moment when the front splitter broke and fractured an oil line as it flapped. The in-car video showed the flash fire created by the leaking oil, surging through the cockpit and Tim Hood was lucky to suffer nothing more than singed eyebrows and a badly singed TVR.

Shelsley Breakfast Club, 15th June 2014. By Simon Wright. The June meeting continued the trend of successful meetings this year with over 300 turning up for the Sunday morning social. Now entering its 4th year, these free meetings draw in a mix of vintage, classic and modern motoring exotica, that are displayed in the historic paddock area of the famous hill climb course. For the energetic people, it is also possible to walk along the historic hill climb course, either before or after breakfast in the paddock Stratstone restaurant. Even though it was an

overcast day, the paddock was about full by 9:30am and even the car park contained an interesting selection of overflow cars. The main paddock had an European theme with various models of Italian Ferrari and a couple of replica Lancia Stratos, both in full rally trim colour schemes and a genuine Maserati Ghibli. There was a wide range of German Porsche models, including one in the

Silver Martini Racing colour scheme. The British were represented with a nice example of the MG SV-R, the last MG Supercar built under British ownership, several Jaguar E-Types, Aston Martin, Lotus, TVR and a Ogle SX1000. The MG SV-R was one of approximately 82 built between 2003 and 2005 and

powered by a 4.6 litre V8 Ford engine which developed 320 bhp and fitted to a carbon fibre body. This made the car very expensive at between £75,000 and £90,000, it had a top speed of 165 mph and a 0-60 mph time of 5.3 seconds. The 1961 Ogle SX 1000 was built using an Ogle glass fibre body fitted with Mini mechanical components

including the 1275cc A series engine. The early models were fitted with the 997cc Cooper engine and cost £1176 in 1962. It is thought that only 66 were made before the death of David Ogle in 1962 involving one of his Ogle SX 1000 cars. The next Breakfast Club meeting is scheduled for 9am Sunday the 13th July 2014. The Morgan Three Wheeler Club

Twisty Sprint, Curborough 22nd June 2014.

By Simon Wright.A gloriously warm and sunny day greeted the competitors for the annual Morgan Three Wheeler Club Twisty Sprint, held at Curborough, near Lichfield, in the

heart of England. The meeting is organised under an Auto Cycle Union permit, which allows the Morgans to run with a ‘sidecar’ passenger or suitable ballast in the Racing, Standard Touring Modified classes of the Morgan Three

Wheeler Club Challenge Series, the Sprint and Hill climb series and the Championship. There are four classes for 3 wheeled Morgans, class 4 being a Drivers class for the new 5 speed Morgan, three of which had been driven to the venue. The fifth class is for non Morgan 3 Wheelers, while class 6 is for motorcycle sidecars. Classes 7 through 9 are for motorcycles, with class 7 for 50cc Classic solo motorcycles while classes 8 and 9 are for Pre and Post 1950 Solos. With almost sixty entries on the program, and nearly half of them were Morgan 3 wheelers, the stage was set for an exciting days motorsport. First out on to the course were the Racing Class Morgans. Hamish Bibby and Maggie Tuer were

leading the class when they arrived at Curborough with their 1932 Jap racing 1208 and they continued to dominate the meeting winning their class and setting Fastest Time of Day (FTD) with a time of 38.26 seconds on their third timed run of

the day. Bill Tuer then jumped in the car with Maggie and went 2nd in class with a time of 39.05 seconds, while 3rd in class was another 1932 Jap Racing 1206 of Tim and Annette Gray in a time of 39.27 seconds. The Standard Class was led by Chris Harfield when they arrived, but he and Ann Harfield could only manage 2nd fastest in class in their 1938 F Super 1172 with a time of 54.44 on the second timed run, having to give best to the

1927 Aero Blackburne of Ian Hughes and Georgia Hornby who set a time of 53.72 seconds. Chris Harfield then passengered for David Harfield for 3rd place in class. The Touring Modified class saw Cathy Quinn at the top of the pile before the meeting, but she and Phil Bridge had to settle for 3rd in class at Curborough with a time of 48.10 seconds in their 1937 F2 E93A 1172. Fastest time in class was 46.05 seconds which was set by Danny and

Sandra Hodgson in a 1934 F2 E93A 1172, followed closely by David Poplar driving with ballast, who went round in 46.57 seconds in his 1950 F Super 1172.There were four of the 5 Speeders in their class with Mark Reeves and Joanne Wallace being easily fastest with a time of 39.76 seconds, over 3 seconds faster than Austin Smith and Joanna Wallace, with Graham and Dawn Sherwood placed 3rd in class. There were only a couple of entries in the other 3 wheeler class which saw Dave Hodgson and Ann Harfield set the fastest time in 45.15 seconds in their 1972 Buckland Ford 1293, just 0.6 of a second ahead of Jake Challenger

British GT Snetterton 21-22nd June 2014. By Mick Herring.British GT's annual visit to Snetterton's 300 circuit marked a triumphant return to form in race 1 for the Trackspeed Porsche pairing of Jon Minshaw and Phil Keen in GT3 and stoppage on lap two of race two following a three car collision which resulted in the elimination of the two Aston Martin's of John Gaw and Andy Schulz against the tyre wall, they having sandwiched the unfortunate 888 BMW Z4 of Luke Hines. The near one hour delay enabled the, thankfully, uninjured drivers to be checked over, the cars removed and the extensive tyre-wall/armco damage to be repaired. The aggregated result of race two gave reigning champions Andrew Howard and Jonny Adam a 14 second victoryThe rear of Schulz's Aston could be seen twenty feet in the air, through the gravel trap dust cloud, as the aftermath of the accident as they entered the fast first corner, Riches. The second half of race one saw Phil Keen having to defend

his first place from returning former British GT champion, Jonny Cocker, who was deputising for Alexander Sims in the Marco Attard Ecurie Ecosse BMW Z4.Attard had led for all of his stint in race one but the positions were reversed during the pit stops.Another new driver pairing was that of Irishman Adam Carroll with Gary Eastwood in the ff Corse Ferrari 458.Adam, who won the A1GP cup of Nations for Ireland in 2009 has been making his sportscar career in recent years and, never having sat in the Ferrari before today, topped the time-sheets at one point and would secure second place on the grid for race two, making up for the disappointment of being punted out of race one.

They would maintain the challenge and finish second adding to Gary's confidence following his victory at Rockingham alongside Rob Barff. The sheer speed and spectacle of British GT is amazing and the first race result of Trackspeed Porsche and Beechdean Aston Martin taking the first two places was fantastic to see.Third place on the track went to Triple 888s BMW pairing of Derek Johnston and Luke Hines but the pair were subsequently disqualified when Derek Johnston collided with a Ferrari that suddenly braked much earlier than it had done on previous laps. Third place was awarded to the sister BMW of Joe Osborne and Lee Mowle. With a loss of points, an endorsement on Derek's license and the race two crash, it was a bad weekend for the team.

Generation Bentley Racing enjoyed a better meeting despite brake problems in practice with a ninth and and eighth place. As ever GT4 was hotly contested, this time the victory going to the Lotus Evora GT4 of Gavan Kershaw and Oz Yusuf ahead of the consistent Beechdean Aston of Jake Giddings and Ross Wylie. Some luck returned for reigning champion Rick Parfitt Jr in the Ginetta he shares with Tom Oliphant in third. At the restart of race 2, after two laps behind the safety car in order for the cars to be warmed up, Jonny Adam would re-establish the lead he had been making and hand the car over to Andrew Howard to win by 14 seconds.

Similarly, Gary Eastwood added to the hard work of Adam Carroll for their second place.Former BTCC driver Tom Onslow-Cole was third in the GT3 Aston Martin Vantage he shares with Paul White.Race one winners Keen and Minshaw had to settle for fourth.Dominating GT4, Bradley Ellis made sure he and Adey Barwick went home with the winners trophy ahead of Rick Parfitt and Tom Oliphant, the red flag period providing them with the opportunity to change their gearbox.Making it a Ginetta G55 lock out were the delighted Danish pairing of Morten Dons and Aleksander Schjerpen in their first year of British GT and on unfamiliar tracks. The Mobil 1 Service Centre Master of the Weekend Award went to former Formula Ford racer Dan Cammish for taking fastest laps in both GT4 races and leading his class in race 2 prior to handing over. The Blancpain Gentleman Trophy was awarded to Lee Mowle for his podium finish and fifth place.Fittingly the British GT field honoured one of its greatest talents by observing a minute's silence on the grid prior to race 1 to remember the first anniversary of the death of Allan Simonsen who was killed at Le Mans one year ago.Still with us in spirit.

Valtteri Bottas's podium at the recent Austrian Grand Prix reminded me of another Finn who had success in sportcars but, unlike Bottas, did not create an impression in Formula One. This months image shows 'Flying Finn' Leo Kinnunen in his AAW run Surtees TS 16 waving through Francois Migault's BRM during practice for the 1974 British Grand Prix at Brands Hatch. As with most other Grand Prix he entered that season he failed to qualify, the only exception being the Swedish Grand Prix where he retired from the race. He did however have more success partnering Pedro Rodriguez in the Gulf Porsche 917 in 1970 and being the driver to beat in the Interseries events in the following years with his Porsche 917/10.

By Simon & Janet Wright.Celebrating 60 years of ‘Living the life of Riley’, the Riley Register held their 58th International Coventry Rally from the 27th to the 29th June 2014. The long weekend started with a display of twenty plus cars outside Coventry Transport Museum to celebrate the Riley Success 80 years ago at the 1934 Le Mans 24 Hours race. The main rally was held in the grounds of the Victorian Wroxall Abbey. The club was also celebrating the Register’s 60th Anniversary.

In the 1934 race, the works Riley 6/12 MPH cars finished first and second in the 1.5 litre class. The Riley that won the 1.5 litre class and finished 2nd overall was driven by French drivers Jean Sebilleau and Georges Delaroche. After 24 hours racing, they were only 13 laps behind the winning 2.3 litre Alfa Romeo 8C with its supercharged engine. Riley also finished 2nd in class with British drivers Freddie Dixon and Cyril Paul who were 3rd

overall, and 5th overall was a Riley Brooklands driven by Alex van der Becke and Kenneth Peacock who were second in the 1.1 litre class. They were backed up by Sammy Newsome and Percy Maclure who were 3rd in the 1.1.litre class in a Riley Nine Ulster Imp and 6th overall. overall and Dorothy Champney and Kay Petre 5th in the 1.1. litre class and 13th overall in yet another Riley Nine Ulster Imp. This impressive performance meant that the Riley Motor Company Ltd won both the 10th Rudge-Whitworth Biennial Cup and the Index of Performance with the Riley Brooklands of Alex van der Becke and Kenneth Peacock. The previous year Riley had sown the seeds for their

success when Alex van der Becke and Kenneth Peacock had won the 1.1 litre class and Index of Performance in a lone Riley Nine Brooklands in 4th overall. The Lady Lord Mayor of Coventry, Councillor Hazel Noonan and her Consort, her son Christopher, both attended the Riley Register celebration at Coventry Motor

This years VSCC LC&ES Summer Navigational Rally and Tour took place over a glorious weekend on 21st and 22nd June. The event was based at the home of Peter Stevenson in the village of Pailton near Rugby and comprised a 65 mile route (designed by Andy Fox) through the surrounding north Warwickshire, Leicestershire and Northamptonshire countryside.

The grounds of Peter’s property played host to registration and scrutineering on the Saturday prior to the event itself with his steam launch operating in the

afternoon giving trips round the lake for competitors together with rides on his miniature steam railway. Enthusiastic VSCC racer Mark Walker also invited everyone to visit his workshops at his farm in Swinford.Sunday dawned bright and clear as competitors gathered at the local Malt Kiln Farm Shop for the mid morning start. There were two elements to the event with a Navigational Rally where competitors checked in at a number

of points along the route and also a Tour using the same route for those content just to admire the scenery. GT Cup Donington 26/27 April 2014. By Mick Herring.Saturday's singleton GT Cup race at Donington gave the cars and drivers the opportunity to bring strategies into play that can't be used in the two sprint races that would unfold on Sunday. The threatened rain amounted to just a few spots as the cars started their formation laps. Shaun Balfe's Ferrari 458 led the familiar orange Porsche of Richard Chamberlain into Redgate for the first time, Jim Geddie's McLaren 3rd and Iain Dockerill a close 4th. The midfield was immediately split at the start when a Ginetta failed to get power down early enough causing all those behind to wait until they had crossed the line to start their race in earnest. The thirty car grid settled into a steady order until the pit stop window opened.First to pit was Jim Geddie followed by Shaun Balfe, but with a pit stop 1.3 seconds too short, Jim would get a stop-go penalty. He would fight back through the field to 2nd place.

Apart from another short rain shower near the end, Shaun Balfe took a comfortable win with Iain Dockerill awarded 3rd place after Richard Chamberlain's Porsche 935 was found to be underweight.GTC honours went to John Searle and Jamie Stanley's Ferrari 458 with Will Plant and Olly Bryant just 5 seconds behind in their GTB Porsche.

Sunday's first sprint race got underway in damp conditions with Shaun Balfe taking an immediate lead which would be negated after three laps when the safety car came out to retrieve a car from the gravel. With rain now falling, this prompted a flurry of stops to change to wet tyres. When the race restarted on lap 5, Dan Stringfellow made a daring move into Redgate in his 4 wheel drive Lamborghini but spun into the gravel, losing 3 laps before rejoining.Another long safety car intervention saw the race reduced to a 6 lap dash to the flag, giving Shaun Balfe his 2nd win of the weekend despite giving up the lead briefly to Jim Geddie.Sunday's final GT Cup race race provided a clean sweep for Shaun Balfe at his home circuit in a
