John Blair Wells studies physics in his free time. Physics is a science and discipline that has helped shape the way our society looks at things like technology, spirituality, and much more. A time in human history that had one of the biggest impacts on this discipline was during the classical period in Greece. Greek culture and science was far ahead of its time, as it was a common and accepted belief among fellow Greeks that the Earth was spherical. This is something that other civilizations would not discover until much, much later. A man by the name of Eratosthenes, would even accurately calculate the circumference of Earth.

While Greece remained a bright beacon of scientific and cultural development, there were still many different viewpoints on key issues. Aristarchus of Samos, for example, believed that the Sun was the center of the Solar system, not the Earth, which Aristotle believed. A student of Aristarchus would even claim that the Earth rotated on its own axis, which revolved around the Sun. This correct assessment could not be proven, however, so it did not ever become the accepted and common belief among Greek’, though many other scientists agreed with Aristarchus.

These ancient philosophers and scientists would pave the way for a new and exciting world, one that used logical processes and observation to find objective truths in the universe. These pioneers paved the way for other curious great thinkers to unravel the mysteries of the cosmos in ways we never imagined.

Blair Wells is a petroleum engineer who also spends a considerable amount of free time studying up on modern day physics
