Vertebrates VS. Invertebrates
• Vertebrate animals have a back bone.• There are five classifications of vertebrates: Fish, Amphibians, Reptiles, Birds, & Mammals.• These animals have a brain enclosed in a cranium, a closed circulatory system, and a heart divided into two, three, or four chambers.
• Invertebrate animals do not have a back bone.• There many types of invertebrates. The most common include: the protozoa, annelids, echinoderms, mollusks and arthropods.• These animals are multicellular. Their cells work together to help the animal survive.• Most invertebrates are symmetrical, with the exception of sponges & some coral

Interesting Facts on Vertebrates & Invertebrates
• Invertebrates include 97% of all known species whereas vertebrates include 3%
• Overall there is an estimated 3-30 million species of animals
• Invertebrates were the first animals to evolve.
• Insects are the largest group of invertebrates.
• Fish easily outnumber all other vertebrates.

Vertebrate Animals
• Fish: The Hammerhead Shark is a type of fish. - They have skin and breathe through their gills.- They are cold blooded. - Size: 13- 20 feet long, 500-1,000 pounds.- Interesting fact: Sharks are immune to cancer.
• Amphibians: The Poison Arrow Frog- They have moist skin and breathe through their lungs.- They are cold blooded.- They lay eggs- Size: extremely small: usually ½ inch long- Interesting fact: Poison Arrow Frogs live in the rainforest and are the most poisonous animals in the world.
![Page 7: Classification Of Animals](https://reader033.vdocument.in/reader033/viewer/2022051109/548eb94eb479598d5a8b4638/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
• Reptiles: The American Crocodile- Crocodiles have scales and breathe with their lungs.- They lay eggs and experience a live birth.- Size: Adults are 7-15 feet long and weigh 150-450 pounds.- Interesting fact: Crocodiles swallow stones to help them dive deeper.
• Birds: The Hummingbird- Hummingbirds have feathers and breathe with their lungs.
- They are warm blooded. - They are the smallest bird in the world. - Interesting fact: Hummingbirds are the only animals that can fly backwards.
• Mammals: The Blue Whale- The Blue Whale is the largest animal that has ever lived on Earth. - They breathe through their blowholes. - A new born is 20-26 feet long and weighs up to 6,614 pounds.- Interesting fact: Blue Whales are the loudest living animal. Their sound can be heard as far away as 530 miles.

TRUE OR FALSE???
1. Mammals are the only classified vertebrate that produces milk for their young. TRUE / FALSE
2. A turtle is classified as an amphibian. TRUE / FALSE
3. Reptiles are cold blooded. TRUE / FALSE4. Reptiles can lay eggs and also give birth to
their young. TRUE / FALSE

Invertebrate Animals
• Protozoa: The Paramecium - Paramecium can be found in ponds with scum.- It is covered with cilia, which are tiny little hairs that help it move.- The Paramecium eats tiny algae and plants. - Interesting fact: The Paramecium can move in all directions.
• Annelids: The Earthworm- Earthworms do not have eyes, but have light-sensitive cells throughout their outer skin. - They can grow anywhere between 90-300 millimeters long. - They have the ability to replace or replicate lost segments.- Interesting fact: In one acre of land, it is likely that there will be more than a million earthworms.

• Echinoderms: The Starfish (Sea Star) - Starfish are spiny, hard-skinned, and live on the rocky sea floor.- They move very slowly along the ocean floor. - Starfish eat clams, oysters, coral, and fish.- Interesting fact: A starfish can turn its stomach inside out.
• Mollusks: The Octopus - The Octopus has 8 tentacles & each one has 2 rows of suction cups.- They eat small crabs, scallops, snails, fish, and shrimp.- The Octopus lives on the ocean floor. - Interesting fact: The pupil of an octopus’ eye is rectangular.
• Arthropods: The Shrimp- Shrimp are small crustaceans that live on the floor of oceans & lakes.- They have a tough exoskeleton.- Shrimp have 5 pairs of jointed walking legs, 5 pairs of swimming legs, and 3
pairs of maxillae.- Interesting fact: Shrimp’s hearts are in their heads.• Sponges are another type of an invertebrate animal.
They cannot move and live on the ocean floor. They obtain food & oxygen through the flowing water.

I found this project very beneficial. I had never made a Non-linear PowerPoint until this class. I enjoyed learning new techniques on PowerPoint that can help me in the future as an educator. While researching I came across some great websites! Enchantedlearning.com is such a great website for elementary students to learn more about nature, history, just about everything! I will keep this in mind for when I am a teacher and looking for worksheets or other activities. Overall I had a great experience with this project! I love animals so I thought this would be the perfect topic for me!
