Classification of Living Things
Kingdom - largest group
There are six kingdoms:Eubacteria
ArchaebacteriaProtistFungusPlant
Animals
Teacher Feature: Classification
Monerans: Eubacteria & Archaebacteria• Both are one-celled organisms with
no separate nucleus• Eubacteria – common bacteria that
is found everywhere (strep and staph)
• Archaebacteria – found in extreme environments such as hot springs and in hydrothermal vents at the bottom of the ocean
Protist & Fungus
• Protist –most are one-celled organisms which have a nucleus and cell structures
Examples: algae and amoeba
• Fungus – many-celled, cannot move, absorb nutrients from other organisms
Examples: mushrooms, yeast, and mold
Plants & Animals
Plants: - many-celled, cannot move, get energy from the sun to make sugars
Examples: trees & flowers
Animals: - many-celled, most can move, get energy from consuming other organisms
Examples: invertebrates, fish, birds, and mammals
Scientists divide kingdoms into smaller groups. As the groups get smaller, the organisms in the group become more alike.
The species is the smallest group just as the kingdom is the largest.
