Taking the mantle from the departing seniors is a sol-id core of younger players, many of which can be found roaming the infield for the Panthers. Sophomores Jack Lubow, Colton Shaw, Jake Jen-nings and junior Seth Myles all played important roles, while freshman phenom Caleb Berg-man burst onto the scene and

contributed in both the infield and outfield for the program.

Byrd also added that soph-omore Ben Baker-Livingston has the potential to grow into a premier arm on the mound, something the head coach said is necessary in a district as deep and athletic as 9-6A.

While the potential crop of stars is a large one, Jennings and Bergman led the way in 2019, batting .364 and .390, respectively.

For Bergman, who trailed only Shaw’s 15 RBIs with 14 of his own and scored 18 runs, notched three doubles and legged out one triple, Byrd said the message is to simply bring the same effort next spring.

“It’s just being consistent,” he said. “He had such a big year this year, and I don’t ex-pect him to just have even more of a blowout year next

year. Just be consistent every year. … If he does what he did this year all four years, that’s pretty special.”

To compete in 9-6A moving forward, Byrd, who’s now been at East for three full seasons and feels that his program knows what to expect from him as a leader, said his group of returners will need to take it upon itself to improve by the time fall preparation rolls around.

“I think teaching these guys how to work out and do stuff on their own and in their downtime is important,” he said. “They’ve been with me for three years, now, so they understand how important the weight room is and how much time we spend in it.

“It’s always those summer months where they can either really get stronger or they can lose some ground.”

“As we prepare to play in the state tournament, we have very high expectations. Throughout the year, we have proven that we can play with anyone,” he said. “I believe our team has what it takes to win state, but the compe-tition will be very tough, and we will have to play well in order to win.”

To make good on that po-tential, though, Hardison knows that his athletes will have to stay in the moment.

“I think the most import-ant factors in turning in their best effort are to play their game, stay positive and play one shot at a time – [to] not dwell on the past or get ahead of yourself,” he said. “We will come up with a game plan on how to best manage the course [and learn] which holes to attack and which holes to play it safe. If we play smart, I like our chances.”

Elli Gordon led the way for Boyd, carding the only sub-80 score in the one-day event by shooting a 75. Still, no re-corded score was above an 82 for the team, as the group’s consistency vaulted them over challenges from Austin Vandegrift’s silver team (326) and Klein Oak (327).

The Lady Broncos also played well at the 9-6A tour-nament, finishing one spot be-hind first-place West and get-ting what head coach Denise Hachtel said was a two-day record for her group at 585.

Winans, now at the University of Oklahoma, swept through the 6A postseason and earned the program’s first state title, carding a two-day score of 135 to take gold as a senior.

Meagan Winans qualified for the Region II-6A event with a score of 138 at the 9-6A championship, then followed that performance up with a 1-under 71 at the shortened Region II-6A tourney to finish in third place after a playoff with West’s Liu and earn her state appearance.

Other individual qualifiers in Star Local Media’s cover-age area include Hebron’s Jennie Park and Prosper’s Halli Moore on the girls side and Flower Mound’s Andrew Zobel and West’s Matt Com-egys on the boys.

Jun Park completed the regional sweep for the Hawks, topping the individual podi-um after a two-hole playoff with Byron Nelson’s David Harrison.

McCullough is also optimis-tic about his linebacker corps, particularly sophomore Austin Weeks, and hopes that the en-tire package, while relatively green, will continue the up-ward trajectory established by defensive coordinator Blake Hughes a year ago.

“We are really, really ex-cited about our defense right now. … I think, honestly, we’re playing really good de-fense,” McCullough said. “I think we are ahead of where I thought we were going to be. I think our linebackers are play-ing excellent.”

Many of the Panthers’ larg-est absences will be on of-fense, where 2,938-yard passer Mallory and his 34 touchdowns will move on from the black and gold. His group of receiv-ers, a corps that saw three go for at least 700 yards and that

was headlined by Anderson’s 907-yard, 14-touchdown per-formance, will leave with him.

Though McCullough ex-pects an offense with multiple looks, more misdirection and motion and more action on the ground from the quarterback position, one piece will remain the same – junior back Trey Jones-Scott racked up 178 re-ceiving yards and 811 yards on the ground in 2018, and he’ll once again carry the load for the Panther offense.

“Our identity is going to be behind Trey Jones-Scott and that offensive line,” Mc-Cullough said. “We’re going to have to have ball control. We’re going to be different, and different is not always bad. Our identity is going to be running the football.”

While Mallory was the unquestioned starter under center last season, this year’s quarterback will likely be de-termined through a lengthy competition. Both Record and junior Ryan Foust saw action in Thursday’s showcase, and McCullough said a transfer student from Wyoming due to arrive this summer will also factor into the decision.

McCullough said Foust may have a slight leg up at the conclusion of spring practice, though he liked the Thursday performances of both Foust and Record, who he said will feature in the offense and in designed quarterback runs re-gardless of whether or not he’s the starter.

The Panthers, who Mc-Cullough said he felt improved each practice throughout their spring period, will open their fall campaign Aug. 29, when they’ll take on Hurst L.D. Bell at Pennington Field.
