Change

I will be speaking to You but …..

A map from 1418 support some historian's claim that the America was discovered by the CHINESE 70 years before Columbus?

It is generally believed that Christopher Columbus discovered America, that Vasco de Gama discovered India, and that Ferdinand Magellan discovered the Philippines. But when it comes to Africa, it is impossible to pinpoint exactly who made the “discovery”

DISCOVER?…do you discover what is already in existence?

Look around you; everything you see and hear is the outcome of the thoughts and ideas of people;

It is People, their thoughts, ideas and activities, that translate intent and goals into output.

… so where do ideas come from?

Africa represents:20% of global land area13% of global population2 % of global economic output1 % of global Internet users• Total GDP similar to Switzerland • Number of fixed line telephone similar to Tokyo,

Mobiles have now overtaken fixed lines• Limited airline connections between countries.

Air travel between some counties is via Europe• North-South cross-Continental flight : 11 hours• 5 time zones

Choice• Nobody makes you do anything• What you tell yourself is what causes you to do what

you do• What you tell your self is a function of how things occur

to you.• If you do not know the purpose of your role you will

abuse it• The use to which you put your talent – What success

means to you• Climbing the mountain to see or to be seen

The Challenge of Leadership

Winning Hearts and Mind

Leaders Capture Hearts and Mind

• They understand it goes beyond telling• They show they are human

– Can feel what others feel – Know what it means for others to be in a situation– Others seeing they can be vulnerable too– These demonstrate authenticity and create trust –

essential ingredients of Leadership

Leaders Capture Hearts and Mind• They make it about others not about self; Check out their purpose• They listen

– Body Language– Read what people say as well as have not said and respond to these– The average person speaks 150 to 200 words per minute but processes up to

1300 words per minute in thought• They generate options – not one way (my way) solutions• They have the courage to demonstrate conviction. They are respected, not

feared• They are present; in the moment • They make others see how valuable they are

– Show appreciation– No sense of entitlement

• They empower others• They build character muscles in relationships

“ In order to understand someone fully, you need to walk a mile in their shoes.”

What is the first thing you must do if you want to walk a mile in someone else’s shoes?

Change

• Change is about doing things differently.

• We are never going to become what we wish to be by remaining who we are; so actually we crave change

• People do not resist change; they just don’t like to be changed

• You can not change people but you can cause people to change

With a new laptop, I am:• Thrilled by possibilities of

things I can do with it.• Excited by the size of its

memory and the new programs.

• Stimulated by the idea of working on things in way that I have never tried before.

However, I’m also:• Fearful and uncertain of

how to use all the features, It can self-diagnose and apply fixes

• Anxious and worried that I won’t figure everything out before the next time I have the laptop with me in a meeting or a training session.

How Change Affects us

Changing

I must:• Give up something to get something. I gave

up the old familiar laptop. • Unlearn what I knew about the old programs.• Adjust to things that are very different. • Temporarily give up my cushion of comfort.

The Change Cycle Every end is a beginning; Every beginning is an end

• William Bridges believes it isn’t the change that is the problem; the change is a situation.

• People have difficulty with the transition, which can be described as a three-part process.

The Three Phases

The Change CycleWe are transforming and growing; One way or another

• William Bridges believes it isn’t the change that is the problem; the change is a situation.

• People have difficulty with the transition, which can be described as a three-part process.

The Three Phases

TRANSFORMING

People will change if…• They see the point• They see the benefit for

themselves and for the organization

• The benefits of the change exceed the pain of effecting the change

• They feel they have the capability as well as feel confident they can pull it off

These drive people to embrace change and invest discretionary effort to make change happen

The fundamentals• What is the change?

– People Impact Assessment– Internally– Relating with Stake holders

• Get buy-in• How will the change affect

people?– Enable them; Build Capacity

• Communicate, Communicate• Anchor change in the culture

– Probe, Articulate and demonstrate the power of the right behaviors

– Drive these in next generation

Change is a process not an Event

Reduce Negative Consequences

Accelerate Change

…beware of Communication Barriers

What is Said and What is Heard

Communication Barriers • Experience• Emotions• Background• Attitudes• Culture• Subject

knowledge• Prejudice• Mood• Wording• Education• Noise Level

• Ambiguity• Perceptions• Non-verbal

messages• Hearing

Communication Barriers

All are on a Journey… No one is a resource

There are no business issues…There are people issues

Making Change Happen…common pitfalls

Leadership is what you cause people to do

Leadership going somewhere and they are taking people with them

Change fails where Leadership failure occurs

Driving with the Rear View Mirror• The vision is not sufficiently compelling

– Create a burning platform– Deeds and words must convey it and reinforce it

• Taking progress on the journey for granted– Plan for and create short-term wins– Celebrate success

• Pace is slow; no sense of urgency– Get people uncomfortable in their comfort zone– Use fact and figures– Get external people– Enable those that have the spark and caught the bug to

spread it

… and more

• Change becomes elitist and not inclusive– Enable Bilingual facilitators to translate the

language of the past into the language of the future and other way round

• Not building Leadership at all levels• Insufficient visible support at every stage and

at every level– Ensure there is a visible powerful coalition guiding

and pointing the way

WeCreate the Future

In Language

The future is approaching but it is empty…

Words don’t transform you -How you occur to yourself does!

“They conceived a new idea of themselves. They went forward into battle transformed by his words.”

Isaiah Berlin speaking of Winston Churchill

Never, never and never again shall it be that this beautiful land will again experience the oppression of one by another. There is no passion to be found playing small - in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living. There is no easy walk to freedom anywhere, and many of us will have to pass through the valley of the shadow of death again and again before we reach the mountaintop of our desires.

“We shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end. We shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans, we shall fight with growing confidence and growing strength in the air. We shall defend our island, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the beaches, we shall fight on the landing-grounds, we shall fight in the fields and in the streets, we shall fight in the hills. We shall never surrender!"

I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men are created equal."I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at a table of brotherhood.I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a desert state, sweltering with the heat of injustice and oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.I have a dream that my four children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.

Descriptive Language

• There is nothing we can do.• They won’t allow that.• I can’t…• I must…• If only…

Regenerative Language

• Let’s look at the choices.• We can try something new.• I will…; I choose not to…..• We can…• From here on…

Mind Your Language

• Who likes to be right?• Who likes to be wrong?• Everybody wants to be right • Nobody wants to be wrong

It depends on how things occur to individuals

How many people think that there will be times they are right and others will judge them wrong?

How many people think that there will be times when others are right and they will judge those others wrong?

We will misunderstand and be misunderstoodWe will actually get things wrong and others will too

What is right and what is wrong?

John 16:13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth..

John 14:6 I am the way and the truth and the life
